So I get home from my great trip at beautiful Sauble beach at 10:30 on Sunday night. Diddle around a bit and go to bed at 11:30.
About 15 minutes after I turn the lights off I can hear my dog Marge eating downstairs, now the problem with this was that Margie was snoring on the floor right next to me. I assume that its the mouse Ive bene trying to catch for the last months so I quickly go downstairs and turn on the lights in the kitchen but I see nothing, not even any evidence that something was there. I look around for a couple minutes but I cant see anything anywhere. In the excitement Margie came downstairs to see what was going on, and when I go upstairs she lies down on the grate by the front door(easy access to air conditioning).
About 20 minutes later Im almost asleep when I start hearing the noise again. This time I decide to be more stealthy so I slowly move downstairs. If the chewing(and now occasional drinking) stops I freeze completely, not moving again until it starts up again. This happens a few times but finally I make it to the kitchen. I creep in as far as I can and still reach the light switch. Finally I quickly flip the switch and I see this:

Not quite a mouse, which unfortunately means I still have a mouse problem. After I see the Possum, the little guy just freezes so I grab the lid from Margies food container and a paint roller that was handy to box him off and I grab him by the tail, obviously going off to grab my camera. He never tried to bite me though he did bare his teeth a couple times as you can see below.

As for how he got in my house. When I can, I leave the back door open for Marge so she can go in and out of the house. I suspect he must have snuck in one time I had done that. In fact, I had noticed that Margies water was finished when I got home which I did think was odd because she rarely finishes a bowl of water and I didnt think my friend Laurie who was watching Marge while I was away would have forgotten to fill her dish.
Either way, the moral of this story is that Margie is completely useless as a guard dog. Not only was there an intruder in the house that Margie didnt react to in any way, but the intruder was about 20 feet away eating HER food and she still didnt react. Guess the poor girl was too used to Homer being the protection for the house and she cant change now that hes passed away.
Of course, who could want to hurt this little guy.
