All great guitarists, however there can be no #1 or top 10. Everyone is different, everyone has a vastly different style. Example, it's not fair to compare Steve Vai to Tony Iommi in a cutting heads situation. You would have to break it down to each technique (best sweeps, best speed picking, etc.) and then you would have to break it down to each type of metal (death, thrash, black, etc.) This would drive anyone insane, and take years to compile at which time a new, better band would come out shredding up the guitarists on half the lists, hence it's futile.

Maybe this should be top 10 most popular all time metal guitarists, that way no one can argue all the angles with you about why someone is or isn't on the list.

And hopefully Algorithm will grace this list one day ;) Keep it Metal !

A good list albeit with a few players "out-of-order." Yngwie ranked above Michael Schenker AND Randy Rhoads?! Pure blasphemy!!

I guess I'd like to know the criteria on which the list was decided. Why would Iommi, whom I love as a player, be ranked higher than Malmsteen, Rhoads and Vai. Why would Dave Murray be in the top 10 and people like Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, George Lynch, Vivian Campbell and many others I could add to the list not be on. I'd like to ask that maybe we make it top 20, then reassess the order. I LOVE all of these players but not so sure I would put them in this order.

Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, and George Lynch are all great guitarists, but they're too much like Steve Vai, and EVH.  There's no point adding them.  The list should however include Dimebag (somebody dropped the ball on that one), Zakk Wylde,  and Alex Skolnick.  Those guys are innovators in their fields.
