Free Dhondup Wangchen - sign the petition

A petition has been instigated by Reporters Without Borders that calls for the release of Tibetan filmmaker, Dhondup Wangchen, who was arrested by the Chinese authorities in March 2008 while making Leaving Fear Behind. Please sign this petition today to show your outrage that for simply making a documentary film giving Tibetan people the chance to speak openly in Tibet, over one year later Dhondup Wangchen is still being held in jail without any formal charge.

Through the first hand testimony of ordinary Tibetans, Leaving Fear Behind gives a unique glimpse into the acute frustrations held by Tibetan people after nearly 60 years of occupation. Years that have seen the deterioration and marginalisation of the Tibetan language and culture; the destruction of traditional Tibetan nomadic life through the forced resettlement policies of the Chinese authorities; the lack of religious freedom and the vilification of the Dalai Lama; and the broken promises made by the Chinese government to improve conditions in Tibet in the run up to the Olympic games.

Although only about 25 minutes long, Leaving Fear Behind is a powerful way of raising awareness about the reality of life inside Tibet today. If you would like to organise a screening in local schools, community centres or even in your home amongst friends, Tibet Society has copies available on DVD, please email terry@tibetsociety.com or call the office on 020 7272 1414.
