Last week our local publication announced the winners of their annual Poetry 99 contest. I didn't take one of the top three, but received an honorable mention like I did last year. Contestants are allowed to submit up to three poems, and once again, I was suprised at the one they choose.
Well, I've decided to let you be the judge of which you prefer by posting the one they picked and the one I liked a bit better. Here goes.

Fall dies so
beautifully....
Fall dies so beautifully
That we forget
Death makes yellow
Piles of leaves to scatter
Recklessly.
Naked black limbs
Pleading with sunset
Orange
Must wait until
Spring-
Until spring!
to begin to feel
The secret stir
Of life.
.. ..
After....
After death,
illness, sex,
A stillness settles.
Reflection floods easily
Clarity reveals simply
Questions we never asked
For fear of
answers.
Since I've been back stateside, I've been quite occupied with the mundane: finding an apartment, working, reconnecting with people, figuring out next steps. Music has not loomed as large as I'd like, but sometimes first things must come first. Like eating, or paying rent.
Thank God, the muse has not been silent, and poetry, like the two above, and unexpected visitors like an idea for a children's book have been tugging on my sleeve until I write them down. I've also written two new songs, one with a really fun strum pattern, and another with an overtly political theme. I'm grateful that ideas are still stirring even if the performance calendar is sparse.
One thing I figured out in Spain was that I really like performing, and I feel a bit down without it. So, in the coming months I'm going to get out the old booking contacts as well as check out some new ones. It'll take a couple of months to get back in the rotation, but sooner or later, I'll be coming to a venue near you. I miss First Street Cafe, Monsieur Beans, The Post Office Bar and Grill, and even good old local Cafe Coda. There's even rumor that Cafe Flo is hosting live music again. Anyway, if you've got a spot you'd like me to play, send me a note and I'll see what I can do.
