Alert the Medic to headline two Act Your Age tour stops in Cape Breton By: LAURA JEAN GRANT - The Cape Breton Post Date: May 27/09
GLACE BAY — Alert the Medic will have some brand new material to showcase during two performances in Cape Breton this week.
The Halifax-based rock band, which just recently wrapped up recording
their next album, performs Thursday at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay
and Friday at Strathspey Place in Mabou, as part of the Act Your Age
all-ages tour, which is being supported by the province of Nova Scotia,
Music Nova Scotia and the Bringing it Home Program. Fellow Halifax
band, The Stanfields, will also perform both shows.
Alert the Medic bassist Matt Campbell said both bands really thrive on
the live stage so the audience is in for some great nights of music.
“There’s a lot of energy. It’s just a lot of fun and it’s a really
upbeat atmosphere,” he said. “We just like to have fun on stage and
hopefully that kind of energy bounces off the audience and in return
they can have some fun watching the bands as well.”
Featuring Campbell, Ryan MacDonald, Dale Wilson and Troy Arseneault,
the Alert the Medic members grew up together in the small Nova Scotia
town of Stellarton and have been performing together for years. The
group’s self-titled album, released three years ago, earned them
several Music Nova Scotia and East Coast Music Award nominations,
including one in the CBC Galaxie Rising Star recording of the year
category.
Alert the Medic will be performing tunes from that CD as well as
playing new songs from their soon-to-be released album recorded
earlier this year in Toronto with producer Laurence Currie, who has
worked with many successful East Coast groups including Wintersleep and
Sloan and also produced Alert the Medic’s previous album.
Campbell said they’re eager to get their new project out there.
“It’s the first one since 2006 for us so we’re due. We’re looking at
hopefully getting a single out by August and then a CD release in
September so it’s kinda crazy and hectic trying to work all those
details out right now,” he said. “To me, where we’re at now, this is
the most complete sounding album that we’ve had to date.”
The band is also thrilled to be headed back to Cape Breton having
performed here twice last year, opening for Canadian rock legends Our
Lady Peace at the Centre 200 and playing at Cape Breton University as
part of the D250 Rollercoaster Tour.
“We played some pretty big shows there in September so we’re looking
forward to getting back,” said Campbell, noting they’re excited to be
part of an all-ages tour. “It is really refreshing to get out there and
get to play for a younger audience.”
Admission to both shows is $5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and show time is
7:30 p.m. Tickets for the shows at the Savoy Theatre and Strathspey
Place are available through the box offices at each venue.
