Exerts from a 2008-12-7 Interview...
What's up phoeNIXwa? How is the grind?
Phoenixwa: Whassup!! The grind has been hard & heavy, as of late...But it's too early feel weary. I'm keeping light on my feet, so that I can stick n move. ...haha
Who
inspires you sing?
Phoenixwa: God…and
greedy, always hungry kids. If I don’t make it…I think they’ll try to eat me!!
Like Zeus!!! That’s inspiration, right…lol
If
you were to go back and change one thing in your music career would you? If yes
what would you change?
Phoenixwa: One night at the “Red Door” things went horribly
wrong. The track wouldn’t play and I was nervous. I had to sing it to live
drums…which were off tempo. But it was something to learn from. I would never
take it back, & I never falter the same way twice.
Were
there days that you regretted singing or just wanted to give up?
Phoenixwa: Yesterday…lol.
I mean well there are times in our life that we are feeling up about things and
when we are feeling down about things. God has been great to me and I’m holding
on. Together we’ll do great things.
Did
being a singer just come to you or did you want to sing when you were little?
Phoenixwa: Umm,
I always wanted to sing. When I was a kid my sisters and I use to make up
parody song and perform… I then fell of the wagon, for a minute, but I’m back
baby!{laughter}
What
the definition of singing to you?
Phoenixwa: Umm
singing to me? It means to me as much as it does as hugging my kids… God
provided the air! I’m breathing it deeply, and exhaling it harmoniously!! Did I
answer the question!?!
If
you could, what singer would you bring back to life and create an track with?
Phoenixwa: Everybody
that knows me would probably say Bob Marley. But its Roy Orbison …j/p…No
disrespect to ....Roy....,
but would be Tu-Pac. I love the fire he had and poetry in his lyrics. (I kinda
meet Biggie already.) Truth be told I, bring back an element of one of those
artists in my songs. Sometimes it’s obvious; sometimes it only appears to be,
but the inspirations there. Just figure out what it means to you.
Are
you an American?
Phoenixwa: No. I love ....America....,
but I’m a JA native/outcast…lol. "I
may come form yard….but my backyard is of the world… " It’s a great view,
honest! Did I digress?? Music…right, it(the world) is reflected in my
music.
What
message are you trying to send out ?/ what do you hope people will get out of
your songs?
Phoenixwa: A while ago I adopted Bruce Lee’s philosophy “To be like
water”. It has given me a deeper appreciation of music & what it brings to
our lives. For me it saved a life. As for others may it inspire them to: “live
for love & not for war” ..choose life; shake that booty (hard); find
religion; give the ladies something to talk about as they tinkle…I just know
y’all do. Well, it might as well be about me!!...lol
What
inspires you to write your songs?
Phoenixwa: Love..relationships,
politics, hope, the occasional a$%hole in my life…I don’t think its different
then anybody else. I normally don’t have a problem finding material. I guess
that for me is a positive, as I am a lil off the norm. I have come to grips
w/that. My “point of view” can be..is often twisted..haha. I wish I had a
better answer…but… there was this one day, as I was sitting on the toilet. I
just flushed. True story, I looked down and there was a floater. And so I
began to wonder……..Haha…Yea there’s definetly a potty theme to this interview.
I hope that was better…haha…I’m not liable for therapy bills, am I!?!
What
do you get out of your music?
Phoenixwa: It’s
po-mans therapy to those who can’t afford a therapist, or twelve…lol It has
served me well… in addition to helping create some ...um..interesting
lyrics..poetry. Along the way it has brought me out of my introverted shell. It
has also given me a voice to champion those, whom no longer can: ….like those
of Dafur; those fallen ill to disease; or those whom are..were victims of
themselves. To me that is a high honor!
If
you were to give yourself questions what would you ask?
Phoenixwa: Ummm…
How much longer do I have to sit here until before I can go do my biz? I gotta
go, man! (Their sacred to me, ya know, my bowel movements, momentous…yea….)
