I read somewhere a while ago, something
Paul Kelly said about writing songs - that sometimes you just have to do the best you can, and sometimes you write something that you can't wait to play to everyone who comes over.
I liked that a lot because when i write songs there are the ones that take a long time and the ones that don't. Mostly its the words that are the problem. But I wrote one of the fast ones when I was up in Sydney a couple of weeks back. It's good every now and then to catch one like that - because it keeps you coming back to try again.
The first line is word for word the announcement for an arriving train at Central Station. It was finished by the time i got off the ferry to Manly.
Wait For MeThe next train to arrive on platform seventeen
Goes to Town Hall, Wynard and Circular Key
I got to catch a ferry at 9:30
She won't wait, she won't wait
She won't wait for me
Ticket in my hand I forgot the time
With my hair slicked back and my black shoes shined
She said she'd be waiting after act number three
She won't wait, she won't wait
She won't wait for me
And I let my spirit fly
I leave my body ways behind
She's not there but she's my kind
Now I'm out on the harbour gulls fly with the swell
And the lights of Manly are a string of pearls
Somewhere out there is someone for me
Won't you wait, won't you wait
Won't you wait for me?
