"The Poland-by-way-of-New York City outfit, Gwynbleidd, specialize in heavy duty metal, with lots of tricky time signatures and grunt/growl vocals, as evidenced throughout their 2009 offering, Nostalgia. Supposedly a concept album of sorts, which deals with "leaving one's homeland and relocating halfway across the world" (according to the group's growler/guitarist, Maciej Kupiszewski), Nostalgia is certainly a bombastic and far-reaching offering. Case in point, the epic, album-opening title track, which goes through quite a few twists and turns throughout its ten minute duration (including a tranquil section towards the end that replicates the sound of a male church choir). But don't write the group off as a straight-ahead extreme metal act, as they do a pretty impressive job of creating musical mood shifts, as showcased on such ditties as "Egress," "Stormcalling," and the album closing "Canvas for Departure." With almost all of the album's tracks stretching over the five-minute mark, "epic metal" is a fitting description for Gwynbleidd's Nostalgia."
