Current mood:  sad
Feelin' a little sad today, got a call from my friend Gary Signor this morning to tell me that we had lost our friend Greg Camp. I know it was hard for him to call me with the news, but he wanted me to know, we talked for a while, about Greg, and how we would miss him, and that we wanted to do some kind of musical tribute for him, I'm sure we will when the time is right. Greg Camp was a greatly talented singer, songwriter , guitarist, and we always enjoyed, hearing him and playing with him. I guess the first time I ever saw Greg play and sing, was when I was about 14 or 15, at the Missouri State Fair, went there with a friend, and there was a thing called "Kicksville", that featured Rock Bands and dancing. He was fronting a band called "White Eyes", and I thought they were great, his vocals even back then, had the ability to capture your attention. Later I heard that they were the opening act for the first show at the legendary "Cowtown Ballroom" which featured headliner "the Flying Burrito Brothers" We crossed paths a few times through the years, in KC, and other places, I remember he was with the band "RiverRock"  at a gig at Lake of the Ozarks, and then eventually with "Camp Harlow" We played several shows together. I always enjoyed him as a solo artist. The last show at Blayney's May 29, Greg was playing acoustic, on the deck, and when we took a break, Jimmy took his amp and guitar out and played a set with Greg, his voice, always perfect, never an attitude, just go to work. Greg It was an honor to know, and work with you. You will truly, be missed... dn

Larry van Loon

Hey fellers, thanks for sharing your reminiscences about a real Kansas City gem. Greg Camp, what a singer, what a gift. And what a waste. Now that he's gone, I mourn his loss with you, and for all of us. When I was doing my solo album, Greg's was a voice I just had to have with me on the project. He had a cold the day the session was booked, but who knew? His singing always soared.

I suppose we all have our demons. It's a damn shame that his kept him from reaching the heights that his talent and his deep soul could have easily gotten him to. RIP, Greg. Nothing but the best of memories.

All the best to you, all y'all Nace peoples!

Thinking about Greg, there was a time when I would see him out more than I would hear him play.
He liked people.  He liked hanging out to talk to 'em about music, about women, about whisky and how to juggle all three.  Mr. van Loon (hey Larry--how are ya?) is correct in mourning Greg's unrealized sucesses; let me offer that Greg didn't have demons, but monkeys.
Demons can be privately banished, exorcized, and shackled while still being present.
Monkeys, however are playful, disorganized, social and a whole lot stronger than they look.
Greg and his troop of spiritual simians enjoyed each other's company as much as performing for the rest of us.. they climbed over his back and around his shoulders spinning on his head with often breathtaking grace.  He was a singular ringleader. His performance has made us all smile a bigtop sized grin. Thanks, Greg; we'll share some peanuts and a shot when we meet again......

As a vocalist, Greg Camp was a major influence on developing my craft. His rich tone and the way he phrased a lyric, the purity of his voice will stick in my mind always. I had not seen Greg for years but he will always be a part of my musical memories. God bless you Greg and keep on rockin.
