Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Bon here.  We just noticed that this Friday, March 9th, is the 23rd anniversary of the first show Girl Trouble ever played.  It was a community college Battle of the Bands (not the scammy corporate pre-sale ticket BOTB but the kind where people pay one small fee at the door, get to mark a ballot and nobody goes to a "next round").  The competing bands couldn't figure us out.  Our guitar amp speakers were made out of plywood, the Ouija guitar was made in a high school shop class and my little drumset was purchased for $70 at the Sears Surplus Store.  One band called 4-Play (still love that name) had more money invested in their bizarre leather chest harness vests than we did in all of our equipment.  They brought their equipment in on custom made plexiglas handcarts. I was scared to death.  We started off with "Out of Limits" and Dale went completely out of tune.  KP came up with the idea that we should throw cans of root beer (!).  This was a bold move that I was against, but he thought that nobody would heckle us (aka beat us up) if they were enjoying a delicious beverage that we gave them.  It worked (although we never did throw cans of anything again).  The half hour we were required to play went so fast I couldn't believe it was over.  All our friends showed up and we came in second.  I was secretly relieved because the winner got to do another "victory" set and we barely had the half hour of material as it was.  We played Cramps covers, "Tell Us the Truth" by Sham 69, and "White Girl" by X.

Seems like only yesterday...

Congratulations! I wish that I could have been there, but it was another three months before I moved to Tacoma.

In your honor, I shall drink nothing but root beer this Friday! What brand would be appropriate?

Knowing Mr. KP Kendall, it was probably the cheapest brand available.  Does anybody remember Cragmont, the generic Safeway brand?  Thanks Matt!

That'll be a little bit hard to find... I'll substitute Safeway Select!

xo,
Matt

Well Matt- KP informs me that he went for the premier root beer to pass out to the crowd, Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer!  I couldn't remember.  All I remember is that most of the time KP was so broke he couldn't afford a can for himself, so I just assumed it was the cheap stuff.  He really must have been serious about getting people to like us.  Thanks though for this amazing photo of Cragmont and diet Cragmont cans!  I can still remember the after-taste!  Oh, the memories...

Congrats to the little band that could! I wish I could have been there in 1984 but I wasn't born yet. (bat, bat)

Kissy four times.  Greg

(I used to tear through that Cragmont cream soda. I got misty just seeing that shiny, beige label).

Hi...I remember that show, I was there, I actually "sang" for Variable Resistance...or as the poster listed us Variable Resistances. The best moment of the  night was watching 4-Play posing like rock gods and I recall fondly all the hairspray and eyeliner. I also thought you guys won that thing...you should have! Best of luck to all you guys...Wig Out!!

23 years later, and you guys are still consistently coming in second!  No dis intended, you ARE the soul of NW rock, and all those first place bands either o.d. or break up or both.

Congrats to all in Girl Trouble. It seems like only yesterday that I saw you in San Jose at Marsugis. Now it's 23 years later and your still tearing it up. Come to New Orleans soon. We could use you here.

Love,
Andy & Terri Average
