Subject: "RADIO NAPALM" and "The Purple Knif Show" w/Lux Interior!
In 1984, Cramps frontman Lux Interior taped a one-hour, one-off show for Los Angeles radio. Entitled "The Purple Knif Show" ("knif" being "fink" spelled backwards, a favored saying of the teenage Interior's hero, Cleveland late night horror show host Ghoulardi), the broadcast saw Lux spraying an ecclectic stew of raw, obscure rockabilly, r&b, 60's garage punk, jazz, and jungle exotica across the airwaves, ranting and raving in an echo chamber gone berserk, and washing the proceedings in his trademark humor. It's a fun hour, an a nice peak into the grooves and scratches that fueled The Cramps, their music, and their aesthetic. It makes you wish Lux had done more radio.
The fine folks at Spain's Munster Records made the show available on CD awhile back as Radio Cramps: The Purple Knif Show. Sadly, as can be seen by the Amazon link at right, the CD appears to be out-of-print and going for extortionate prices. Fear not, fellow suferers of the global credit crunch! Tomorrow night, "RADIO NAPALM" will rebroadcast "The Purple Knif Show" as part of our regular mix of punk rock from every possible era, straight from my computer and to yours'! So join us in the garage tomorrow night, with our special guest DJ, the late Lux Interior! As always, 10 PM EST, 9 PM CST, 8 PM MST, and 7 PM PST, at
