I just wrote about 700 words on why this film is so good and lost it because of my stupid browser window. In short: go see District 9, it isn't a crappy alien film.

One of the best films released this year. Everything was really fresh and unpredictable and it had a satisfying ending. Great acting, cinematography, and a cohesive, flowing narrative. Highly recommended!

Here's my review from my Twitter account @philipmitchell in what I like to call "Movies in 140"..
......District 9; a great film and good combination of documentary and storytelling. For a first feature film from Neill Blomkamp, well done. 4/5.....

..it looks pree good, good effects, looks like a good storyline, but i didnt like the part were they were talking to the alien and its face was pixilated so you couldnt see its identity, seems a lil silly. it looks alright though :)..

i have to admit, i really liked this film. there is enough gore to keep the bloody thirsty happy, and enough action to keep the nerds from pulling out their gameboys. it has a good story, whilst consistently trying to make it look real as it looks like a documentary in some aspects...i would definitely recommend this film to anyone. it is definitely not just 'another alien film'...

i really enjoyed this movie. it wasnt like other extraterristrial movies. it didnt' have that feel to it at all. it was really engaging. i connected a lot with the aliens and because of that 'connection' i was kept interested in the film. it was awesome. the graffics were so cool and their weapons were sick. definately recommended. i got tickets for this and took my boyfriend. he was so happy. he says its his new favourite movie of all time (taking over from apocalipto)

..A Mix of: Blair Witch, Alien, Meet the Feebles[Peter Jackson Classic], Black Hawk Down, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, HhamburgerHill, and Many more other clones of what could have been; but this is a Production done IN South Africa, by a SA Director, under stewardship of a Moviemaking Fan for SF fans of all ages [Note: R16].....A restaurantuers dream of coctails to be had on a platter.........The Audience is enthralled in a piecemeal moving interview told some in present, some retrospective; of a man who comes to be a FLY on the cause of taking technology because 'they' think they are better.........A movie you think you may have seen premise of before, but become so enthralled in the story you are changing allegiances throughout.........Look out for the 'son' who despite his youth is far advanced than those whom belittle him.........Halo Lovers, eat your heart out !! You may NOT have the movie, but the makers give you something more than sufficient in exchange for all the best elements are there with a hope for more to come !!........A Sleeper in media terms of marketing, A Cult movie to become for being classically original in a time of HD /SFx/ Big Names Low Tallent [ViVersa here !!]........A Movie where the trailer is NOT the best part of the movie, but an introduction of what to start to expect only to serve up far more for the appetitie.........A Jamfest and Prawnfestival all in ONE !!!........The only question I have is: Where are the Strings ????..

One of the most unexpected, genre-defying, and insidiously thought-provoking movies out. If you go in thinking it's just another alien flick you're not going to know what hit you. Not only does the role reversal of humans being the monstrous, inhumane creatures against powerless aliens take a while to come to terms with, the comparisons it draws between humans and ostensibly inhuman monsters is a brutal, if quite unsubtle, commentary on human nature.

Shallower than the deeper meanings and social commentary however, lies a visceral and gritty, and sometimes stomach-turning, narrative backed up by amazing visual effects and intense action scenes (and giant robots). The development of the main character from naive happy-go-lucky office paper pusher, to being betrayed by his own people, and siding, literally, with the "other side" is punctuated by his simple lack of comprehension of events, and his slow yet inevitable realisation of how the world works.

A good movie, in almost all respects, and while not instant blockbuster material, has the ability to keep you thinking long after you exit theaters.

I was enjoying the movie immensely for the entire first half, give or take.

I found it quite hilarious, interesting, gritty and well filmed. The foreshadowing of actual immigration issues, shrouded in a veil of comedy from a great lead character was great to watch.

Then the film turned into a big action fest. Boring and predictable with a side of cliches. Throw in some cheesy moments and lots of explosions, you have the entire last 30minutes of the film.

..Great Movie, I liked how at the start it was like a interview of looking back upon the events we were yet to see, but it didnt give anything away at the same time. The special effects were really good and i loved the aliens, they looked so real. Its the best SCI-FI ive ever seen, there's no other movie like it....:D
Its a hard choice between Sherlock Holms and Where the wild things are for the next Screaning!..

Saw it with my gf.....I LOVED it she didnt.......from what we noticed it was abit full on for some people not in a gory way but in a sick were gonna make a film about oppression and to get away with it were gonna use aliens.......I honestly thought it was one of the best moies id seen in a while solely because it was well different.. Peter Jackson did a very good job incorporating the so called prawns into our world.. so good infact that at times i didnt realise they were cgi and i swore there must have been people in alien suits as there expressions and mvements just seemed so real.....
....Id reccomend it for those who are after a sci-fi flick with abit of drama behind it... someone before me posted it was like aliens meet schindlers list i kinda agree but think it reminded me abit more of an alien version of shawshank redemption what with the aliens just wanting to excape there prison of district 9 and return home..

The movie was pretty decent, started off slow but definitely got more intriguing (except the fingernail bit - had to look away).

Didn't like having my phone taken.  Some people have to arrange for babysitters, etc, for movies - and not being able to be in touch is quite worrisome.  I almost didn't go in when they said I couldn't take my phone (despite it not even having a recording device).

Otherwise was a good time.. thanks Black Curtain :)

..District 9 is a film that defies expectations. Half tongue-in-cheek political commentary, half action-filled adventure, it’s certainly not your run of the mill aliens vs. Humans epic. It tells the story of a colony of aliens stranded in the slums of South Africa, and details a series of events that could lead to either their demise or salvation. To say more would be to spoil half the fun – the uncertainty of which direction the film will take has you on the edge of your seat right up to the closing moments – and what great moments they are!

Indeed, the whole film will have you on edge with a darkly humorous documentary style opening that has our main character constantly flirting with danger before a certain event sets the main narrative into motion, and the film changes to a more familiar action/adventure style.

The cast is brilliantly believable; every extra feels like a real person in a very real story, and the leading man has a tremendous amount of charisma hidden behind his dopey and somewhat bigoted exterior. You might not love him at first, but have you any heart at all you’ll surely be cheering for him by the end... and no, I’m not just saying that because he reminds me of Rhys Derby (Murray) of Flight Of The Conchords fame. Yes, I know there’s a difference between South African and New Zealand accents... I just don’t think it’s a very big one.

One unexpected aspect of the film was its violence. The film is by no means afraid of exploding a soldier or ten into a thousand tiny, bloody pieces – not to mention limb-removal and some particularly cringe-worthy moments involving fingernails and teeth. The strange thing is that I found myself more humoured by these moments than repulsed. By the end of the movie I couldn’t wait to see the next alien weapon, couldn’t wait to see the next soldier explode – it was just so much fun. My only gripe is that perhaps there could have been a little more variation in the weapons and technology. There were some fascinating ideas there, but it did feel as though a few were re-used maybe a little too much, and it would have been nice to see some more new ideas particularly towards the end of the film.

As I mentioned, the film becomes less abstract as it progresses – from a clever pseudo-documentary to more of a traditional hero story - but drenched in realism and with its not-so-subtle commentary on bigotry and the uglier side of human nature, District 9 is more than just this summer’s must-see popcorn blockbuster; it’s a film the science fiction genre needed. It’s something ..new.....

i saw this movie last night. it was sweet!! i really like the way Peter directed the movie so that you felt compassion and empathy for the aliens. i found that i connected with the aliens. i wanted christopher to find his son, i wanted them to make it back to the mothership, i actually found myself whispering no when the baddy raised the rocket launcher. it kept me engaged and entertained in a way that other alien movies don't because there's no connection between the audience and the aliens.!!! ..

It was fantastic. A fresh take on movie making, that's for sure. And it portrays humanity in a very realistic way. It doesn't sugar coat human beings but shows that we have potential to act like that and  due to extreme circumstances we are forced to confront our fears and doubts and to make a possibly life changing decision. It did start off slow but it picked right up. Kudos for showing this movie

Very good film. I saw it thanks to black curtain but a single viewing didn't satiate my desire for amazing cinematography and awesome storytelling. Went out ot sse it again with more friends.

I thought about it a lot and I would very much like to see "Where the wild things are" more than anything.

I really enjoyed this movie, I was really getting sick of "dumbed down" story lines in movies, 2009 has been a good year for film though, theres been 2 or 3 i have really enjoyed. I was, however very disappointed when all of my friends thought the movie was crap when we walked out.
