the science of boxing. . . and songwriting

writing a song is like boxing.

you could just SAY what's on your mind, without the poetry and rhyme. and you could just KICK someone's ass, without the boxing gloves and the boxing ring. but, when a set of rules is engaged, a qualitative standard for performance emerges. a simple act suddenly becomes more difficult to complete. a strategy is needed. "should i use brute force or finesse my way in?" either way, an art form is created.

yes van i truly appreciate this blog. songwriting is challenging . it is difficult to find creative ways of telling a story. it takes a strategy. without putting in the work, it might not be qualtive or a good song. or end up sounding like everything ele's. of course that is why i follow your work.it pushes me to work harder at being a better songwriter and be able to call what i do good. it is your work that has inspired me .

both, do like my man Muhammad Ali and use finesse and brute force, some of Van Hunt's best work hits hard and has charm all at the same time a la Out Of The Sky, Ride Ride Ride etc knock their ass out with style and finesse
