Santa

Dedicated to my little brother who just "found out" last week---
---figuratively dead at the age of 11.

"I said goodbye to Santa
far too soon"
said a little girl at the age of 3
"My eyes wide open
far too soon,
while I never really cared to see"

My mother told me
she died back when-
back in 1963
My father told me
"I'm not sure when.
It's been too long of a time for me"

My mother thinking
of my brother's friends
who refused to ever rest in peace
Told my brother,
told my brother when
all of his life would sadly cease

I knew a boy
at the age of ten
who was smiling as he believed
I remember I was almost ten
before that last breath ever came to me

I can still recall
to wave goodbye
wasn't ever really the greatest thing
I mean why you gotta make someone cry
just because you don't believe in anything?

Now someone told me love's a lie
when I died at age 23
A girl who couldn't tell me why
I thought that was the cruelest thing

My uncle died at 45
He heard that faith wasn't an entity
Makes me wonder,
makes me wonder why
did it ever have to be

And I've heard rumors
that hope's a lie
Well, I hope that information
never comes to me
If you can tell me this,
then tell me why…
it means so much to me

A little boy
at the age of ten
That child could have been you or me
Now I wish for days
of way back when
as I hope Santa comes back eventually

This poem is so true for todays world. I think just because you don't believe something, doesn't mean it isn't true, likewise, if you do believe something, that doesn't make it true.

My fave part is:
"I can still recall
to wave goodbye
wasn't ever really the greatest thing
I mean why you gotta make someone cry
just because you don't believe in anything?"

Thanks for such a great write,
Merry Christmas to you and your family once again... *Huggies*

Much love,
Gabby

i remember a collection of these moments.

discovering santa wasnt real
realizing i am alone in this world
understanding christianity wasnt the only religion
and lastly believing that i was meant to be a poet

thanks for the refresher.

Yes this is an amazing poem and brought a tear to my eye as I wondered how I ever had any hope when I was younger.... never believing in so many things because of dysfunctional unhappy adults who ruined childhood for me and many many others.

Very touching and such an important message!  Thank-you for sharing that on this night before Christmas....

Agree with Gabbi. The whole poem is great though - you had a sip of the Holy Mead. I refer to Norse mythology. Odin is the god of poetry and more than once he, and the other poets' god Bragi (yes, why not have two gods for the same thing), drink from that Holy Mead a lot. That's mythology of course, what I want to say is: you have the gift.

Apart from old songtexts (not of the kind to publish here & now) I only wrote two English poems in '89/'90. One was called 'Trees' and got lost, last line was, 'Man breaths them in and dreams of peace.' (Meaning when sleeping outdoors you breath in their scents and peaceful vibes.) Another one I published in an old MySpace blog, when I stumble on it I'll post it again, last line was: 'Wisdom that I'll dig for in my grave'. Allrigt, ta, bye Jon.

Happy Holidays everyone.

I believe the commercialism aspect of Christmas has caused a situation of competition amongst parents whom have issues perhaps in thier relationship to buy gifts not of emotional worth but of dollar value and size to out do each other.

Lost in all of this is the imagination and thoughtfulness as Christmas is for children and a time for families, friends and love ones to gather and enjoy a meal, share laughs, stories along with a drink or two.

It is unfortunate that with all that has happened and continues to happen equating to the breakdown in society at all levels that the very thing children have always looked forward is lost and the spirit of Christmas going along with it in some cases as families are not together as they once were.

Your poem was well written and I hope from it those whom hold this holiday season dear still practice the idea of Santa being alive to thier children.

peace,

I have been Santa for over 25 years now.

My kids have grown but still have my grandchildren. :)

I have been blessed to be able to go to a nursing home ot two.

Had a 100 year old woman sit on my lap and she cried,  She wondered where I had been all these years. Made me wonder the same thing.

As long as there are sleigh bells, snowflakes, and most of all faith, there always will be a Santa Claus. Once I decide to put away my red suit I will hand it down to my son.

never was told the lie
so the falsehood never need be revealed

i walk a different path
where true myth and legend live strong

a deeper greater vision holds sway

let the market for saint nicolas reign
or let the golden path sing free

a warrior path
a heart of courage
a song of truth
a song of love
a song of honor

let all brave souls give true family
give true gifts of heart and soul

let the solstice live again
breathe again
be known again

let the sacred traditions of our tribe
of our people
of our land and earth

be renewed
recalled
reborn

reforged from the ashes

let the gatherings come
a gathering of the tribes

I read this  -I laughed  -I  "aww'd"  ...and then -I cried.  This year -BOTH, my 12 year old son and my 10 year old daughter expressed that "They know" ...because some teen on my son's bus made fun of him for still believing -and my daughter figured it out while talking with some of her friends at school  -they apparently discussed that santa couldn't be real, because -if he was, they would be allowed to have a "christmas" party in school and be allowed to SAY the word -"Christmas" without losing points ...especially if he's supposed to be someone 'THAT' important!

There is a sad -twisted, relation between ignorance and the bliss of innocence.

The whole in loss that I felt while reading your poem was just overwhelming and it made my face leak.    -yeah yeah yeah.... I'm a sap-ass -but I'm a WICKED sap ass, Damnit!

Gore-ate write!!

Wicked Best Wishes to You -and Your's

You know I tell my children that Santa is real. And if anyone ever told them differently I would be very upset. But you know what else is real? JESUS! That is the true meaning of Christmas. On this Christmas Day 2006, I want everyone, while they are looking at the beautiful mess of christmas wrap on the floor and seeing the smile in the children's eyes on what 'Santa' brought them, to also give your gift to Jesus. Tell him you love him and thank him for dying for your sins! And then enjoy the gift that he will give you! God bless you all, including Santa!

Saint Nicholas exosted way back when
Offering hope to those he could
His history passed down throughout the world
His legacy passed down through the ages
People offering hope to others is cool
Through gifts of time
Or gifts of items
The Santa we know still holds that spirit
It shines in us all
It lights up this season
Your poem is awsome
It inspires so much
To you and your family
A Merry Christmas
And a bright and shining
New Year as well.

There is no end to the belief in Santa.  Santa symbolizes what lies within each of us as we grow; the spirit of giving on the most holy day of the year.  A child was born this day who gave the most precious gift of all to each of us; his life.  His life renewed hope.  If he could give us that hope, then why must there be an end in the belief of Santa?   The giver of gifts worthy of a King?

then they'd walk away like they wanted to cry

Charlie, your poem sure rings some truth, and the bells are ringing of hope too.  We're free to feel, we're free to believe, yet when our hope or freedom becomes lost, so may our dreams, or life, or heart.  My hearts been a broken, this I know, but I still have hope, and just cause somethings broken doesn't mean its gone.

I hope your warm, and alright.  Merry Christmas, and have a happy New Year!  -Artie

Very well done poem. I remember having the heart of a child, the faith that love and hope exists in a man who could travel around the world in a single night who wore a red suit and laughed all the time. I remember having that ripped from me at the age of 7 as I found that he doesn't exist and that the world is more than just cruel, but brutal as well.

I pray that children in the future can keep their innocence longer as those from our era try to realize that innocence should be protected, and I envy those who are stuck with a childlike mentality for their entire lives. They may not be "normal" but at least they will never know the pain and suffering that this life brings in the loss of innocence.
