The Pawnshop

Sell me some sad times
I'll pay with my heart-
although it was stolen
so long ago

Give me some bad times
Tear me apart
In debt, I've abandoned
all my soul

You can pawn me away,
but I still won't go

I've bought me a camera
from the corner store
as all I've forgotten
walked out the door

I've sold all my nightmares
for cigarettes,
but kept all my dreams
for all I'd owe

You can pawn me away,
but I still won't go

I've got a hole in my pocket,
so I sold my jeans
I didn't want to lose all my dough
I've got a hole in my heart,
so I sold my dreams
Now when I sleep, there's nowhere left to go

Just back to the pawnshop
where they sell me things
and I sell them things for all I'd owe

But my camera's spoken
for my memories
It says "You can pawn me away,
but I still won't go"

What a novel idea for images!

This is so well done, the flow of that poem and its message of loss and need and pain are amazing.

Loved it

wow, jon, this one is SO felt!  i have always associated pawn shops with sadness, giving up, and desperation.  your poem takes those associations AND love lost,  and combines them into a vivid poetic painting.  i especially feel the line,

"I've got a hole in my heart,
so I sold my dreams
Now when I sleep, there's nowhere left to go."

thank you for sharing.  stay in touch...

I've always thought pawn shops were sad places, when you think of people having to almost give away their possesions just to survive sometimes.  You captured the whole idea and sadness of it.

This was a beautiful piece. Very emotionally evocative. Sadness and struggle. But still life. This was wonderfully written and the flow was gorgeous.

Is this Jon aka charlie?  Dude, I never knew this was you?  My computer sucks and I just saw your picture and recognized you.  I dont thinnk it was my best poem either.  Its weird, the poems I dont like have been getting published.  My new stuff is way better I think.  Are you back in the U.S.? I had to write you in a blog comment, because you dont accept messages.  Anyway, your poetry is amazing. Lets collaborate sometime. Im working for a couple lit mags here in Colorado, you should submit some stuff. Let me know and I'll send you the addresses and info.  Nice to hear from you.

JS ~ Checking in on your work and pleased with the deepening ~ Your latest reminds me of Cavalcanti...esp. his Rime "Donna mi prega" [http://www.liberliber.it/biblioteca/c/cavalcanti/rime/html/rime_01.htm]...the wonderful return of sound echoing hic et ubique. Look forward to seeing your future developments. Should condense into something potent and beautiful ~ strange fruits tended by they poets ~MW

I love love love this poem...kinda reminds me of my ex second who I guess he was kinda dealing with depress, and other situation to survive, and again take care his daughter...but after I move to back to my parents...I never heard of him again.... Till this day, I think about him, like if he's alright...oh well, he's all in the past; but yet always think about him during this time...the present....
