A Bottle of God

Midnight's doom
has come too soon
Thinking about it here at noon,

they say believe whatever you want
Well, I do…

but I don't believe that's true

I've got a bottle of God
It's odd-
I'm still drinking
though the spirit's gone

The liquor's gone,
and everyone's
more than intoxicated
And to think you won't be drunken
doesn't mean a damn thing
when you're wrong

Our porcelain god's
continually robbed
more than what I had in me

And I've got a bottle of God
at odds
with anyone and everyone

Did you know alcohol's a poison we try to control?

Did you know religion's decision's more than a soul?

And a soul's priceless.
And prayer works.
And there's gotta be a reason for everything.

And even if there's not,
we've still got
a bottle of God
continually passed around the room

Perhaps a bottle of nothing,
but a life full of something
that's gone
much too soon

As in fair Verona's Corona,
we've hennessied our way
to the shores of Malibu

But God's still there
He's still there no matter what we do

Along with Adams and Beam,
Jesus and me
Along with Morgan and Daniels too

With Jose Cuervo's Colt 45
strewn upon the avenue

He tried to ruin the party
He tried to ruin the party,
but he just couldn't ruin the mood

So now the time's come
for a liquor run
some time before the party's done,
and some time before I die the same
Gotta have a little fun
I know it's dumb…
to pour it all down the drain

A quarter to ten
The midnight's end
isn't really that far away

I'm just waiting for the party to begin
at the party's end,
although it's gone on all day

And I wanna see
I just wanna see
where the spirits take me…
if the spirits ever may

You can come
You could always come
It's always been your choice to stay

I've got a bottle of God
It's odd
You can say what you want to say
No matter the words
No matter the words,
it's all a prayer to Him anyways

So just say what you want to say
and pray how you want to pray
It all works, so just pray to the sun

Or pray to the moon
Or pray to the noon
Or pray 'til the morning comes

All I know is this bottle of God's almost done.

If your heart stopped right now, how would you respond in those few moments as your life drained from you? Don't deceive yourself any further by saying, "That would never happen to me." Human nature tends to think that way -- that death is something that happens to other people. But every single day 150,000 people die, and no doubt each of them that are now in eternity, thought just like you -- that death "will never happen to me."
When that day comes for you, you're going to have to face God's judgment. So the most important question you can ask is, "Will I go to Heaven?" Here's a quick test. Have you ever told a lie, stolen anything, or used God's name in vain? Jesus said, "Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has committed adultery already with her in his heart." Have you looked at someone with lust? Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? If you have done those things God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer at heart. Ask God to shine a spotlight on your heart and remind you of those things that you have thought and done that He saw. Nothing is hidden from His Holy eyes. Realize that if God gives you justice, you will end up in Hell for eternity. But that's not God's will for you. Jesus Christ suffered and died on the Cross in your place, so you could go free. That's how much God loves you. We broke God's Law, but Jesus paid our fine. Then He rose from the grave and defeated death. If you repent (turn away from ALL of your sin) and trust in Him, God will forgive your sins and grant you everlasting life.
We only get one chance in this thing we call "life." Don't blow it for eternity. Obey the gospel today. Then read your Bible daily and obey what you read, God will never let you down.

PLEASE CHECK OUT gotquestions.org or godandscience.org if you have ANY questions. If you don't find your answer there PLEASE ask me.

While reading this I also thought the same thing as Travis. I don't go to church or anything anymore, yet I do remember going as a child. I went alot. And their teachings and words are still embedded in my mind. I guess thats why I still sometimes think with my past christianess mentality. Nice poem though.

Interesting. I usually delete advertisements in my poetic blog section, but this is kinda pertinent.... and you wrote it so darn nicely. However, you should've added what you thought of the poem as well within your manifesto. But oh well...... :)

There really isn't much to say because it seems as though it has all been said a thousand times. Your poetry is consistently on a whole other level. This poem is brilliant.. and what is even nicer then the presentation and perfect flow is the meaning behind it - in particular the way it can appeal to each of your readers in a different and personal way. Those are my favorite kind of poems and you are constantly writing meaningful poetry that raises the bar for all writers! This poem has just moved up to the top of my list! A fantastic read!!

All about choices. Maybe because the poem doesn't SAY that, it bothered DDJIR&O. So your right. But, he's right also, about the hopelessness that he picked up on. Yes, "interesting".

I find your poetry always leaves me thinking Jon.
It is profound and deep.
It is symbolic and lets me have thoughts and feelings that go off in the direction that I choose. Your words are ever poignant.
This poem is superb.

Thank you for sharing this poem. I think you arranged the ideas in a very fluid way...well done...I too see the shallow pool in the bottom of the bottle at times and yet other times feel it open the door to my escape from the reality of this at-times-painful realm...I do see how in reaching for the spirits, in the end is we fall from the sky when the bottle runs dry and land smack-dab on the pavement of life, usually a harder fall then if we never soared at all.
Nice to meet you.

You always amaze me Jon. But I have to admit, I was upset with Darwin's Deads prosytilizing. I find it intrusive, especially on someone else's blog. But I do admire your tolerance to it, just not sure I could do the same.
Again a wonderful poem :)

She's such a rare beauty;
a one of a kind,
when I'm lonely look through me,
see something divine,

with no ears to hear her,
what's the language o' this book?

we see Love is a mirror...
so how do we look?

We look like each other,
we see ourselves when we see the world,
two an two from one mother;
so who's the boy and who's the girl?

if you love me then love me,
but first checkest thyself,
for what love can come of me,
if thou wreckests thy health?

You'll see you inside me,
and me within you,
so undo the illusion "there's something askew,"

to love me, please love you,
and see each fear go "poof"
just be here with me now,
when your mind runs aloof.

when we die we're reborn,
so no love goes to waste,
like an everlasting gobstopper’s sweet aftertaste.

When you’re lonely and worried,
Just say, “I’ll love you”
Or else your home’s gettin’ buried,
By the child of who?

We create what we see,
Since we’re all what we think,
Gotta stop eating our shit,
When our shit starts to stink…

From infinite to innocent, to infinite again,
I’ve found the fountain of our youth within a snake eating its end.

So I’ll love you forever even If ever’s for friends…
To be reborn as one lover’s embrace still extends…

So we drink from The Bottle of Jesus.
We sip until we are drunken...
Off of the many altering ingredients...
In The Word and what we trust....
We use The Bottle to fill The Empty...
And vomit it back up, because we can't handle it...
The Bottle of God is stronger than liquor...
If alcohol makes you sick, it will make you sicker...
If rum makes you dizzy, then it will make you fall...
And down goes the bottle, Emptiness and all.

I don't agree with the message of this poem. I think that there's life then death. Prayer is a placebo made to trick a person into believing the lies of the papacy. Other then that, I do like how this is written.

But God will fill your cup back up, and say: "Keep the party going!"

The funny thing is, that most people keep the cap on their bottle of God, and continually drink from the devil's cup. Unfortunatly, his cup stays full too.

This was awesome Jon. I stumbled a bit at the beginning trying to get the feel of what you were talking about but I got into gear soon and cruised right along with you. Going back ithere were too many good parts to pick a moment from. I share the view of the guy in this piece. It doesn't matter what you pray to. it all works. The last line was funny as well. Good work m'man.

Wow. The essence of religion characterized in the pastime of the commoners--drinking. Both are widely known, and both are heavily practiced. But both have the power to intoxicate, infiltrate, isolate, and overtake the human mind; in the wrong hands, they are equally and respectively deadly.

Heavy write.

I like this poem. I wish "Darwin's Dead etc." hadn't set up his pulpit right beneath the bar; he could have made some commentary that related to the poetry. But, to each his own. I have a friend in recovery who said she used to think liquor was "God in a bottle". I think she'd relate to this poem very well.

WOW, that was powerful! I tend toward gnosticism. I think God is where we look for God. Sometimes it's in a bottle, sometimes it's in a museum, sometimes it's when we look at the sky, because after all, we are all looking at spots in the darkness and praying for a light...
