The Man with a Guitar in his Hands

Whistlin' a blues riff
In G minor, he strums
on his guitar
like no one's there.
Puts a turn on a note-
the music that comes
he's embellished
with beautiful flair.
With hat on the ground
and shades on his eyes,
he's never seen so many people around.
He's never seen-
He's only had dreams
to play his music like he's playin' it now.

Blind man on a corner
plays for some quarters
with a voice like Cocker or Cooke
Jonny Lang's in his heart
Stevie Ray's in his hands
but Jimi's in his soul if you'd look
Got his hat on the ground
in the middle of town-
It seems there's always a dollar to make
There's always somebody passin' him by
and always someone who's never caught a break

Such a pretty, little ditty
in the middle of the city
but what he never knew
was that he was just on some random corner
on a street in the middle of nowhere
on some avenue

It's just that everyone's around
and surrounds the man
with a smile on his face,
a guitar in his hands.
As- to a turn- he would pick
while playin' a lick
just like he sold his soul to Hell.
But as someone says it's just'a gimmick,
he wishes he was deaf as well.
Sometimes he wishes he wasn't
where he's got to be at---
Sometimes that's truly his only thought.
But he smiles as someone whispers back
"I think he's great whether he's blind or not".

He hears another whisper
"Most would sell their soul
to play anything the way he play.
But that's not him- he paid his toll
but that's not how he got here today.
I heard he refused to sell his soul to pay his toll,
so he gave his eyes to pay.
So now he's here with his shades on
as to the devil he'd say,
Please take my eyes
for I need my soul to play."

Blind man on a corner
playin' his heart out
with his every pulsating beat.
Gets a little more than some quarters-
the blind man on the corner's
got a million bucks at his feet.
I think if he knew he would stop,
his passion to greed
So I lamentingly thank God he's unable to see
I think if we knew we would stop
and lamentingly heed
that we should be as blind as he

But I just toss him a quarter
from my hand to the corner
as I wink at him pointlessly.
I look in his eyes
as I leave in surprise
with the blind man winking back at me.

Dedicated to all the guitarists out there who are blind to everything but their passion. Dedicated to anyone out there who lives for their passion- whatever that passion may be. May you stay focused even if you've merely got pennies at your feet. Please leave a comment if you feel so inclined. It's truly my only gold. J

I love the last stanza!!!  The whole is beautiful, but I love the last two lines.  And yes, very much like a song, but definately a poem first.  Great job!

This was a brilliant read… Gave me goose bumps at the end… firm structure, well paced and although simplistic… very effectual… Its not a piece I can really put quotations down upon due to the rather narrative style used… But my favorite stanza was the last one… hardly needless to say tho… good work my man.. Respect.

You have a distincitve poetry form. When I started to read this one I was happy to hear the same rhythm.

Did this just flow for you? I would def. want guitar players to have this poem.

I love it, love it, love it!! I come from a family of musicians so I know all about the passion of music. I love the musicians who play not because they want to, but because they have to.

I must share this with my brother.

Thanks!

This piece is one of my favorites. You write well! it truly rhymes but you put more into the images than the rhyme which is good. Musicians are a special breed. They live thru their m usic and live to play. Some make it some don't.I have a friend who can sit down and compose music at 3:00 am in one sitting, studied in Julliard and still he is not known but he plays his music every day with such passion and all who are there to listen are so lucky.

I love it! It really should be put to music. The poem has great rhythm and a great chorus line could be picked from it. Life always wants to get in the way of music (at least for me)..the "devil" always trying to buy the soul. This poem is an inspiration to me and to all who fight this battle on a daily basis. I see the passion in your pen the same as mine with my guitar. Thank you!

I really enjoyed that, Charlie - thanks.
I was kinda surprised at the end... that you had the "blind" man wink back.
But really, the poem captured art in its purest, most sincere form - the street corner musician and those that stop to appreciate his music.  An intimate "communion" between artist and fan.  It's so rare to have a true exchange between artist and fan. Sans the arenas, the sound techs, the light crew, the A&R rep, the agents, the managers, the contracts, and the millions (of bucks).

God bless you Charlie.
God bless your art.
God bless the busker.

Wonderful! Great flow....a masterpiece of lyrical poetry. The writers, the music makers and all artist know what it feels like to "play for a penny" they do it for free because it has to be. Thank you for sharing,

I don't play the guitar or any music for that matter, but I am an artst and essentialy " blind " to other things when drawing. So I can relate to the passion. Good work, don't ever stop writting.

Thanks Charlie, this poem really touched me. I have noticed that when I do gigs, I always close my eyes to block out all the distraction so to bring out the passion of music. You're truly gifted.

simply wonderful.  beautiful.  amazing.  this is one of those rare occurences where you read something, not really expecting anything out of it, and you get slammed in the face with something so real and so personal that it takes a few minutes before you can settle down and breathe again.  if i could give you a million kudos i would.  so much talent...

emptiness is full of thoughts

I was so impressed that I called my husband upstairs to read it to him.  He is a guitar player in an amazing band and we (my huband, myself, and our 3 kids) have had to do a lot of sacrafice and struggling so that he may persue this dream.  There have been SO MANY times that it would be easier if he just quite and focused more on a "regular" job and more with the family...but he, nor we (his biggest fans) would ever be happy if that happened.  His undying drive to persue his dream is one of the most beautiful things in the world and I am proud to be here right beside him through this journey...good and bad.

p.s.  check out his band if you wish

its amazing when we write for our purpose, but incredible when we are able to fill others feeling and cause them to remember or experience new due to our work.  i left a message in your inbox and this poem is where i started.  i picked it because of the guitar.  i read this, overwhelmed with a movie of my father in my head, with his guitar, his hat, his influences, his passion for life.  he died almost 2 years ago.  thank you for this time of remembering this morning.  ashley k
