Being a Lightworker
© by Jean-Claude Koven

________________________________

They come in all different shapes and sizes. Some have been here longer than four score and seven years; others are newbies, barely out of their mothers’ wombs. Like the cavalry riding to the rescue of a beleaguered fort, they arrive at our darkest hour from the faraway places they used to call home.

They have many names: Starseeds, because the distance between their home and the Earth is often measured in thousands of light years; Wanderers, because they have crossed boundaries of consciousness to get here; and simply Planetary Servers. Yet the most widely used term for these exquisite beings is Lightworker, signifying their task of helping humankind to lift itself out of the darkness of its own making.

Whatever they choose to call themselves is of little importance. What they do here is vital. These are the beautiful souls, the highly evolved beings, who have lovingly taken human form to be of service as this planet transitions into the next octave of creation. They have come from other dimensions and from distant places in this and other galaxies to work, play, and live among us as fellow humans.

Lightworkers are located all over the planet and number in the tens of millions. Yet most of them remain unaware of who they actually are or why they’re here - so thorough is the memory-blocking effect of the Veil of Forgetting, the energetic filter one must pass through to take human form. Many of them are living dual lives - partly in the mainstream of society, partly on its fringes. They frequent new age expos; they attend and often lead workshops; they meditate, pray for peace and forward emails with poignant messages of love, gratitude, forgiveness, and hope. Above all, they have a gnawing feeling that they’ve come to serve, that something major is happening and they have some part to play in it.

They may even wonder each day if they are one of the Lightworkers and, if so, what a Lightworker is supposed to do. The handiest answer is a new twist on a popular new age commandment: "think cosmically, act locally." Mother Teresa may have said it best. When she was asked, upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, what we can do to promote world peace, her response was clear and unequivocal: "Go home and love your family."

What extraordinary wisdom, a perfect acknowledgment of the holographic oneness of creation - "as above, so below." Whatever takes place in one portion of the creation reverberates throughout its whole. Psychologists confirm that children mimic the actions of their parents and others in their immediate surroundings. Those enveloped by love ultimately return it a thousandfold to those they encounter throughout their lives. People touched by that love pass it on to others, causing this energy of light to ripple out to all humankind and from there to our solar system and the galaxy, eventually reflecting back to the All That Is.

Being a Lightworker is not about carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders - there are too many instances of well-intentioned beings stumbling badly while trying to affect great global changes because they haven’t yet put their own lives in order. Rather, it’s about making a difference on the small scale, where one has some direct influence. As Benjamin Franklin so aptly put it, "Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves."

Defining Lightwork is easy - In energetic terms, every interaction has three possible outcomes: (1) you can bring positive, supportive, affirming energy and leave the situation more buoyant and lighter, opening the door to infinite possibilities; (2) you can emit negative, argumentative, judgmental energy and leave the situation heavier and darker, thereby closing off creative options; or (3) you can be totally neutral, like a hidden video camera, and have absolutely no effect on the situation whatsoever.

Here is a simple exercise that will not only change your life, it will trigger a cascading effect that begins transforming all those you encounter and, through them, help shift the consciousness of humanity. Whether you are interacting with others or with yourself, be keenly aware of the flow of energy. Is the net effect of the interaction positive, negative, or neutral?

Let’s say you are waiting in a supermarket checkout line behind an overweight lady with two chubby children in tow. She’s slowly unloading a grocery cart overflowing with starchy desserts, cases of cola and beer, ice cream, chips, and a host of other foods that would make any naturopath grimace in pain. What are your thoughts as you watch her?

Just as her final item is scanned and she is getting ready to pay, she suddenly remembers her coupons - which happen to be dispersed randomly throughout her voluminous handbag. She presents them to the clerk one by one, hoping they match some of her items. Minutes pass like molasses. What thoughts are now running though your mind? What if you actually voiced those thoughts as they arose? What effect might they have on the woman and everyone else in this scene?

THOUGHTS HAVE POWER - Now consider the fact that a thought has almost as much power as a spoken word. Though they are rarely perceived consciously, thoughts are received subconsciously, bombarding the recipient’s psyche with their energy. These energies not only directly affect everyone within range but, through them, ultimately impact the entire universe. Knowing you have the free will to choose: will you send out positive, negative, or neutral thoughts?

If the lady in the checkout line evoked judgmental, unkind thoughts from you, consider how she probably prompts similar thoughts from others on a regular basis - how over her lifetime she has triggered perhaps thousands of such thoughts from family members, acquaintances, and strangers. She may unwittingly be leaving a trail of poisonous negative energies in her wake that ripple into the lives of everyone she touches - an anonymous Typhoid Mary adding a tiny increment to the many degrees of separation that keep us from loving one another. Now that you are aware of this mechanism, and if you were a Lightworker, what might you do with your own thoughts to help shift the old pattern?

Every moment of your life is simply another version of the supermarket checkout aisle scene. As a human being, you are inherently empowered to determine the energies of your thoughts: positive, negative, or neutral. As a Lightworker, you fully appreciate the consequences of each decision and the effect it will have on this planet. What will you choose?

What will you choose?

Well, my choice is clear. I just imagine him/her being a manifestation of God in that specific scene of my life. How a potential buddha should be dealt? By the way, that is a great meditation which I advise everybody to do. No matter of the situation, just consider everybody or every thing in your life, objective or subjective as a manifestation of God.
You will surely figure out that you are a lightworker or not.

Love,

Fara

What a great reminder for us to watch our thoughts. On the other hand, let's protect ourselves from other people's negative output with a circle of protection at all times. That's important to remember.

definitely one of my favs from you! =)
a great thing to do when you feel the negativity or judement.... feel and think "light & love" purely, and in that situation or person's direction that really needs it. same goes for media. if you see a child dead in iraq in a picture or something on the news.... you must think positive thoughts, and send love and light. loving and bettering yourself is the best thing to do to help any problem you see. anywayz, stay positive! ;)
always grateful,
with all my light & love,
namaste.

What about the person who's negative energy just makes you cringe at the sound of their voice and makes you feel nauseated? How can one protect themselves from energy vampires and that sort of people?
Of coarse I want to be a lightworker... but what about that one person?

================================
How To Stop Absorbing The Energy of Others
by Judith Orloff MD
================================

How do you constructively deal with intuitive empathy? What practical methods can you employ to avoid becoming overamped or depleted? I'm going to present some strategies I use. Try them. See which appeal. One is not more preferable than another. Most important is if your choice works.

Walk away. Let's say you're chatting with a man you've just met at a conference and your energy starts bottoming out. Here's how to tell if you're being zapped: Don't hesitate to politely excuse yourself; move at least twenty feet from him (outside the range of his energy field). If you receive immediate relief, there's your answer. Most people are oblivious to how their energy impacts others. Even energy vampires--people who feed off your energy to compensate for a lack of their own--aren't generally intending to sap you yet still they do. Obnoxious or meek, vampires come in all forms. Watch out for them. For years, reluctant to hurt anyone's feelings, I needlessly endured these types of situations and suffered. How many of us are so loathe to appear rude that a raving maniac can be right in our face, and still we don't budge for fear of offending? Whenever possible--if your well-being feels at risk with an individual or group--give yourself permission to make a tactful and swift exit. In a spot, physically removing yourself is a sure quick solution.

Shield yourself. A handy form of protection many people use, including healers with trying patients, involves visualizing an envelope of white light (or any color you feel imparts power) around your entire body. Think of it as a shield that blocks out negativity or physical discomfort but allows what's positive to filter in. For instance, your sister is on the rampage. She's about to blow up; you don't want her anger to shatter you. Now--take a deep breath, center yourself, engage your shield. Literally picture it forming a fail-safe barrier around you which deactivates anger. It simply can't get to you. Shielding is a deliberately defensive technique aimed at guarding your feelings, not repressing them. It works by establishing a perimeter of protection around you that functionally doesn't permit harm in.

Practice vulnerability. One tenet of my spiritual practice is to remain as vulnerable as I can to everything; not to shield, the antithesis of defense. Some people prefer my strategy, some don't. Use it if it succeeds for you. Here's the premise behind this: if we solidify our bond to our inner self, we'll become centered enough not to need to defend at all. Thus, the best protection turns out to be no protection--a stance that initially alarmed me. It didn't seem possible I could do hands-on energy work with someone who had cancer or depression, for example, without absorbing their symptoms myself. But it was. What could be more liberating than to find I could hold my own and still remain open! Too often we're taught to equate vulnerability with weakness. Not so. I like being vulnerable and also strong. This disarms people. To me, the appeal of such an approach is that it's a non-fear-based way of living in the world. It requires that, increasingly, you harmonize with whatever you confront, let it flow through you, then recenter again, stabilized by your own resilience. Pace yourself. A vulnerable posture will feel safer the stronger you get. It is a choice and a life-long practice.

We can be more sensitive to some people's energy than others for two main reasons. One, that we feel a rapport with them so we're more open to picking up their vibes during stressful times. Two, we tend to be sapped by issues we haven't worked out in ourselves. For instance, if you have unresolved anxiety and a coworker is anxious, you're more likely to be thrown off by it. So do you best to work on your emotional issues so you're not so vulnerable to others who are going through similar things. I'm in psychotherapy for just that reason. I need to keep my energy high so I must deal with my own emotional issues so I'm not drained by others.

Meditate. To cement your inner bond and hold your center in any situation, I recommend a daily practice of meditation where you focus on the spirit within. Doing so gets you into the habit of connecting with yourself. Start with a few minutes, then gradually increase the duration. The technique is simple: follow your breath and explore the silence. It is not void or empty; that's the mystery. As thoughts come, and they will, continue to refocus on your breath. Every inhalation. Every exhalation. The spaces between thoughts are where your spirit waits to be discovered. There is something real in there worth finding. My spirit feels like a core of head-to-toe warmth vertically aligned though the center of my body. Imbued in the warmth itself is an intelligence and intuitive responsiveness to my rhythms and questions. It speaks only truth, which resonates like a chiming in every cell. Silently become acquainted with your spirit. You can return to it to reinforce who you really are--not just the self you present to the world, but that part of you that is timeless. Make room to pursue it.
