Lazy Summer Days Lazy summer days endless summer days
rainbows firecrackers and fishing lines
pulled taunt by dawdling meandering
river currents
school-less days munching stolen apples
nibbling plump strawberries spiting
watermelon seeds for distance flicking
the amber heads off dandelions
barbecue days chicken sizzling over
white coals dripping ice cream cramming
into the family car for faraway distant
dreamland destinations
day after day endless sizzling sultry
evenings checkers on the front porch sleep-outs
sleepovers and sleepless stormy nights melting
by day and shivering by night . . .
never ending always annoying twilight
sounds crickets chirping in the darkness
mosquitoes buzzing sucking blood
and always dreaming
always dreaming of those
left behind school chums pretty
girls those one day you'll
want to hug to kiss
and the sweet smell of cut grass rain
drops sizzling on the black tar choking
from its toxic stench remembering
those lazy summer days.
