The Art of Being Real
(Is Hip Hop all of that?)
What is real, is it facts, is it a state of mind, is it going out of ones way to acheive goals? What is reality! Maybe it's a culmination of all the perceived truths about a person or a style of music, weather they are possitive or negative. Such is the state of Hip-Hop today. Thirty years after it's humble and original beginings the elemnts of rap have come back to haunt those who belive in "Real Hip-Hop". As Hip Hop music spread through out the world, the many influences that we're the pre-cursors or the grandfathers of Soul, R&B, Funk, World Music, Jazz, Rock, Roots, Salsa or Tropical (Tito Puente played on the intro to Sugarhill Gangs classic!) are now taking from rappers. RnB, dancehall, regeton, and other styles have now taken Rap as an element, and all "elements of Hip Hop culture" enbody todays commercially viable "hits".

Today people have somwhat, heated discussions on what Hip-Hop is! Is Hip Hop all of that? Lets Clarify, is Hip Hop also RNB, DNB, Electro, Gangsta, or is there still "Pure Hip Hop"? If you have heard lots of early rap, such as Grandmaster Melle Melle, Curtis Blow, and others on labels such as Sugarhill Records, Tommy Boy Records, Profile Records and the entire spectrum of late seventies and eighties Hip Hop/Rap you can relate. There we're mostly songs performed by with in-studio bands in the early days: then drum-machines became extremely popular, theni n the mid to late eighties samplers became the "weapon" of choice. Mantronix was rockin' them samples in nineteen eighty four and before sampling - cuts and stabs on turntables, and  turntabele loops or  repeats  we're doing the gig.

Now days, sampling is forbidden by the commercial industry; although, would albums like "Licence to Ill" by the Beastie Boys exist? - No! Not without the times when sampling almost did away with the most imortant element of this music - the disc Jockey, the D.J. now "the deejay" (LOL).Then I say it's ovious that Hip hop has matured and improved yet at times temporarily lost some of it's fundamental and most important guides or sources, beleifs and elements. To be replaced by or blended with things that seem trendy or detrimental to the early, and later the uncompromising conciousness of "positive Hip-Hop". Then again, we as artists, fans and contributors to this culture feel a responsibility to try and retain those original concepts, yet have a need to fit into this new and ever changing society of Hip Hop to try and re-gain or help maintain "the integrity".

Children are born with out a state of mind or concious beleifs then mostly through experience and education they form complex networks and "ideological satelites". Some orbit around in the popular culture others are passed down by a big brother or family member. And some will be by found in this Hip Hop music that sometimes poisons or tests or inspires and enriches their ideas and values with "the whole experience of Hip Hop"

To be continued homies............
