HOW I GOT INVOLVED WITH JDRF:
I was recently informed that my 9 year old cousin, Nicholas, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on April 20, 2009. He now checks his sugar at least 5 times a day by pricking his finger and he gets insulin shots twice a day, once in the morning before breakfast and then again in the evening before dinner. It's all very tough on him, but his brothers are helping him by paying attention to what he is eating...as well as what he shouldn't be eating.
Nicholas realizes that there is a real strong chance that he will have Diabetes for the rest of his life (if no cure is found). It is heart breaking when he cries about having to check his sugar or when he has to take his shots and when he is told he cant eat certain favorite foods. BUT, his family tries to make him feel better by informing him that maybe one day they'll find a cure. And that is where all of you come in.
I joined Nicholas, his family and his friends this past Sunday, 10/25/2009 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens (home of the New York Mets new stadium, Citi Field and home to Tennis’ US Open) for a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 5K walk to help raise money and awareness for the JDRF.
