I've sold my track to a big telephone company . It's almost payed back all the money i owed to big firm of the industry (and also a bit of it i can use to buy new fancy shoes, teddy bear or ketamine). Does this mean i'm a selfish cunt ? that i love cell phones ? that utopia has something to do with three dimentional animated bubbles flying in some adverts?...All type of reactions is welcome.

Sounds like you are having a bit of a self-induced guilt-trip and the resultant rationalizing backlash at your own judgement of yourself. Yes, you are a selfish cunt, but so is almost everybody else. Does that make it ok ? Only you can decide that. You are the master of your universe, Jackson.

hey, the ad is good design isn't it? You're making money to (live) create more music, getting new recognition and being associated with a good bit of visual creativity (ok, ok, an advert but so what?)

Ultimately, your integrity will show in YOUR product: music. I'd say you are pretty safe.......

Seen you live twice now, been listening to Smash for months and still loving it. Don't sleep, breathe, shop, eat ---- write more! (please :))

It's the best ad on tv and contains the best music - you should be proud of your achievement.

You deserve those fancy new shoes.

Nice one Francois. And Jackson, man, chill, this has just switched a whole load of people onto your music. It's not like O2 are really unethical or anything. If they were all neo-nazis then I might think of not buying your next album, but they're just a bunch of cunts. Big difference.

I was surprised when I heard it but only felt cynical about the company, and not at all about you. They're just looking for some of your originality and credinility to rub off on them, so the kids think they're hip too. They're not, but you are. You're no sellout. You gots to eat. And I'm very happy to hear you'll have fancy shoes and hot dinners while working on more great music.

In releation to the comment about Top Gear... I have heard so much quality music on that show. It normally only plays for about 4 seconds before switching to another track or some witty comment by Clarkson, but whoever produces the audio on that show deserves an ice cream. With a flake.

I think in principle, selling your music to the big corporate players is totally not cool. HOWEVER, I can understand why you did it, poverty is always round the corner and why shouldn't you enjoy the spoils of your hard labour?

It's seem that jiggy-tech electronic music is ubiquitous in automobile and mobile phone advertsing, but outside of that nobody really seems to want to know about it in the UK right now, it's very unfashionable music!

We would have done it too! Any self respecting musician wants to make a living from his work, and to have such a fantastic piece of music representing such a huge technological company is a marriage in the making. O2 have always used forward thinking electronic music for it's advertising campaigns, and I believe that it is the music which sells the product!

Don't worry, enjoy the money which you have been paid! Think of all those hours in front of your machines!

Lots of Love,

I heard the advert before I found out about your existance. It was one of thoose situations where I really wanted to find out what that music. Thankfully, I was already a fan of alot of artists and records on Warp, so a quick visit to their myspace warrented the information I was looking for.

I shall shortly be purchasing 'Smash', so I would say your decision was a good one. And the advert itself is one of the more entertaining ones out there.

it's heroic.  share and make back what you need to continue...thats the south american rebel way...take from people and use it for yourself, then make more great music and share that, and the heroes journey continues.  and anybody who says different is a dumb cunt...we're chuffed to bits that you sold that track...some ad music exec knows his shit...besides...Stanley Kubrick loved ad's...ad's are cool...ps.why did you owe them money...big K bill?

I totally respect you for writing this post. It is a complicated matter. That whole market with major companies buying cool sounds of the street to sell their useless products to the youth and creating a consuming hysteria... it's not good. You on the other hand are doing good shit and this deal can keep you going!

So I guess you're maintaining and being a part of bad system, but hey - nobody's perfect. And I would most likely have done the same...

Franchement tu l'as échappé belle... ;)

hey man, you gotta pay the bills.  making music is how you live right?  success comes in many ways.  having someone want to buy your music is pretty succesful.  as long as you don't let people control the music you make, what does it matter.  at least you're not making jingles for dog food.

it's not quiet good to participate to this all advertising world.

but i'm not sure that it's better than being well thinking & nothing else.

but to be totally honest , i think i would accept selling a track for an advertising.

only to have enought money to make music all day...

First I despaired - I thought it would kill my love for the song, but my love has weathered the commercial sodomy. Smash still "sounds like 4 records being played at once" (according to a friend and representative of mainstream music listeners everywhere) and happily will not be the next Play (by Moby, i mean).
(Saw you live at The Social last year, by the way ... it was super duper. Thank you for the music. Keep up the parked-car-and-poster-humping.)

Not at all, this kind of music seems to be getting more and more popular which at present is good - it's still underground enough to evolve on its own, but popular enough to be supported. Working in music is still a job, and jobs are really only used to make money. If it's payed back money and more, great!
