Current mood: sad
I lost a dear friend yesterday. There were nearly 60 years between us, but we had a bond like none other. She was Josephine. My neighbor lady for life. She was an amazing woman with a true heart of gold. She hasn't been feeling well in the past couple of years, but she never let that stop her. I last spoke to her about a month ago and she said to me, "I didn't want to tell you this, but I haven't been doing so well lately." I told her she was crazy.
She and I could sit on her porch for hours and chat about "old times". She sure did have a lot to tell. I even remember being 5 years old and learning to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano by ear. I was so excited to show Josie. She sat and watched me with everything she had as though I were some sort of musical savant.
Her house was filled with relics of a life well lived and loved. A majority of her collecting was Broadway Playbills and souvenirs. Her brother, Tom Eyen, was the writer of Dreamgirls (the book and the lyrics), so she was blessed with many VIP trips to red carpet theater events. Pictures of her with shoulder to toe furs, leisurely strolling between the velvet ropes. *sigh* What times those must have been.
I guess her death doesn't come as a shock, but I was really hoping she would make it long enough to see Tom's play hit the big screen. Dreamgirls opens in December. I couldn't be more thrilled. Sadly, Tom passed away in 1991 at the young age of 50. I pray that the two of them get plenty of butter on their popcorn when it's time to see the show.
Dreamgirls has been performed 1,521 times, has brought in 13 Tony Nominations and won the Tony 6 times!
*For the record....Jill Scott should have played Effie....I'm just sayin'.
I'll miss you dearly, Josie. I love you.
