The last three books I read were:

Wait for Spring Bandini _ John Fante

Burning in Water Drowning in Flames_ Charles Bukowski (excellent and theres a copy of it free online!)

Invisible Monsters_Chuck Palahnuik

All great and very different.  Read.  Read them all now.  Then tell me I am in fact litterate, despite what those white coats say.

really good question?  if you follow any other writing on hip-hop then it doesn't really tell you anything you don't know already...there are a couple of good chapters on post-modernism that are worth it but overall their writing style and the context in which they take it in (two smug white boys trying to sound erudite) to me was a little.....how you say....annoying.

buuuuut if you i guess aren't too familiar with rap/hip-hop then i say its worth a shot as it is short (only 130 pages) and you can see why David Foster Wallace writing style has a lot of biters.

"two smug white boys trying to sound erudite" - that was my impression, which is why i put off reading it for so long. i bought it way back when it came out because it was one of the only books around at the time that attempted any serious critical analysis of hippity-hoppity. think it goes on the "sell" pile. thanks!

right now, besides the jan reid book listed above (which i've just started, so i can't rate it yet,) i'm slogging my way through "The Cultural Collaborative: January 2005 - A Plan For San Antonio's Creative Economy," and i can't say it's recommended reading. strictly for werk.

although it would be cool if the city adopted some of these proposals...

Just got done with Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie-- love his writing style!

Now I'm reading Franny & Zooey by J.D. Salinger-- like his writing style too even though it is completely different than the previous-- obviously.  :)

Both are worth checking out~

Alexie has a great short story entitled, "Because My Father Always Said He was the Only Indian to See Jimi Hendrix Play the Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock."  It's great and worth checking out.

Unfortunately for me, I'm in law school and I don't have time for leisure reading anymore.
