JOHN MAJHOR'S WEB LOG And it tastes good, too!

Tuesday, January 23, 2007
Dear Friends:

John passed away this morning at 7:05, local time.  He was surrounded by his family.  His passing was peaceful.

Per his wishes, John's remains will be cremated and a small service held, attended by family.  His ashes will be scattered in South Dakota, near the home in which he grew up, most likely in the spring.

Please continue to post your remembrances of John here on his MySpace page.  It has been wonderful seeing everyone meet here and renew past friendships.  You know John is loving it.  His family reads your messages, and they have been a tremendous source of comfort, affirmation and humor these past weeks.

There are plans for a memorial in the coming months.  We will keep you posted here.

For those of you who have asked, Majhor.com should be up and running again soon.  Keep checking.

***

Walter John Majhor was born on November 28th, 1953.  He was 53 years old.

Dreamer, romantic, curmudgeon, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and big bad boss jock.

Laugh all you want, John.  We knuckleheads left behind will miss you.  You've no one to blame but yourself.

John,

I know you can hear me.

We had some great times. It was hard not to have a great time when you were in the company of John. He always had a positive attitude and avoided saying anything bad about others, GOD. Listen. You know you got a straight-up guy here. He was the kind of guy who just couldn't throw something on the air and call it radio. It was double-checked and done right before it came out of the chute. A true Pro.

Why guys like John are taken so young, is a mystery to me. He was so pysched up to go back and be close to family - then the news.

I hope, when my time comes, and if I am as lucky as John, to make it the best Real Estate in the hereafter then, if I can't room with him, I will at least be able to have him as a neighbor.

I thoughts are with you on this journey out, John.

ALWAYS IN MY PRAYERS AND YOU HOLD A VERY SPECIAL PLACE MY BOOK OF LIFE.

LOVE YOU BROTHER.

Morgen in the Morning

It was November of 2003 that I received a call from John Majhor asking if I would be interested in hosting mornings on a new station in Charleston, SC...The Bridge at 1055. We butted heads on more than one occasion, but in hind sight, I know that he expected nothing but the best from me and the rest of the jocks there. I can still hear him yelling..."Mor-GEN!!!!" I used to shutter at the sound. Now I'd give anything just hear him yell at me one last time... I was fortunate to work with him, but he never let any of us know about how big of a star he was. Just goes to show you never really know somebody, huh? My favorite story is about him calling my boss when I was trying for a PD position and John told him he'd be crazy to promote me. He called me a month later to offer an ear when I didn't get the promotion...what an ASS! But that was John...he'd kick you when you were down, and laugh while he helped you up. When I posted that I was leaving The Bridge a couple months ago he sent me a simple message..."So now you know. When you gotta go...you gotta go."

For those of us in radio...we all have an intrinsic connection. At his going away party he gave US gifts, one of which was a journal. Inside the cover he wrote "Keep the dream alive...JM". May we never forget the passion and may we always be inspired to be more than what the corporate shirts expect from us. If I could play any song for John right now...it would have to be The Kinks "Around the Dial."

THE KINKS..."AROUND THE DIAL"

FROM GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

Radios of the world are tuning in tonight,
Are you on the dial, are you tuned in right?
One of our D.J.'s is missing.
Are you listening?
Are you listening to me?
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me clearly?
Around the dial.

I've been around the dial so many times,
But you're not there.
Somebody tells me that you've been taken off the air.
Well, you were my favorite D.J.,
Since I can't remember when.
You always played the best records,
You never followed any trend.
F.M., A.M. where are you?
You gotta be out there somewhere on the dial.
On the dial.

(Are you ready) We're going 'round the dial,
(Are you listening) Around the dial,
(Are you tuned in) Around the dial,
(Are you searchin') Around the dial.
F.M., A.M. where are you?
You gotta be out there somewhere on the dial.
On the dial.

Where did you go Mr. D.J.?
Did they take you off the air?
Was it something that you said to the corporation guys upstairs?
It wasn't the pressure,
You never sounded down.
It couldn't be the ratings,
You had the best in town.
Somehow I'm gonna find ya, track you down.
Gonna keep on searchin',
Around and around and 'round and 'round...

(They're searchin') Around the dial,
(They're listenin') Around the dial,
(Poor station) The best in town,
(Poor D.J.) Who never let us down.
While the critics kept on knocking you,
You just kept on rocking around the dial.
Around the dial.

I've been searchin' for you on my radio.
This time your station really must have gone underground
Somebody said you had a minor nervous breakdown.
Was it something that you heard,
Or something that you saw,
That made you lose your mind,
Did you lose control.
Did you step out of line?
If you're there, give us a sign.

I can't believe that you've been taken off the air.
Think I'll sell my radio now that you're not there.
You never gave in to fashion,
You never followed any trends,
All the record bums tried to hack you up,
But you were honest to the end.
Gonna keep my radio on,
'Till I know just what went wrong.
The answers out there somewhere on the dial.
On the dial.

Can you hear me (around the dial)
Are you listenin' (around the dial)
Are you out there (around the dial)
Can you hear me?
Around the dial.

Peace be with you John...until we meet again.

I'm John's sister

..It's been a very strange, sad, funny, altogether heart breaking day here.

I want to let everyone know that your messages about your experiences with John have really been a source of comfort to the family. Each story has reaffirmed for us what we already believed...that John was a very special human being, a fantastic big brother, a loving son and the best radio voice to ever grace the airwaves.

Please keep posting your comments and messages. Each and every one is precious to us.

Thank you,

Virginia

I posted my memories under the blog entry from the 17th, but I just wanted to add that I did a little searching and found I still have some Toronto Rocks episodes on tape. I have no idea if the tape will still play, but I hope it will. I have not fallen asleep listening to John's voice for 30 odd years, but tonight I will try in memory of him.

You're still my best friend Johnny. Wherever you are. And now you have all the knowledge in the universe at your command. A dangerous thing!! Enjoy your next journey or as they said in "Spinal Tap,"  "...we hope you like our new di-rection!" Stop by in our dreams from time to time. I'm crying, and I don't know why. You're free, and we're still here. I will love you forever, buddy. I've dedicated my next "Reggae TV" show to you. I'll send you a copy by heavenly express!! I wore the CITY-TV/TORONTO baseball shirt you gave me. You'll see. I will love you forever, bro.

PS: To everyone reading this...here's something strange. Just as I typed the last word of this message, my office phone rang. It was line three, which never rings as it's a roll-over line. I picked it up and no one was there.

OoooOOOOOHHHH!!!!!!! Spooky!!!!!   But we know who it was.

Rest in Peace John.

You are and will always be a big part in my past. I grew up watching you on Toronto Rocks and listening to you on CHUM and later on CITYTV. The hearing of your passing just flored me but life as they say goes on and thanks to you touching my life the way you did, it will be that much better. We never met but God willing I will get a chance to meet you when it's my turn to go.

God bless

Jose

I grew up with John on Chum and Toronto Rocks. The next time I heard about him was through my uncle Andy. I had only one opportunity to meet John at a BBQ at Andy's. Always thinking of you.... XO

John was a huge part of starting the video age here in Toronto. His wit & humor were never duplicated after his departure from radio/TV in this area. John will never be forgotten & will be sorely missed by me &  many others that his life/talent affected. My prayers go out to the family.

Thanks for everything John..I'll miss ya!

I was recently looking through some old 1050 Chum music charts and browsing the web when I came across the news that John had died. I never even knew he was ill.

I grew up in Toronto, listening to Chum back in the 80's. All the music, the bands, the radio guys - wow, it seems so long ago. And John was an integral part of the Toronto radio scene. A BIG part. I too, remember coming home after school and turning on Chum and listening for hours. I just can't believe this.

I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to his family. I know John has many fans, he WILL NOT be forgotten. Thanks Maj, we all miss you.
