My Lovely Independence

I am the mouse weary of the fat cat
and the child eating cookies
in the closet. I tip-toe
on your word's current,
as your sap hardens to bark.

I agree and forgive-agree and forgive.
You love this pattern.
You are the comforter
who nurtures your consequences,
some days all I am is your consequence.

I tried to remember who I was before…

anger surpasses wonder

when you start snoring.

You are stilled of insomnia
and habituation, as my cup runneth over.

After you, purdah lies
on the front welcome mat.
I've scorched all your belongings,
even the smell of ash tray on my favorite
thrift store shirts. Burnt it.

I dedicate these flames to you man-
my lovely independence.

His Quaint Entertainment

A brown corral with a fence surrounding it.

I will ride the horse to provide him purpose.

To provide me charity and justice

by my own hand. Blackberry eyes

casually observe me in my cage,

and I imagine him saying,

'Every man for himself,' but he grunts,

comes to the edge,

and defines me by my eyes.

The sun has been shining

all morning without a blink or wince,

and the horse responds a gleaming back.

Skin slides over muscle as the carousel begins.

All the work being done

is between my thighs,

while the wind gently confronts

my face. The flies leave him be,

they do every time he gallops.

Wind reels 'round my head

and howls past my ears,

streaming and separating my hair.

Grass bows and the dirt road lumps

and scoops like small craters, like cellulite.

But the stall starts to whine it's rusty hinges

and anxious flapping doors

boding restlessly. Black balloons

gaze. He trots back with neutrality to the barn…

until his next quaint entertainment.
