"Imposture"
Mixing personal frustration and an evocation of Benjamin Markovits’ novel Imposture gave birth to this straightforward song by Gabriel about unreciprocated love and cheating… Some people found similarities with Pavement, The Wedding Present, Smashing Pumpkins’ Today, or even Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks theme. Gabriel denies those, and acknowledges being more inspired by Blur’s Tender. Gabriel and Isabelle share the lead vocals, a first for
balbec. Stephane came up with a (not quite!) hip-hop drum pattern, and many basic tom fills with some reverse fills. It was one of the easiest and funniest song to record. Our sound engineer nicknamed it “the song of the drunken Hawaiian”, because of its mid-tempo unsteady solo in the middle part. Even weirder, Vincent’s bass line in the verses reminded us of the French nursery rhyme “Ah vous dirais-je Maman” (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, also known as The Alphabet Song!)
