I've noticed over the years that there really are a lot of people out there who do not know how to cross the street or walk in general in a parking lot. Sometimes they don't have any bags at all, sometimes they've got their hands full of grocery/shopping bags, and mostly the dangerous and dangerously slow ones have shopping carts with them.
Now, I would have to assume that most of these people have driven themselves to the store and should therefore know how to cross the street to avoid any traffic-related danger, or least how to not anger the automobile piloting population.
Apparently, parking lots have some sort of dimensional warp liek the bermuda triangle... but instead of making planes and boats disappear, parking lots make common sense disappear.
Above to the left is Figure 1-A. It's the only figure because if you're one of the ones who needs to read this, it might possibly be all that you can handle. You can see above in green that the best route across the lanes of traffic to the parked cars is a straight line. This is how courtious people cross the parking lot. Or this is how Gallant would cross the parking lot if you're an old school Highlights for Children fan. Notice that "Gallant" would also walk alongside the parked cars, and not in the middle of the lane while going to his car.
On the other hand, we have the example of how we should not cross the street in the parking lot noted in figure 1-A in red. Unfortunately, these people have not learned that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. The slowly meander like Goofus across the lane of traffic at a wide angle, to stay in your driving lane as long as possible... and most often this happens outside of the crossing area designated by criss-crossed white lines.
These people are also the ones who walk in the middle of the driving lane on the way to their car. Sometimes they even look back at you, and continue on their obstructive path. Oh wow, does this piss me off.
I know, pedestrians have the right of way... but why take the stupid way? All this does is delay & annoy people... even if only for a few seconds. Think about all the times this happens... add that up, and that's a whole lot of aggrivation time.
