more election related (withdrawal symptoms and surprise)
Posted by Chris Stein at 11/11/2008 01:51:00 PM

back to work yesterday, we ARE in fact beginning work on a new recording, more later...

so yesterday i was perusing the stuff out there (here) in cyber land, i just wrote 'Obama' into google to see what popped up and lo i was confronted by just insane racist rants given credibility i suppose by appearing as they do in 'forbes' and to the 'mail on line'... see i didnt realize at first that i was dealing with the 'daily mail' and that these two strange reports; one entitled "Obama the divider" and the other "say goodbye to the United States" (really) were the product of British not American crazy racists... ah! the light dawns, i guess the overt racism of various British peers of the realm is less understated and just plain out there than their counterparts over here... i guess you in the UK are used to this stuff, that is the more direct comments made by lunatics in the media, here its usually been unstated the way the opposition in the campaign used the word 'terrorist' as racial code... the 'say goodbye' piece was penned by one Peter Hitchens... he reports that the United States is now on its way to becoming the 'third world' nation that the UK already is, though he doesnt spell it out we must presume that his vision of the UK as third world is the result of the 'fuzzie wuzzies' and 'coloreds' who have come to his shores... he does go on to report anecdotally about his being in Washington DC on election day and that while he noted a few whites celebrating "among the Mexicans, Salvadorans and the other Third World nationalities, there was something like ecstasy." of course again we are to presume that this is a terrible thing... you get the idea... so i was real fucking pissed off for a day or so then wow! i am feeling defensive about the US government! whats gonna happen next? a really interesting week

aftermath
Posted by Chris Stein at 11/09/2008 10:06:00 AM

the final weeks that lead up to the election were steeped in a weird tension that was new for me in relation to the world of politics... i dont recall previously being so deeply involved with the outcome of any political event... i have mentioned watching the last election night four years ago from a hotel room in Lima Peru and feeling disgusted with the results but this time along with many others i was really caught up in the whole thing; daily looking at the polls on 'realclearpolitics.com' while engaging in endless discussions etc etc so i was very relieved by what went down... many things that i hadnt thought of came to the surface not the least of which was that should 'our side' not prevail there might be a lot more therapy needed than for those on the 'other side' happily this wasn't the case

we dont have a TV mostly cause of the kids and i absorbed all my election media from the internet... lots of time looking at clips on YouTube... after a while it hit me that every time someone posted some awful comment, raving about niggers and terrorists that this was being viewed by the whole world... this is part of the image of the US in the eyes of the world... all the stupid racism and negativity; and then the very people who are putting this stuff out there are the ones who are saying "why do they hate us!??"

in relation to the election there were more emotional moments for me than i can count... i will always remember watching the Chicago speech while sitting on the floor with Barbara in front of the computer... the kids were both aware of what was going on to varying degrees; Vali is just three so she only got a bit of it but Akira really understood at least that we were hoping that this Obama guy was going to be the next president... and a great deal of my seeing things though the kids eyes made for even more heavy emotions; while discussing all of the ramifications of the win Akira asked "what are slaves?" after hearing us use the word, how then does one explain this to a little kid who barely knows what a 'war' is?

really for the first time in years i feel like its not fifty fifty in the balance of the dark and light sides any more... for so long now so many of us have been living in this anti-government mode that its become second nature... those of us that were teenagers in the sixties had a taste of what was possible, what could be; all that togetherness, it was such a brief thing... i always wonder where it went, what happened to make that huge positive outpouring turn negative... now overnight there's a return, this is a lot what it felt like back then... this is the first that is a real counter to 9-11, an exorcism of that event maybe

so thanks to all of you who helped make this happen...i know that i am going to keep up my interest in what happens with Obama and the new government, maybe things are gonna lighten up now, it would be really nice for all of us...

dont forget terrorism doesnt work on people who aren't afraid

Somehow, though, in the back of my mind is this conviction that people who write about "white people cavorting with Mexicans and Salvadorans," or whatever, in earnest, like it's a BAD thing, are really just self-parodies. Like Dame Edna.

If not, they're REALLY sad (not to mention stupid) and deserve to be disappointed. So good. They got what they deserved.

It was an amazing night in Chicago when they called the results. I had the radio on and screamed out the car window at a man on the street, who screamed back. It's nice to scream on the same side for once!

Yes I've had burgeoning interest in politics too recently. Testing times.

I'm in the UK and have experienced much anti-English style racism from the very people I hollered 'Free Nelson Mandela' with in a park in London to Desmond Tutu in the 80s. I didn't bargain for this. I thought we'd have all 'joined hands' long since.

The Amercan election just about affects everyone. There was much jubilation here when we saw Obama win. A sigh of relief even.

There may be a hard core element who feel dubious about the result, but everyone I have spoken to believes the world can now begin to change for the better.

First though Chris, I think I'd like to see Blair and Bush in the stocks on the village green...I'd rot down good veg for that!

Nice to read you.

as a UK citizen I totally agree with your opening comments (and the entire blog post), and often feel ashamed to be British knowing full well what type of country I was born into and how racist Britain is , but worst of all, Britain as a whole is in complete denial about it. rather than rant on about it on you blog i'll just mention that I posted my feelings on racism on my site while I was working on a book about Tupac Shakur:
http://www.flameboycomics.co.uk/html/Tupac.html

you probably won't be aware of how Britain behaves towards assylum seekers. it's another case of throwing the human rights book out the windowand goosestepping themall the way to to detention blocks.
yes, I'm ashamed.

Good one, Chris.
I can only speak for myself, but my feeling is that an overwhelming majority of people here in Iceland at least (I know we don't count for much ;-) are VERY happy with the result of this election...which wasn't the case at all 4 years ago.
In the current economy state the U.S. (and the world) needs a leader who's playing with a full deck of cards. My only fear is that 4 years won't be enough for Obama to turn this mess (the war, the recession, etc.) around and the public's patience will have run out by then. But let's leave that topic for four more years.
Rock on.

I'm so relieved Obama won and as far as terrorism goes, if terrorism makes you paranoid, you are letting the terrorists win. Don't. Live each day to the fullest and get all you can out of life.

Awesome post---I continue to be surprised by the spark that still lives, that believes in this American experiment, and maybe we did just move a step or two towards the nation we are supposed to be.

thnx all...
for one thing, brits needn't feel any necessity to be apologetic in regards to the antics of the Daily Mail and its ilk... just within a couple of days of reading the above mentioned stuff, we got reports here about the latest 'scandal' to rock the foundations of the UK... that is that Jonathan Ross and Russel Brand both being sacked by the BBC after leaving rude messages on Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers Manuel) voicemail... apparently the BBC received all of two complaints but after the Mail got into the act and started pissing and moaning about morality etc bla bla then the whole thing blew up...
one couldnt make this stuff up... these guys live on bad vibes...
Americans could still learn a lot from the brits... not the least of all being the national view of firearms... its just un-British to shoot somebody... somehow that got into the great British unconscious in the same way that Americans all believe that one way to solve a problem is to point a finger and go bang-bang...
thanks again everyone...

Hi Chris,

I hope things will be better, but not because of who the president is. The left/right paradigm is a false one. Obama has hired all the old Clinton staff, this is the big change?

If you look at who gave the most money to Obama it was Goldman Sachs who's former CEO is now running the federal reserve. Goldman/Sachs gave 4 times more money to Obama than to McCain. Obama supported the bailout bill, he supported the war in iraq. Both McCain and Obama work for and take orders from the same people.

Look up, the bilderburg group, the club of rome, also go read the john warner defence authorization act (is only 15 pages or so), if you want to know what their plans are for us.

All the election proved to me was that the majority of people in this country are still in a deep sleep. Obama is going to continue on the course that Bush on was under "left" cover. Under Bush we were under socialist fascism, under Obama we will be under marxist fascism (left/right versions of the same tyranny). The Rothschilds family (and the british royal family) privately own the bank of england and control our privately owned federal reserve through their U.S. agents the Rockefellers. Also the Rothschilds family commissioned Karl Marx to write the communist manifesto, which he wrote in the city of London, England. One the key elements of the communist manifesto was a privately held central bank. The left/right paradigm is a theatrical production for us plebeians. It pits one against the other, while in the back room they are all buddies. It is exactly like pro-wrestling, I remember you used to be a big fan.

It is good that a minority was elected to the highest public office in this country, but is was the wrong guy. We are at the beginning of a major depression in the U.S.A. Remember when Bush senior talked about, "A New World Order"? Well it is here right now. Our government has been hijacked by foreign banks. We are under social, economic and bio attack. Google," Endgame : the blueprint for global enslavement" watch this movie and then post back what you think on this blog.

Take care Chris.

Out Here,

Robert from Detroit

p.s. I am on your friend list I think, I'v been trying to get a hold of you for like 4 years. message me if this gets posted.

hey glad you are still kicking
of course all of what you say is partly valid... but no one is ready for this stuff here yet... people dont have a clue about the federal reserve et al
i am hoping that Ob is a start that somehow he will transcend, if it is an act then i am buying into it along with a lot of others...i am not going to convict him yet it seems way premature...
i have seen a lot of these films and exposes of the 'inside stories' of who owns the world etc etc and its great that this info is getting out to the mainstream... we shall see
