In addition to her inimitable warble, Cuban sixties' singer La Lupe knew how to wear a gold lamé anything. Even though she died in '92, Lupe Victoria Yoli's MySpace, a jumbled tribute with album covers, videos, and song after song, helps keep her memory alive. There's La Lupe in a pale blue chiffon cocktail dress, with Mongo Santamaría playing his conga behind her. And an ecstatic La Lupe with tambourine, wearing a pleated denim shirt with matching jeans and puffy cap. On the cover of La Lupe es la Reina, she lies gracefully on a turquoise backdrop, one arm akimbo, in a white, traditional Caribbean dress and bandanna.
Of course she quickly conquered New York, with a tough voice that always makes you check to see if the record player has been set to 45, lots of (but not too much) liquid black eyeliner, and slick sculptural bouffants. By the late '60s Celia Cruz had become Tito Puente's favorite lead singer and La Lupe's career took a blow. She made a comeback later though with her style intact, as seen here.
