Sometimes, spirits get stuck in between worlds because they are afraid to move on. Some of them might think that they had done bad things and that they will be punished in some kind of "hell". It can be very scary for them. Some might have a very important message to leave before they go through the light; others had a very traumatizing death or died so fast that they are wondering what happened to them. There can be many other reasons.
The first step for this is to ask for protection by surrounding your place with a white light and ask the universe to only allow positive energy. Then, ask your guides to assist you and to keep the protection. They will be happy to help you.
Usually, when I do this, I explain to the soul that nothing bad will happen and that they will go to the next step and continue to learn. You can even ask them if they know someone who already is on the other side so they can help them to go through the light. Just let your mind go blank and see if you get some answers; they usually will tell you what they need. It's really important to understand that they we can help them only if they are willing to go through the light.
My good friend Jade taught me another way to do it with a pendulum. If you have a pendulum, take the time to call your guides and ask for protection and to only allow positive energy to come. By asking yes/no questions, you can get the answers and this can guide you to find the right things to say. (If you are new to this, I would recommend not to do this alone and to ask the help of someone who has experience.) After comforting the soul, you can ask them if they are ready to go and if they see the light. If yes, you can ask them to make the pendulum turn and to stop it once they've crossed the light.
Another way that you can do this is to guide them through the light by closing your eyes and see them with your third eye. Visualize the bright white light and the soul. You can even ask your spiritual guides to show them the way. Once the spirit has passed on the other side, you'll know it. Sometimes, they look at you for the last time and tell you something that you would not even have thought of. Sometimes, they show you what it looks like at the entrance. The most important is to be aware of the energy that is around you. The way we are aware of this is different for everyone.
For my part, it's a mix of physical sensations like chills, seeing the aura with my real eyes and visualisation, words that jump through my mind and emotions that are not mine. The messages usually come very fast and I don't have the time to think. This is how I know that I'm not thinking and that it comes from an external source.
Sometimes, it can get very intense and the soul can put is conditions on you so you feel what they are feeling. Some wants to show what happened when they died too. If it is too much, you have to tell them to step backward or cut the link between you by saying "it's enough" and passing you hand over your head "crown chakra". When the soul leaves, the energy leaves with him/her. It feels like pulling on a magnet. There is a little resistance and then you are separated.
If this is something really new for you and you don't want to feel anything, you can always ask your guides to help the beloved lost soul if he/she wants help. You can also tell your guides that you don't want the spirit to come close. They can do this at distance.
Each time I've helped souls, I felt very blessed that they had enough faith to finally go through the light. I do this with love for them.
