Now, last week I was wondering where the offense was. Because the way they were playing in the first two games, it felt like 1998 again, you know, the 3-13 season when we had no kind of offense whatsoever.
But against the Lions, with the Eagles sporting those awful looking jerseys, dropped 56 points, including 42 in the first half. Now they looked like they were on their way to scoring about 80 points, but I think everybody knew that was impossible even they looked like the way the Dallas Cowboys offense has looked so far in this young season. And that Cowboys team includes Terrell Owens.
And speaking of T.O., the Birds looked exactly like that team in 2004 which had T.O., you know, the 13-1 team that seemed like they scored on almost every possession and the defense didn't really have to do much because the opposing team had to pass the ball so much?
Well, that's exactly how they looked against Detroit because Westbrook scored first, but then the Lions struck back with a 2-yard TD run by running back Kevin Jones. And from there, they took a 21-7 lead from another TD run from Westbrook, this one from 5 yards out, and a 68 yard TD pass from McNabb Kevin Curtis.
Brian Westbrook, who didn't even practice on Wednesday and Thursday, finished with 110 yards rushing and 111 yards receiving, which added up to 221 total yards. And, by a coincidence, Kevin Curtis also finished with 221 yards on 11 catches. Reggie Brown was nearly invisible with just 2 catches for 23 yards, but it didn't really matter because of Curtis and Westbrook's huge games.
Now, this is the offense that all Eagles fans expect to see for the rest of the season, well not 56 points a game, but they want to see that same intensity that they came out with to start the game and that same firepower that they are used to seeing from Donovan McNabb and this offense since he injured his ankle in 2002.
And McNabb shouldn't be criticized at any point this week for his foul play in the first two weeks and his comments about black quarterbacks having to "do a little extra" to succeed in this league. He was all over ESPN all week leading up to this game because of those comments and he shut them up for at least one week.
But if he goes back and plays against the Giants they way he played against the Packers and the Redskins in the first three quarters (he actually played well in the 4th), he will go back to getting criticized and getting booed when he gets introduced at his home stadium.
Here is the offense we have been looking for in the first two weeks, and maybe it means that the Eagles are back or maybe this is a fluke but Philly fans will enjoy this win…..well at least until Wednesday. Because when Wednesday comes, we will already be looking forward to beating the Giants who still has a horrible defense. One game against the Redskins won't change my opinion of their D.
And next Sunday will be a big day. The Phils will finish off their season against the Nationals at 1:35 and that might be the deciding game in whether or not the Phillies will make the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. And to go along with that, The Eagles will kickoff at 8:15 against the G-Men to see if they can even their record at 2-2 to make it a 12-game season.
