This poem was written by fellow writer and good friend Heather Burch, and I asked if I could post it here. She captures the writer's heart so well.
How By Heather Burch How’re you going to write that book? With vivid prose? And plot and hook? How’re you going to make it breathe? Give it life, the story weave? Each word’s a jewel you gently place, You build your world with care, with grace. Fingers trembling, your soul--it bleeds. In hopes others will feel your need To touch a reader’s heart and mind, Connect with them, your souls entwine. That deep desire to make new life From words and thoughts, conflict and strife. It pushes, drives. Won’t let you rest Until you’ve given it your best. Exhausted and spent, you step away From the words you bled today. Upon your face, a smile forms. You met your goal. Conquered your storms. There’s no more to debate, discuss. The simple truth? You write. You must.

I'm approximately half-way through book 4 in my Offspring series. I love the actual writing process. For me, it's like a roller coaster ride that goes on for weeks. I can't wait to sit down at the computer and write, and I don't like doing things I normally like to do (social sites and email) because they take time from my writing. When I'm away from the computer, I'm often daydreaming about the story. My mind is either on a previous scene, where I'm thinking about what more I can do and put in, or on future scenes. I'm forgetful and probably a bit self-absorbed. It's kind of like living in a haze, with a goofy smile on my face at times. I'm sure people think I'm on drugs! Stories are the best kind of addiction, whether reading or writing them. I've had that as a reader too, when a book really grabs me. Or a movie that keeps me thinking long after I've seen it (7 Pounds did that recently). What magical stories have captured your imagination lately? I hope 2010 will be a magical story with you as the star!

Do I like you? Do I really like you? I get a ton of these comment requests, perfectly nice-looking people who want to know if I like them. I get to click yes or no. Now, being a decent sort of person, I just couldn't click No. I mean, I don't even know you. But it does beg the question: Does it matter if I like you or your picture? Would it shatter you if I was in an evil mood (maybe I just killed someone off in my book, heh heh) and clicked NO, and I shouted it out to the world, "Haaaaahhhhaaaaa, no, I don't like you at all!" [Insert evil laugh here, you pick the villain] Would someone please explain to me the purpose of these apps? Really, I'm curious. Don't take it personally, but I don't post them. My page would be full of them. I don't mind posting some promo stuff for other artists, but posting these seems to be feeding some mass consciousness of insecurity. But let me say for the record…I like you. You're a wonderful, divine being, no matter what your outer package looks like, no matter what your mood or personality, no matter that you hung up on your boyfriend or didn't let a car into the traffic stream the other day. Deep inside every one of you is a fabulous spirit who is here on this planet to accomplish something, which means you have the talent, drive, and whatever else is necessary to do so. So the most important question is…do YOU like you?

Hi, all!
First of all, for a non-HP Lovecraft person, the name of the convention is a mouthful itself. I had never heard of this convention, which occurs annually in ....St. Petersburg.., ..Florida...., before a friend of mine recommended I go. Necro is a convention for readers and writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. My Offspring series, having its genesis in a government program, sort of fit into the science fiction part, and I'm game to check out new conventions, so I signed on. Necromonicon is a very reasonably priced convention, with a fee of $35 for the entire weekend. That's a fraction of other writer's conferences I've attended. I signed on for two panels, The Seven Biggest Mistakes Writers Make and SF/Fantasy Women. When I arrived Friday late afternoon, the first thing I noticed were people in costumes, with makeup, or at the least, gothic T-shirts and black pants. Signing in was definitely a different situation than I'd ever encountered, having to produce ID and sign a conduct waiver. Hm, could I refrain from damaging the hotel? Brandishing real weapons? Acting outside ....Pinellas.. ..County.... decency laws? I'd give it my best shot. There were panels of workshops going on throughout the day and night, some relating to the business of writing. Besides the two that I was on, others included "You Say Self Publish Like It's a Bad Thing," Day Jobs for Writers," "You Don't Have to Be Screwed up to be a Writer-but it Helps," and "How to Grab Your Reader" with author Patricia Briggs. An interesting one I came in at the end of was the "Medieval Martial Arts Workshop" where sword maneuvers were being taught. There were several workshops that had nothing to do with writing, and some I had no idea what they were even about, like "Got Filk?" Others included "Amateur to Pro Game Creation," Gay Issues in Fandom," and "Intro to Meditation." Side events featured two scavenger hunts, one of which required participants to find bones that were hidden all around. Another fun event was the midnight showing of Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" with actors playing the parts on stage and the audience singing the songs. Author Catherine Asaro put on a concert. Saturday night was a costume competition followed by the Necronomini-Prom, the theme being, "Enchantment under the Sea." One of the best costume groups was the Zombie Girl Scouts (see picture)! As an author who's not in the sci-fi/horror/fantasy world, there was a lot that was foreign to me. In fact, I was foreign! As a romantic urban fantasy writer, I was definitely the anomaly, as odd as the Cthulhu was to me. I enjoyed being in an entirely different kind of atmosphere, and there's something interesting about knowing hardly anyone at a con. Having gone to many a Romantic Times convention, seeing people in costumes was nothing new. But these were pretty radical costumes, especially for the competition. The guy with the blue face who furtively slipped in, wearing black trench coat and bearing a weapon…well, if I weren't part of the con, that would have been pretty freaky, as was the guy dressed like a woman and toting his coffin around. Steampunk was popular, and so were zombie hunters. I applauded the many people who really put a lot into their costumes (see pictures). Compared to, say, Romantic Times, the emphasis was not as much on authors or even books as it seemed to be on gaming and costuming. All the events went as planned, even if the participants didn't (for example, someone set off a smoke bomb in one of the hallways). I never saw rowdy behavior (darn). Then again, I didn't go to any of the suite parties (at the Igor/Ygor party, folks drank free beer and shouted (eye)gor or (ee)gore! All in all, if you're in the Tampa-St. Pete area and are up for an unusual goth experience, I'd recommend Necronomicom! It's an adventure!

I'm not into sports at all. I kind of like NASCAR, but sitting there watching it for three and a half hours (live or on television) is not for me. Soccer, like World Cup, is cool, too, but I don't schedule my day around it. So I was surprised when I went to a roller derby match in Asheville, NC, for research and discovered I liked it. I really liked it! Last Sunday I went to another match down in Florida, and it was fun, too. Imagine women in fishnet stockings, tutu skirts, and garter belts, on quad skates, jostling for position. It's not hockey violence, but just enough shove and bump to amp up the action levels and make for great visuals. For the guys, you get to watch chick on chick action (yeah, I know how you're into that). For the gals, it's just plain fun to watch women who come from all walks of life get out there and kick butt. The matches are short, comparatively speaking, at about two hours. The best part are the names the women choose for their alter egos: Moong Chi, Mazel Tov Cocktail, Freckles Kaboom, Skelley Tor, and Candy Korn, Jamsterella, Lil Debbie Smack Cakes, Alexorcist, and Mess You Up Buttercup. And I think it's really cool that there's a movie out right now about roller derby: Whip It. So find out where roller derby is in your neighborhood and check it out! http://www.myspace.com/ftmyersderbygirls http://www.myspace.com/blueridgerollergirls
Have a great day!

Cool French song. I have no idea what they're saying, but I've always dug foreign music. I can enjoy the music in a different way without knowing what the words are.

So why do we keep doing something even though it's painful? The words Painful Joy popped into my mind as I kept sliding down this waterfall, over the bumpy rocks, and into the big puddle of very cold water at the bottom. Then get up, hold onto the old tree trunk, and climb up the slippery slope again. Oh, but it's fuuuunnnn! Yes, and the slipping on the moss and slimy rocks (Forget dignity!), screaming in pain...loved it! Being a kid is the best part of life when you're a grown up. Too bad we don't enjoy it more while we're actually kids. We're too busy wanting to be grown ups. Ack!
Do something kid-like today! Even if it hurts :)
Cheers, Jaime

I had a fabulous time in DC at the Romance Writers of America conference! I didn't actually get to see a lot of the city, other than the day we spent doing site research for book 3. This is the wacky thing about being a writer. We're walking around this beautiful park (Falls Park, MD) with my great aunt and uncle, and anyone who might have overheard me heard this: "Mm, yes, this would be a great place for someone to try to rape a woman! The foliage would cover them, and then he could dump her body right there in the reservoir." You know, I get caught up in my story and don't think much about who's in the vicinity...I could tell you stories! I will tell you stories, but for now I'll keep it about DC/Maryland.
I found the mansion where my bad dude moves his program, and if anyone was inside the house, they probably would have been a bit freaked. Not that we trespassed and took pictures from their windows or anything. See, this is how I find the right house: not being familiar with the DC area, I don't know offhand where the really big homes are. So I go to a realtor's website and find one. Then I Google map it and then look at the satellite view. So it's pretty neat to actually go there after I've written about it. We climbed up on a big berm and took some pictures and just got nosy in general.
The conference was great! I love seeing friends I haven't seen in a long time, and love seeing booksellers like Rosemary Potter (RWA's Bookseller of the Year!) and May Boonpitak from Mostly Romance (in Thailand). This is a professional conference with loads of workshops for all levels and many publishers and agents. It's always great to see Heather Graham and her fantastic family and Janet Evanovich, who was a keynote speaker, and Kayla Perrin and new friends like Jeannie Ruesch.
The only bad part was catching the Metro back to my family's place in Alexandria. The Red line (which my uncle was kind enough to tell me was the one that had the big crash recently) was being maintenanced and not only were there delays, when we got on, it was a body mash. Yuck. And then the escalators going up/down were like miles high and angled sharply. It's funny, I've had dreams over the years about being at the top of these stairs that are so steep you can hardly navigate them, and there I was! But I managed (don't look, check email on Blackberry, focus on the tiny screen...). I don't have a fear of heights, but I have trepidation at steep drops (roller coasters...ack!).
Well, now I've got revisions and mailings to do, so back to work! Have a great day!
Cheers, Jaime
