Hello Friends,

I've posted a few new blog post on my "official" blog spot, so check it out.  My music on NBC, sheet music, and more!

I have been looking into setting up a more professional looking blog for my music updates for some time now, as I have been using MySpace for my music blog for the past 2 and 1/2 years.

I just wanted to let you all know my NEW blog address for future music updates. Please bookmark it if you wish to stay up to date, as I won't be posting much on this blog anymore.  Maybe every now and then, but I don't want to have to go and update a bunch of different sites and want everything to more centrally located.

I'm on WordPress now (a fabulous little blogsite, if I might say).  The address is:
http://jenniferthomasmusic.wordpress.com/

I've transferred all of my past MySpace posts onto there so they are all archived, and posted my latest blog this evening, entitled "Behind the Scense Look at The Lullaby Album".

I hope you will come say hello and read if you ever get the chance.  Thank you all! :)

The answer to that:  Facebook.

No offense to MySpace, but I really prefer Facebook these days more.

I don't know if it is because I feel like it is geared more for adults and myspace feels overrun with adolsence and garage bands.

Or is it because I can't even listen to friends music players on myspace anymore without annoying ads popping up every few minutes.

Or if it is because I don't think I even know 1% of the 1,207 friends that I have on Myspace, but I know about 97% of my friends on Facebook.

Or if it's because when I visit myspace I feel stressed because it's such a cluttery website, whereas Facebook feels clean.

Yes, I do think it has something to do with all of those.

So that is where I've been lately.  I'll still be here, but I only log in about once every 4 or 5 days or so.

Cheers!

I finally finally finally just got back my HDV footage of my Seattle concert from December of 2007 (the concert I did with Jace Vek at Benaroya Hall).  I performed a really fun version of The Flight of the Bumble Bee called "Boogie Woogie Bumble Bee" (by Jack Fina) and put together a clip just for the heck of it.  I was pregnant at the time - hence the little baby belly.

Hopefully soon I'll have more clips to post from that concert, as well as another concert that I did in Salt Lake on a fabulous 9 foot Fazioli piano that I was only just recently able to get the footage for.

Are you excited?

Fasten your seatbelt....

I'm frustrated, just a little bit.

I just bought a new computer for my music studio - which if you know anything about the type of BEEF of a computer you have to have for studio software you know it's not cheap.

I know I'm going to get flack from Jamey for this, but I'm a PC person. :)  No Mac's for me. Yes I know Macs are more geared for artists, but that's just how it is and I make no apologies.

Everywhere you go and research, the latest and greatest news is you have to get a 64 bit operationg system, processor, and sequencing program.  This enables you to pull huge files and run them simultaneously without freezing up your computer or a huge amount of latency.

Check.  Got all three 64 -bit areas with my new computer.

Now the problem we have been running into is that a lot of my beautiful, wonderful, favorite and EXPENSIVE VST software programs are just not up with the game yet.  We've had to go to all the various websites and download update after update after update, and still some of them won't work on a 64 bit system!

FRUSTRATING!

So I've spent all this money on a computer to make my studio time go much faster and smoother, and yet so far I haven't been able to even use my key software packages yet.

Now we're talking about upgrading all my software, even changing some out to a different brand (From Synthogy Ivory to EastWest Quantum Leap Pianos), but it would be a $3,000 switch.

UGH.

Just wondering what other musicians are currently running on a 64 bit system, what problems you've had with your 32 bit software programs w/upgrades or n not and how you've been able to bypass them?

Tuckered Out New Computer Owner

Hello Friends,
I was going to write a big ole' post about this, but Jace already did a way better job explaining it than I could ever do....so I'm reposting what he wrote on his blog.  In a word - join the radio partyline next Wednesday 3pm EST.  See below...

I just experienced possibly the longest, hardest, drawn-out process in order to obtain my mechanical license for the use of the Billy Joel song I arranged for my upcoming lullaby album.  I thought it would be mega helpful to post the valuable information I finally obtained for anyone else who needs to find this information in the future (as I googled and googled and only came across one article with leading information and the author still didn't provide details).

So with that said, here you are.  A gem of information that will save you hours, days, even weeks of time emailing back and forth with publishing companies, record labels and so forth.

To obtain such licensing, you do not in fact go through his publishing company (Hal Leonard), but through his accounting firm that handles royalties:

Gelfand Rennert & Feldman LLP
1880 Century Park East #1600
Los Angeles, CA  90067
Royalty-info@grfllp.com

I found this info only after hours (and days and weeks) going through Harry Fox, Hal Leonard, EMI, BMI and finally ASCAP. I even searched around for other artists who had done Billy Joel songs and emailed them asking where they obtained their licenses. No replies of course (assuming they did get licenses?).  I'm a member of ASCAP and you would think I would have been smart enough to just go there.  It was my last stop and even then the info they provided was tricky.  I ended up having to do more searching to find the actual website for Gelfand Rennert & Feldman.

Anywho, may this blog show up on many google searches to come and help anyone else trying to get licensing for this songwriter.  Oh, and by the way, the turn around time for the license (once I actually found the right place) was literally only 3 days.  SO FAST.

Oh, and one more thing, if you are printing sheet music you have to go through his publisher, Hal Leonard, for a completely seperate license.  Not to mention you also have to submit a request for "permission to arrange", and another seperate license if you want to print the lyrics in the liner notes of the cd.  Holy cow.

I just posted a new track, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".

Now a little info on this piece.

I really cannot take the credit for the fabulousness of this piece.  Yes, I composed the arrangement and performed the piano part...but the orchestration? None other than my talented friend Jace Vek (in my top friends).  He really does do amazing work.  After I heard what he did with my song, I actually said outloud "Man, my orchestrations sound puny compared to his." LOL

Anyway I can't say enough how much I love what he did, and how talented he is.

Anyway, this is just a little sneak peek to my mother (Carolyn Southworth - in my top friends) and I's upcoming lullaby album coming out next month.  There will be 15 tracks all together.

Twilight

(Music by Carolyn Southworth)

Dream Weaver

(Music by Carolyn Southworth)

All the Pretty Horses

(Music traditional, arranged by Carolyn Southworth)

Scottish Lullaby

(Music by Carolyn Southworth)

Sweet Dreams

(Music by Carolyn Southworth, with additional vocals by Jillian Goldin)

All Through the Night

(Music traditional, arranged by Carolyn Southworth)

I Am a Child of God

(Music by Mildred Pettit, arranged by Carolyn Southworth)

Brahms Lullaby

(Music by Johannes Brahms, arranged by Jennifer Thomas)

Baby of Mine (Preston's Song)

(Music by Jennifer Thomas)

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

(Music traditional, arranged by Jennifer Thomas, additional orchestration by Jace Vek)

Baby's Dream Waltz

(Music by Jennifer Thomas)

Goodnight My Angel

(Music by Billy Joel, arrangement by Jennifer Thomas)

Dancing on the Clouds

(Music by Jennifer Thomas)

Two of these songs will be remixed and spruced up as bonus tracks. One is this one I posted today (Twinkle Twinkle) with the orchestration done by Jace Vek. The other being "Sweet Dreams" with vocals by the very talented Jillian Goldin (also in my top friends).  We've also got a Grammy award winning sound engineer working on the mixing and mastering, so no doubt it will sound fabulous.

Stay tuned for more clips soon.

P.S. If you love this track, don't forget to hop on over to Jace's page and drop him a note. :)

The maestro slowly lifts his arms up high as he prepares to bring them down to the ivory keys to effortlessly play his grandioso concerto.

His audience waits in longing anticipation.

And BOOM the first note whisks away the hearts of listeners throughout the concert hall...

He looks over to his audience for loving approval of his musical creation...and to make sure they are still listening.

And then pauses as he holds one long, long, LONG note because he.....uh...because he got sidetracked and tired.

The maestro will now interrupt this concerto to take a little snackie and a nap.

Yes, that is my little 7 and 1/2 month old, Preston. I just had to share what a little pianist he is.  Preston has been hearing the sound of a piano since he was in the womb - even shared the concert stage with me a few times while I was pregnant.

And now he can't get enough of it. He knows exactly what to do with a piano.

This video was taken by my husband in my home studio with .Preston at one of my keyboards.  He's got some powerful chops.

Do you ever Google yourself and see what comes up?

Will just introduced me to "Google Alerts" where you can have links emailed to you where your name is discussed.  For an artist, it's just a great way to read what is being said about your music.

Well today was the first time I used Google Alert.  Holy cow, I didn't realize how nervous I would be to click on some of these links.  I mean I realize as an artist I have had to develop a thick skin and take both good and bad comments about my music, but this Google Alert thing makes me feel like I am spying on people's secret conversations about me or something. Who knows what I will read!

Today's entertainment was stumbling across a blog where a gentleman said he had stumbled across my website and though he wasn't a fan of every song he loved "A Beautiful Storm" and encouraged others to check out my site.  And then underneath I saw the list of comments.

So I took a deep breath and decided to check out the comments too.

It was all very positive, one person even said I was drop dead gorgeous (thank you anonymous commenter!).  But the thing that really made me laugh was how some of this guy's commenters said they hated classical music...that it made them sick, or hurt their ears.  Another commented that "...though I don't enjoy Classical music, I really like John Tesh."

Okay, John Tesh and Classical do not even belong in the same sentence.

And then I was like, "Since when has my music been Classical??"

Sorry to tease the undereducated music listeners out there, but just because music has accoustical piano in it does not mean it is "Classical".  I mean I could get really technical and point out that people generalize the term "Classical" so much that they don't even realize that true Classical music is music written between the years 1750 - 1820.  Beethoven?  Nope not a Classical composer.  He was a Classical Crossover as most of his music was written in the Romantic era.

I really hope that people are not not giving my music a chance because they fear it is "Classical".  LOL Is it because on my website I classify my music as "New Age Classical"?

I think when I redo my website in 2009 I'm gunna have to come up with a better description of my genre/style.  Any ideas?

Anyway.  That is beside the point.  I don't even have a point.  Just Google yourself.  What have YOU learned about yourself on the web? LOL
