After Lucky was asked to leave the band, was there any thought in your mind that Jenoah might be over? What was the strongest factor for you in continuing as a band?
When I personally kicked Lucky out of the band I can honestly say that I felt strong and confident about the future of Jenoah, at the moment of course I felt awkward and maybe even a little nervous about the boys reaction to the news, especially because we were supposed to leave for a month and a half long U.S. tour, that we cancelled after kicking the boy out. I expected a lot of negative reactions from our fans. The fact that his name is Lucky and the fact that he is a very energetic and entertaining guitarist/vocalist makes most people disappointed at the fact that he is gone. He was also one of the main songwriters of the E.P. we released "Morning Is When Jenoah Wakes Up" (oh and by the way, we do not play any of the songs off the EP, nor do we sell the thing) and the songs were very enjoyable, but they just weren’t " the juice" and all I want is "the juice". We all have an idea of what "the juice" is. It’s the blood , the soul , the spirit, the guts, THE INSIDES!!! with the "kicking out " of Lucky, whose real name is Bradley ( never deny your true name, its a purposeful curse) Jenoah has been able to channel "the juice" clearly , and sincerely, and every single day I am satisfied to know that what I am singing , and sending through time and space is TRUE. NOT JUST FUN!!! And definitely not "cool." FUCK cool, fuck impressing the public, fuck trying to be catchy and marketable, just play what comes, even if it is catchy don’t try not to be. FUCK caring about what anybody thinks, let the embarrassment flow, we all know this. FUCK a member who believes that they themselves are a representation of all these things, yet at the same time live a completely negative and contradictory life…a disease...... the ultimate drain of truth imagination..."and a misguided youth falls to the floor. He's screaming and kicking and crying on the floor. He cries; '’nobody cares!!! nobody wants to do what I want!!! I need more alcohol…" He forces himself up off the bed and pretends to chug a bottle of whiskey, when I myself know there is only about half a shot left inside. 'Oh my god I'm so drunk , I'm gonna fucking puke' he runs into the bathroom and yaks and makes strange noises, but I can tell he's not really puking, I am a professional fucking puker, I know what it fucking sounds like. I walk into the bathroom and find the boy hung over the toilet as if to be shivering, and trying to force sweat...there is no puke. I pick him up and lay his body onto a bed...no thank you's...no response at all... the boy is really going all the way with this act... kind of like that time I faked a seizure while being arrested, I had to go all the way, and I couldn’t stop, and I was released...but this boy has no idea, he has never experienced anything intense, never experienced true human sadness, is not appreciative of the world, for what reasons?... girls, the government and confusion. My god, this is ridiculous. Brattiness is just plain pathetic, and angst is dead within my realm. Lets grow , lets change every fucking day...the boy says in his pseudo drunken cry 'I dont want to change!!!' I say ' what?... that’s...thats...not right man.' He doesn’t stop. 'Yes it is!!!' Give it up. The teenagers are dead, I wanna be old.
Would you say, as a band, your musical influences remain the same, even without Lucky's writing?
I would have to say that the musical influences have changed quite dramatically. Like I said earlier now we have "the juice" there is no need for influence, we have our bodies, our minds, our penis, our vagina. We are ours. I hope people can accept that and not think that I am trying to boast our unique sound, I am only saying what I know is true. I really can’t think of any influential bands with this music directly. I feel as musicians we are very influenced by Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd , but the music does not remind me of either of the bands.
What was your first post-Lucky practice like?
It was really enjoyable. Everyone was very excited to be without him, and we wrote a song called "Air Conditioner". It was a rebirth for the band; a breath of very fresh air; but I could still feel a sort of a curse in the air…well, of course, we were in Sacramento...but all was well.
You wrote the song "Rites Of Winter" for the Drive Thru Records Holiday Compilation (2004.) How was recording it? What, if anything, did you want to prove to your fans with it?
With that song especially I wanted to prove to fans that Jenoah could hit on the subject of Christmas and also embrace the subject, yet at the same time ignore its snide and greedy purposes. We wrote the music for the song about a week before recording it and we weren’t planning on using it in the studio, or even presenting our label with a Christmas song, but then something came over us. I guess you could call it nervous energy, maybe even a conscious energy that weaves spontaneous-ness and emotional truth together. We recorded the music, I sang improv and the music machine spit it out on to the compilation.
In your opinion, what is "Morning When Jenoah Wakes Up" to you, now that you've said you'll never play any songs from it again?
“Morning…” to me is a certain time and a certain place. I don’t necessarily hate the songs, but like wrote earlier…"no juice". The songs just don’t make me want to cum. Maybe we will still play "Coughing Up Blood", but I am unsure.
Where are some of your favorite places to play live?
I love playing The Glass House in Pomona, even though I have not played there with Jenoah, and Chain Reaction is always very enjoyable. I think my favorite place I've played is actually this bar and motel place in El Paso, TX, I can't remember the name, but the energy on stage is amazing.
What bands would you say you've bonded with the most?
I most definitely bonded with Socratic on our first tour. Also, Bear vs Shark; they’re great lads. Name Taken - I sure think they are sweet ole boys, the Steel Train guys, even though our meetings were short, I dig em as people. Endicott were amazing people, I really love them boys, and Folly, the open minded children of the East. This Providence and I ate a lot of cookies together, Paulson and I are just like a cartoon show together, it’s great. The Break are a bunch of Greaser-like bad asses with hearts of gold and deep rooted intellect, I dig that about them. Man, what kind of question is this? I'm just going to stop listing bands.
What should we expect from you guys in the near future?
Expect to go to a Jenoah show, watch us play, and dream about it afterwards, and maybe even have a cigarette with some coffee (black). [By the way, that ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’ movie is horrible] In fact… that sounds like a good idea.... good day to you.
-Stephen Joshua Martinez.

This review will be in the February issue of Jersey Beat.
JENOAH – Morning is When Jenoah Wakes Up (Drive-Thru) Aside from having some of the most innovative packaging that I’ve seen with a major-indie label CD (using a number of cards to contain the lyrics from the disc), Jenoah ranks right up there with Amber Pacific for being the most surprising emo band of 2004. Using a true multi-part harmony (instead of just having a screamer with a melodic singer), Jenoah really makes a strong case for having some of the most lush music out there. Instead of just wowing their audience with a strong set of vocals, Jenoah actually ensures that the instrumentation and arrangement on “Morning” is nothing to scoff at. “Ex-Suits” is infused with a tremendous energy owing much to Stephen’s bass work and the high-hats of Zachary. Even though there are moments on this EP where one individual steps up and wows the audience, much like Modest Mouse, there are just grooves that Jenoah gets into that will drive listeners crazy with delight. Even though the EP has only five originals (two re-mixes, as it were), Jenoah is careful enough to create a sound that is distinctly theirs among these songs. Showing a level of distinction far beyond what a newer band should, Jenoah is destined to make big waves in the emo-core movement in the next few years. Solid musicianship mix with harmonies never heard and a pop sensibility that even Ashley Simpson would be jealous in this EP, and I am not ashamed to say that I want more! Moving from harmony or harmony, tempo to tempo, genre to genre in the space of seconds, Jenoah can do everything equally well. Moving imperceptibly through alternative, rock, and emo, Jenoah make it a point to never date their music. “Jamie” is the essential track for all lovers, and instead of waiting twenty years after the band has started, Jenoah puts forth the demo material to finish off this disc.
Both if the demo tracks feel unfinished compared to the official mixes found elsewhere on the disc; however, any move by a band to increase the bang for my buck is a great thing, considering current CD prices. While there are not as radio-accessible tracks on “Morning” as there were on “Fading Days” by Amber Pacific, but Jenoah avoids some of the clichéd guitar work and arrangements that held Amber Pacific back on their disc. This is one of the only EPs worth picking up from 2004, so go down to your local indie record shop and grab it. – James McQuiston

It's close to the end of our small West Coast tour with very little accounted for. We were making attempts to log on via wireless but they were proven futile. We've been traveling as a three peice along with our man Davey who's taking care of business, and is just a beatiful beatiful lil' lumberjack.
Jenoah is in Yucaipa, CA right now just hanging out and enjoying our couple of days off in the I.E NINE OHHHH NINE! I'm Waiting to take the bus to Cuca's and get my dose of dank mexican food while I'm in So Cal. To everyone that lives else where and thinks they know good mexican food. You don't, and FUCK YOUR TACO TIME WASHINGTON! The narliest, shittiest, most krunk DelTaco ever couldn't compare in terribleness.
I would like to personally thank everyone who seemed authentically stoked at our Knitting Factory and Chain Reaction shows that was the mAgiK
baby. It was good to come back to So Cal and have such a good time playing. Saturday at jerry's in bakersfield then fresno at big game then back to sacto. thank you to everyone that has come out to support us and look for our U.S. tour jan 14th-feb 21st

JENOAH INTERVIEW 11/15/2004: 1) So i just have to start off by asking how did you come up with the name jenoah? JENOAH: Jenoah is a fictitious dream character of mine. Within the dream, Stephen's grandfather Lyndell asked me if I could help him find "Jenoah". Stephen and I agreed that it would be a good band name. Especially running against "Send For the Versus" and "To Cassiopeia". 2) Your Online EP got over 40,000 downloads did you expect that many kids to check you guys out being a new band? JENOAH: I could honestly say that we as a band were expecting quite a few downloads, due to the fact that Drive-Thru almost seems like a sub-culture. But no where near forty thousand. That's just fucking amazing to us, and we thank everyone who took the time to listen. 3) There has been some rumors circulating about the departure of your guitar player would you like to clear anything up about that? JENOAH: Overall, Lucky leaving the band is a very personal and sensitive subject for some more than others within our group. I am confident in stating that I think it was the most beneficial for everyone's emotional and musical well being. For the people or Jenoah appreciators that don't already know, we will not be playing anything off of Morning is When Jenoah Wakes Up ever again. Those songs represent a time and a place that this band was a part of, and we as a whole feel it would be wrong to persist in trying to promote or distribute music that can no longer be reproduced. Lucky was an extremely large contributor to the writing of that ep, and to attempt to travel from city to city playing those songs without him would be immoral. A rumor that I personally have heard is that Jenoah has been out of commission since Lucky's absence, and that we have faced a series of unfortunate happenings including all of our equipment being stolen, To clarify, Jenoah has been very active this whole time. The writing has just been pouring out of us, only half of our equipment was stolen, so we downgraded slightly. The band has stayed strong as a three piece with accompaniment. 4) I've heard the new demos and the sound has really progessed, are you happy with the change? is this what you were trying to achieve? JENOAH: Thank you for using " progressed ". We are very happy with our current sound and the possibilities. The overall vibe of the music is more mature and wise as opposed to angsty and erratic. As the drummer I feel more rhythmic confidence, and steadiness in the flow and structure. What we are trying to achieve music that we love to play. 5) what do you think helped develope the change in your style? and why? JENOAH: Many things developed the change. The loss of a the physical member to the material instrument, the acceptance and understanding of the new Jenoah, the growth and development as musician and human beings, and the drive to bust our asses to write and record 6) Are you guys going to be touring soon? JENOAH: We are doing a small West Coast tour from December 2nd to the 16th California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona, and a nation wide tour Jan 13th to February 22nd, East Coast, South East, South West, West, and North West on the Scout.Net Tour. This providence is on with us in december. jan is sponsored by thescout.net w/ endicott, paulson, kaddisfly, and a few others yet to be determined. 7) What are some of the main goals you guys are trying to achieve right now? JENOAH: Our main goal is to keep writing and touring like fucking madmen. 8) When can we except a full length from you? JENOAH: Uncertain, we are still discussing with the label 9) any last words you'd like to add? JENOAH: Hi Mom! (just kidding) Come see us people! and don't be shy! and our new Website WILL be up before December. So visit that. There will be a forum that you can express your opinions on so don't hesitate. and ALL NEW MERCH! as well.
