The Consolation of the Dead

Painting as Narrative

When was the last time you saw a newly created piece of artwork done in a narrative mode? The fact is, that narrative painting is so rare today I find myself needing to define exactly what narrative painting is. I guess, to put it into today's vernacular, it's Heroes or CSI rendered in paint on canvas. It's story-telling art, and the very fact that I have to use TV shows to describe it says a lot about why Narrative Art is so scarce these days.

The much-maligned Norman Rockwell was probably the last of the great narrative painters. It's no accident that the end of his career coincided quite closely with the advent of story telling in the electronic mode. A long artistic tradition dating as far back as cave painting with its wild animal hunts, up through Egyptian and Medieval wall painting, to Jan van Eyck's Marriage of Giovanni Arnofino, Michelangelo's Genesis on the Sistine ceiling, and European/American Genre painting, has become in danger of vanishing in our lifetime.

There remains only two last vestiges of this art in the world today in two widely divergent and relatively minor areas. One is the highly refined and dynamically imaginative art of the comic book, usually of the super-hero/science fiction variety; while the other is a relic of the fine art of history painting in the form of works depicting exploits of military combat. Both of these have to be included in the realm of fine art, given their popularity and their collectibility (albeit narrowly focused) in various archival forms amongst the highly devoted individuals who admire such things.

Both genres have long, colourful tradition of artistic development with comic book art stretching back almost one hundred years, and combat artist having painted every conflict from the Punic Wars to Desert Storm. For better or worse, neither of these forms of story-telling art seems in danger of demise.

When I was cutting my artistic chops in my teen years, I was constantly inspired by the books I read or the music I heard to create art that communicated this to even the most casual viewer. I wasn’t given the historic terms and social imapct of what I was trying to do until Angelo Ciotti’s Art History course at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

I discovered Elizabeth Hand’s writing at one of the junctures where your life is about to change forever. The impact has not been lost on me and anyone who’s read my ramblings knows just how big a fan of her writng I am.
The second book of hers I ever read was Winterlong, her darkly sensual debut novel that took the science fiction and general reading public by storm. Heralded as a considerable stylistic and imaginative accomplishment, as noteworthy in its way as Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, by "People" magazine, Winterlong explores the disturbing remains of humanity irrevocably altered by genetic engineering run amok.

Amid the ruins of a once great city, a girl and her beautiful long-lost twin brother are drawn to the seductive voice of a green-eyed boy whose name is Death. Together they must journey through a poisoned garden filled with children who kill and beasts that speak--all the while resisting the evil that compels them to join in a nightmare ritual of blood that will unleash the power of the ancients and signal the end of humanity.

Vibrating with mythic resonance, the novel unfolds free-form, and envelopes you in a realm where Lovecraftian beasts lurk in sunken gothic cathedrals. The intoxicating language soaks into your blood as your brain becomes acclaimated to the constant barrage of sensory assault.

As I was re-reading Winterlong recently, I was looking at a fantastic book of art by Alphose Mucha my friend Della had given me a few years ago as a birthday present. In it I stumbled apon the panels Mucha had designed for the German Theater in New York city at the turn of the century. My brain instantly overlaid the characters from Winterlong on the artists’ interpretation of theatrical tragedy and once again I was on the road to creating a narrative painting.

This is the first study for what will be a much larger piece I plan to produce over this summer. The elements are all there, but there are still improvements that will bring it closer to what my mind initially envisioned. Stay tuned...

Have you cried today at all?

Nope

Certain flaws are necessary for the whole.  It would seem strange if old friends lacked certain quirks.  ~Goethe

Nothing that is complete breathes.  ~Antonio Porchia, Voces, 1943

Would you rather it be sunny or rainy?

I can’t have BOTH?

Guilty. This is also a good way to gain a stalker, FYI.

None that I know of.

Do you have any expensive jewelry?
There’s a difference between expensive and priceless. I have priceless jewelry.

How many close friends do you have?
Seven. That seems like a lucky number.

What is your brother’s name?
I usually just call ‘em Mr. Perfect and Butt-Munch.

Do you have a friend of the opposite sex you can talk to?
I do.

Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
Cause=Effect.

Today’s lesson:

Energy exists in many forms, such as heat, light, chemical energy, and electrical energy. Energy is the ability to bring about change or to do work. Thermodynamics is the study of energy.

First Law of Thermodynamics: Energy can be changed from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed. The total amount of energy and matter in the Universe remains constant, merely changing from one form to another. The First Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation) states that energy is always conserved, it cannot be created or destroyed. In essence, energy can be converted from one form into another.

The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that "in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state." This is also commonly referred to as entropy. A watchspring-driven watch will run until the potential energy in the spring is converted, and not again until energy is reapplied to the spring to rewind it. A car that has run out of gas will not run again until you walk 10 miles to a gas station and refuel the car. Once the potential energy locked in carbohydrates is converted into kinetic energy (energy in use or motion), the organism will get no more until energy is input again. In the process of energy transfer, some energy will dissipate as heat. Entropy is a measure of disorder: cells are NOT disordered and so have low entropy. The flow of energy maintains order and life. Entropy wins when organisms cease to take in energy and die.

Nosey fucker, aren’t you?

Just wash your hands more frequently and stop soul-kissing the pigs.

No, not you, officer...

Why yes, I would like front row seats and a backstage pass. Thanks!

No, the pigeons need to be dead for that to work right.

If I could just get it all on paper the way I see it in my head.

The next thing you know will be the thing you are being told for the last time.

Powerful large rats, gentlemen, powerful large rats.

When did it become “all about you”?

Yes, this is the best Star Trek movie so far. What an incredible debt of expectation they have set up for the next one.

There are always survivors at a massacre. Among the victors, if nowhere else.

Drugs have taught an entire generation of Americans the metric system.

You always second guess yourself. Just think of all the time you'd save if you just trusted yourself.

Never confuse movement with action.

Art has never been made while thinking of art.

It's about what YOU are going to do with the short time you have left on this earth.

Well, spring sprang. We've had our state of grace and our little gift of sanctioned madness, courtesy of Mother Nature. Thanks, Gaia. Much obliged. I guess it's time to get back to that daily routine of living we like to call normal.

I’m off to Emerald City Comic Con this weekend and it always makes me nostalgic for the days back in Ohio where going to a Show meant raising hell after hours with Dangerman, Dabe, Don, and the other miscelanious Jerry-ites.

I tuned into pandora.com and this song popped up on the GBS channel.

So, here’s to all you pub-crawlers, past and present. Cheers!

The Crawl

by Spirit of the West

Well, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

It all began one afternoon on the shores of Ambleside,
We were sittin' there quite peacefully with the rising of the tide;
When an idea it came to mind for to usher in the Fall,
So we all agreed next Friday night we'd go out on the crawl.

Well, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

We planned to have a gay old time, the cash we did not spare,
We left all the cars at home and paid the taxi fare;
I got out to Horseshoe Bay a little after five,
From a table in the corner I heard familiar voices rise.

Well, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

Spirits they ran high that night, old stories we did share,
Of the days when we were younger men and never had a care;
The beer flowed like a river and we drank the keg near dry,
So we drained down all our glasses and were thirsty by-and-by.

And, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

Park Royal Hotel, The Rusty Gull, Square-Rigger and Queen's Cross,
We'd started out with eight good boys but half had gotten lost;
For you'll never keep the lads together when their eyes begin to rove,
So there was just the three of us that made it to Deep Cove.

Well, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

We arrived out at The Raven just in time for the last call,
The final destination of this the first annual crawl;
We dug deep into our pockets there was no money to be found,
Nine miles home and for walking we are bound.

And, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.

Well, we're good old boys, we come from the North Shore,
Drinkers and carousers the likes you've never seen;
And this night, by God! We drank till there was no more,
From the Troller to the Raven with all stops in between.....

Tarot Temperance

In most modern tarot decks, Temperance stands between Death and The Devil. He or she (traditions vary) guides the souls of the dead to judgment.

In some traditions, Temperance does the judging. In those schools, the cups in Temperance’s hands are the functional equivalent of scales, and Temperance, like Maat, an Egyptian goddess of wisdom, judges the soul’s worth before passing it on to the beasts of the underworld. In some stories, Maat both judges the souls against a feather and protects the scale from being tipped by Set. If the soul is heavier than a feather, it will be fed to the eater of souls.

In other traditions, Temperance is the remixing of life, accepting the dead into the underworld, into the blessed lands, and deciding what to send back into the fray. Every atom in our bodies has passed through thousands of forms, and will pass through thousands more. Temperance reminds us of our connection to the greater forces.
Some Jungians say that Temperance represents the unconscious, which can guide us, they contend, to a deeper understanding of ourselves. The one foot on the land, the other in the water, represents the unification of the external and internal, conscious and unconscious, realms.

Under these approaches, when Temperance appears, it is a warning or invitation to be prepared for a confrontation with the deepest questions of who we are, who we think we are, and who we will become.

My choice of the samurai should be fairly clear if you consider the Bushidō code and what the samurai stood for. According to the Japanese dictionary Shogakukan Kokugo Daijiten, "Bushidō is defined as a unique philosophy (ronri) that spread through the warrior class from the Muromachi (chusei) period." In Bushidō: The Soul of Japan (1899), author Nitobe Inazō wrote: "...Bushidō, then, is the code of moral principles which the samurai were required or instructed to observe... More frequently it is a code unuttered and unwritten... It was an organic growth of decades and centuries of military career."
Nitobe was not the first person to document Japanese chivalry in this way. In his text Feudal and Modern Japan (1896) Historian Arthur May Knapp wrote:

"The samurai of thirty years ago had behind him a thousand years of training in the law of honor, obedience, duty, and self-sacrifice..... It was not needed to create or establish them. As a child he had but to be instructed, as indeed he was from his earliest years, in the etiquette of self-immolation. The fine instinct of honor demanding it was in the very blood..."

Tarot Star

With Aquarius as its ruling sign, The Star is a card that looks to the future. It does not predict any immediate or powerful change, but it does predict hope and healing. This card suggests clarity of vision, spiritual insight. And, most importantly, that unexpected help will be coming, with water to quench the Querent's thirst, with a guiding light to the future.

The Star is one of those cards everyone loves. In every deck, it is usually the most beautiful. It suggests the peace and harmony of its meaning. There is nothing negative about this card, but I think there is a trick to it. Whatever hope, healing, or future it offers, the reader must remember that it might not be immediate. This is a soft card, and like Aquarius, its vision is for tomorrow, not today. That's not to say that it offers no concrete benefits; it is a card that predicts unexpected help, but that help is only the first step. The star only reveals the future. It is up to the Querent to find his way to that future.

Yes, I was watching some old episodes of Firefly while working on this one. That’s why she may look familiar.

Well, I haven’t done a movie quotes quiz in a LONG while.

Here are some from the cream of the crop from my all time favorite movies.

Should I offer a prize to whoever can guess the most WITHOUT using the interwebs for help?

On your marks, get set….....

Go:

1. “Come on at me, if you want, Hash-head. I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up against the lot of you.”

2. “You know, that's good, because if you actually were as innocent as you pretend to be, we'd never get anywhere.”

3. “The Living Dead and the dying living are all the same. Cut from the same cloth. But disposing of dead people is a public service, whereas you're in all sorts of trouble if you kill someone while they're still alive.”

4. “So let me see, you said, um, you said that I should never take advice from someone that I haven't had sex with, right... right?”

5. “Okay, James, I wish you hadn't shot my girlfriend's dog. Even though Poe and I weren't exactly what you'd call simpatico, that's no reason he should've taken two in the chest.”

6. “Harry, let's face it. And I'm not being funny. I mean no disrespect, but you're a cunt. You're a cunt now, and you've always been a cunt. And the only thing that's going to change is that you're going to be an even bigger cunt. Maybe have some more cunt kids.”

7. “It's the librarian fantasy, man. Glasses off, hair down, books flying.”

8. “Thanks for coming, please stay for the end credits, if you're wondering who the best boy is, it's somebody's nephew, um, don't forget to validate your parking, and to all you good people in the Midwest, sorry we said fuck so much.”

9. “I think if God is dead he laughed himself to death. Because, you see, we live in ....Eden..... Genesis has got it all wrong. We never left the Garden. Look about you. This is paradise. It's hard to find, I, I'll grant you, but it is here. Under our feet, beneath the surface, all around us is everything we want. The earth is shining under the soot. We are all fools.”

10. “Well you figure, you sleep one-third of your life, that knocks out eight years of marriage right there. So you're, y'know, down to 16 in change. You know you're just a teenager, at marriage, you can drive it but there's still the occasional accident.”

11. “How the fuck do you always have like two good-looking girls who want you? You're the most hideous fucking chud I've ever met, and you always have a pair of girls fighting over you.”

12. “In 22 seconds, I could break your fucking spine. In 22 seconds, I could pinch your head off like a fucking insect and spin it all over the fucking pavement. In 22 seconds, I could put 22 bullets inside your ridiculous gut. What I seem unable to do in 22 seconds is to keep you from ruining my film!”

13. Once - I forget where I was. ..Central America.., maybe. Somewhere hot. Stupid job, bad pay, dangerous location, and water so foul the natives wouldn't even piss in it - this crowd of drunken motherfuckers hired by the local drug cartel showed up at my hotel room and threatened to tear me limb from limb. And I say, "Listen hombres, OK, you got me outnumbered here four to one and you're gonna kill me here tonight and not a soul in this dimly lit world is gonna notice I'm gone. But one of you, one of you, one of you is gonna have his eye torn out. Period." Silence. "I repeat myself: One of you poor, underpaid jerks is gonna have an eye ripped out of its socket. I promise. It's a small thing perhaps, all things considered, but I will succeed, because it's the only thing I have left to do in this world. So why don't you just take a good look at one another one last time, and think it over a few minutes more."

14. “That's not gross! Shit, gross is when you go to kiss your grandpa good night and he sticks his tongue down your throat. That's gross! Anyway, he's got one that's about 8 inches long and pink, and its got these little crinkles in it, and its got this grinder that makes it go in and out...”

15. “Nothing. The only way to find out what story you're in is to determine what stories you're not in. Odd as it may seem, I've just ruled out half of Greek literature, seven fairy tales, ten Chinese fables, and determined conclusively that you are not King Hamlet, Scout Finch, Miss Marple, Frankenstein's Monster, or a golem. Hmm? Aren't you relieved to know you're not a golem?”

16. “This was Josef Stalin. He was a communist, I was not too crazy about him, had a bad mustache, lot of bad habits. This is Bela Lugosi. he was, he was the mayor of ....New York city.... for a while, you can see what it did to him there, you know. This is, uhm, this is, uh, Charles DeGaulle, he, he was a very famous French chef, had his own television show, showed you how to make souflets and omelettes and everything.”

17. “The other kids are shooting at me, mom, and I wanna come home.”

18. “Oh come off it, MAJOR. You put me right off my fresh fried lobster, do you realize that? I'm now going to go back to my bed, I'm going to put away the best part of a bottle of scotch... And under normal circumstances, you being normally what I would call a very attractive woman, I would have invited you back to share my little bed with me you might possibly have come. But you really put me off. I mean you... You're what we call a regular army clown.”

19. “What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

20. “Jane, did you compare the percentage of teenage male Rex Manning fans to the incidence of homosexuality amongst teenage males?”
