There has been a rash of new Phishing attempts on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Ning networks. Cybercriminals follow popular trends. Wherever There’s A Crowd….There’s Money

One of the three schemes that have suddenly appeared on Twitter, appears to have begun last Thursday with the creation of a few bogus accounts utilizing the age-old lure of “Hot Women”. The trick went like this; You look up and see some young gorgeous women is now following you…hmmm You take a look at her profile and click on her web link to find out more (hopefully pictures).

The web address takes you to a fake Twitter site where you’re prompted to enter your password. Once you’ve fallen for the trap, you’re passed back to the real Twitter and surprise, surprise…you have even more “Hot Women” following you. Once they have you in the loop, it seems all these women’s web links take you to X-rated “dating” sites. Where the scammers get paid (pay-per-click) for providing traffic.

These Phishing attempts have proliferated in social networking sites based on the age-old sucker lures of vanity, greed, and curiosity. The reason they’re going after your account is to maximize their hook, utilizing the creditability of your name or Brand. A person may not trust the subject line, they may not trust the URL, but they trust YOU!

If they receive a message from you saying “there is this funny blog going around”….naturally your friends want to be in on the joke. Once again after you click on the link, you’re asked for your password. Never enter your password behind following a link. Open a new browser and access the page from your account….if they ask for a password again, it’s a fake!

Always double check URL’s before entering confidential information (name, address, etc.). In the case above the URL was www.tvviter.com (notice the double “v” and single “t”). This is a common trick amongst cybercriminals. The IRS, Banks, and Network administrators will never ask you for confidential information over an unsecured webpage. Always look for the “Lock Icon” to indicate that the webpage is using standard encryption security or SSL (see www.ssl.com).

Often the URL/link is shortened by URL compression services like ur.lc. Obfuscated URL’s are becoming the tool of choice for cybercriminals. Shortened URL’s are the norm on micro blogging sites like Twitter. You should consider using browser plug-in’s like Longurl.com (www.longurl.com) as a way to see the true destination of shortened URLs. Twitter and others should consider not counting URLs as part of the 140 character limitation. This would make links safer.

I recommend the following steps if your account has been hacked by a Phisher

1. Notify the network (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) immediately

2. Change your password immediately. And if you have used that password for other sites, change those too.

3. Protect your friends by deleting phishing or spam messages from your Twitter feed, Facebook Wall or wherever they were posted or by warning them not to click on URLs in a scam email seemingly from you.

4. Run an antivirus scanner, especially if you have a Windows PC. There are many free ones, including from Symantec and Microsoft.

As a veteran, I encourage each, and ever one of you, to take a minute this Memorial Day weekend to recognize, and remember the members of your "OWN" family that have served this great country. Remember Black history is a never-ending celebration of the accomplishments of the living...as well as the past. We the decedents of American slaves must never forget the contributions and struggles of our forefathers.

Due to the mis-education of Blacks in America, many do not know that the first memorial day observance was held by liberated slaves at the historic race track in Charleston NC, in 1865. The race track, which was used as a Confederate prison during the war, was the site of a mass grave for Union soldiers who had died while captive. A parade with thousands of freed blacks and Union soldiers was followed by patriotic singing and a picnic (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day).

Even though, we find ourselves once again trapped in an unpopular war, and many of us want to reject the current media hype to Support Our Troops; like you can't disagree with the war in Iraq and still support the selfless efforts of our sons and daughters. I'm asking that you take a moment to remember uncle Jack, grandpa Jett, and our proud forefathers, that did their duty and paid for it with their lives. Gather your family together and ask your elders...What did they do in the military? You might be surprised by the living history you will learn.

Blacks in America, have been on the front lines of every war, ever fought in this country's name. If you take the time to ask, you will find that someone in your family, died in a foreign land serving his or her country. Personally, I can trace my family's military history, from the civil war grave sites in Louisiana, to my mothers favorite cousin, who's name is etched on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. From the Revolutionary War to the deserts of Iraq, Black folk have sacrificed their lives for this country. Do not hate the player... hate the game (War)!!!

As I wrote in the opening of my historical review of the Black servicemen in the Korean War, "Glory Honor & Lies" (see http://www.citylightssoftware.com/reporter801.html);

Glory can be found in the eyes of children as they listen to the stories of old men recounting battles of the past. Honor can be found in the recognition of a grateful nation for the extra ordinary sacrifices of every-day men and women to duty and country. Lies can be found in official reports intended to reinforce stereotypes and prejudices that deny the accomplishments of those who have earned Glory and Honor.

African immigrants like US Blacks, are an untapped niche market within the US population. US African Chamber of Commerce estimates the buying power of African immigrants to be $50 billion dollars in annual consumer spending.

A new first-of-its-kind study undertaken by New American Dimensions and commissioned by the US African Chamber of Commerce (USACC) found this market to be underserved and completely mis-understood (see http://www.99clients.com/USACC/African_Immigrant_Presentation(2).pdf).

The 1.4 million African-immigrant market has been growing steadily in the United States. With this in mind the USACC commissioned this study to identify their consumption of goods and services in hopes of helping marketers understand the consumer attitudes, and buying habits of the African-immigrant market.

As expected a overwhelming majority of African-immigrants (87%) place high importance on staying connected with family and friends in their native country. This data is validated by their high use and ownership of electronic and communication devices such as computers (85%), cell phones (96%), and Internet access (73%),

When it comes to consumer purchases, most respondents cite word of mouth as a favorite influence in purchasing, demonstrating strong trust in friends and family. Other influences include Advertising (mainly TV and Print), Pricing, and Brand loyalty. Most like to purchase in person, instead of online, so they can see, touch, and examine what they’re buying.

African immigrant shoppers are prone to hunting around for the right price and the right product. More than one-third will generally choose the brand with the lowest price: Supermarkets are the most- patronized stores among this demographic group, while discount stores and low-end department stores are the top shopping venues for clothes and accessories. 58% of African immigrants prefer African food compared to food from other cultures. 46% buy products that agree with their religion.

The study found that media consumption in the African immigrant market basically surrounds their desire to stay informed and culturally aware of their homeland. African immigrants spend more hours watching English language media than African language media. CNN tops the list of favorite English-language TV channels followed by ABC, Fox and NBC. The majority of respondents believe Africans are usually portrayed negatively in the US media.

Respondents want to see positive images and stories about their home countries. Many point out that poverty, AIDs, and fighting monopolize press and fictional depictions of Africa. They want the media to show real people who are happyt and content, don’t focus on the jungles or tribal activity and avoid Coming-To-America stereotypes.

Among African immigrants, those in younger demographics are the heaviest visitors to internet social groups. Yahoo and Facebook are the most favored websites. 72% of respondents use email and instant messaging (IM). The favorite African language websites named in the study where Hiram.com, and African News.com,

In terms of aspirations, African immigrants most often describe “success” in big-picture, far-reaching terms. Most respondents emphasize the need to give back to their community, and most send money to relatives back home on a regular basis. According to David Morse, president and CEO of New American Dimensions. “This is a segment with a powerful sense of identity and pride in being African.” These consumers possess very high educational attainment and incomes

About the research: The study was conducted by New American Dimensions in conjunction with The African Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Bruce Corrie, The Minneapolis Foundation and Aguilar Productions. Findings are the result of focus groups in Los Angeles, New York City and Minneapolis and a four-market quantitative survey of 393 African immigrant adults in California, Minnesota, Washington, DC and New York. The study is supplemented by a video snapshot of Africans to personify the findings from the research and bring them to life.

Should We Save Black Radio?

Funerals are funny things, sometimes. Never mind that the dearly departed cheated on his wife, borrowed a small fortune of unpaid loans from friends and habitually kicked his neighbor's dog, according to the pastor during the eulogy, the man was a saint.

I thought about that scenario when I heard folks mourning over the impending doom of black radio.

Radio One's owner Cathy Hughes was on the Tom Joyner Show this morning begging for a black community bailout of black radio because of a proposed bill by Rep. John Conyers that would make radio stations have to shell out some major dollars to stay on the air. The best part is when she mentioned that Conyers turned on his boom box during a meeting with radio execs, drowning out their whining.

She considered it an an insult. I call it karma.

For years, members of the African American community have begged "urban" radio stations to be more responsive to the needs of the community, especially highly impressionable black youth. Unfortunately, our cries have largely fallen on deaf ears. Seems that profit before people has been the order of the day.

The politicians are selling the proposed legislation, HR Bill 848, (the Performance Tax) as a way to put more money in the pockets of musicians who were forced to work at Mickey Dee's after their short careers were over but the radio folks are saying that it is a conspiracy to not only silence black voices but to prevent us from ever hearing good black music ever again.

Let's be honest. For many of us, black radio died a long time ago. We aren't producing any more Marvin Gayes and Stevie Wonders. What passes today as classic Soul music is Jamie Fox's "Blame it on the Alcohol." It's not that the black community is not full of talented, would be musicians singing and rapping on street corners in every hood but black radio is too busy playing Soulja Boy every five minutes to give aspiring artists a fighting chance.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the strong legacy of black radio stations, as the companies were instrumental in not only giving us the latest hits but giving the community critical, need to know info during the 60's and 70's. Ms. Hughes should be especially honored for her innovative approach to black talk radio with WOL in Washington DC.

But this ain't the early 80's and the days of radio hosts like Petey Green have long been replaced by the Lil Waynes of the world.

I find it very disappointing that while the Right wing media moguls are up in arms over the FCC's new diversity committee that could possibly break their vice grip on the air waves, black folks are concerned about whether or not they can get their hourly Beyonce fix.

As my grim faced college professor once told me when I ecstatically told him that I had scored an internship at the local station that would allow me to gangsta-rize the airwaves back in the late 80's...."What our people need is information."

In all fairness. There are a few black radio talk shows in major cities and the syndicated guys do devote ten minutes or so every day with serious dialogue but these efforts are quickly negated by mind dulling music and slap stick comedy.

I must admit that when I heard Ms. Hughes' impassioned call to arms, this morning I was caught up in the moment as she, convincingly, warned that the end of black radio would totally devastate the African American community . I was just getting ready to grab my protest sign and bullhorn before reality set in.

If Fox News' top dog, Rupert Murdoch decided to start a new network of stations to target the urban consumer, would our children know the difference? Or would they even care as long as they could still hear T-Payne?

I didn't see too many of our people boycotting BET when it was bought up by Viacom. As long as they played the same gangsta videos and kept Comic View, life went on.

See, the execs are expecting the black community to exhibit a degree of cultural consciousness that has not been cultivated by black radio. You can't just push a button and expect the people who you have dumbed down for the last decade to automatically become Afro-centric scholars....Just doesn't work that way.

What the radio folks have never realized is that we are all in this together and an enlightened community benefits all its members. If black radio had been fulfilling its duty of raising the consciousness of the African American community no one would have dared to even suggest a bill that would cut off their flow of information or good music.

So, do we fight against HR 848?

I say yes, especially since, as activists such as Davey D have pointed out, this could eventually effect the noncommercial stations that play progressive music. Also, the few black talk radio programs that we have are essential to our collective growth and development.

However, black radio must make a commitment to truly be the voice of the people. We must make Cathy Hughes and the rest of them sign a contract with black America that they will put the needs of the community first and foremost. They must immediately change their play lists and give artists with a positive message, both national and local a chance to be heard. They must also make sure that at least one hour a day is devoted to the dissemination of information. Also, they must set up community advisory boards that meet monthly to make sure that they stay down with the 'hood.

If this happens many of us will stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they fight the power.

If not, as the disgruntled airline pilot said as he saw a 747 plummet to the ground….Crash and Burn!

I've been advocating this for years (Google Jim Neusom with key words Wells Fargo, or Foreclosure)....Fight back! Federally bailed-out banks targeted Black homebuyer - Now Blacks are targeting them
 
The NAACP and others have filed separate class action lawsuits against many of the country's largest lenders. These lawsuits allege systematic, institutionalized racism in sub-prime home mortgage lending (see http://www.associatedcontent.com/user/278447/jim_neusom.html for details).
 
These banks are getting billions in bailout money… Now it’s time for these lenders to be held accountable for the devastation they have wrought on the Black community.  They may have passed President Obama’s stress test…but they have failed us.
 
According to the lawsuits, Black homeowners who received sub-prime mortgage loans from these lenders were more than 30 percent more likely to be issued a higher rate loan than Caucasian borrowers with the same qualifications. This is a violation of Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Acts, it is illegal to “Impose different terms or conditions on a loan” (such as different interest rates, points, or fees) based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or handicap.
 
Wells Fargo charged Blacks more than twice as much as whites for home loans. JP Morgan charged Blacks and Latinos more than twice that of whites. Citigroup, US Bancorp and Wachovia charged minorities one and a half times more. Blacks and Latinos were more than one and half times more likely than whites, to be denied a loan by the top banks that received a taxpayer bailout.

A 2002 study by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) cited in the lawsuits demonstrate that these lending disparities are pervasive (see http://www.huduser.org/publications/fairhsg/unequal.html). The National Community Reinvestment Coalition’s most recent study finds that discrimination against minorities still persists in mortgage lending (see Income is no Shield Against Racial Differences in Lending 07/2007). The Federal Reserve Board, the FDIC have all made similar observations.

Ken Smikle, Founder and Publisher of Target Market News, the number one online authority on the Black consumer market reports that Wal-Mart spent a record $8 Billion dollars with minority and women owned suppliers (see http://www.targetmarketnews.com/storyid04280901.htm)

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. expanded its business with minority- and women-owned companies by more than 25 percent in 2008, according to recently verified figures. In the midst of a struggling economy, where businesses across the country have been forced to close or drastically reduce capacity and workforce, Wal-Mart increased its combined direct and second tier spend to more than $8.1 billion with minority- and women-owned businesses.

In 2008, Wal-Mart's direct spend with minority- and women-owned businesses was more than $6 billion, with second-tier spending totaling more than $2 billion. Second-tier spend is an accounting of suppliers that subcontract with prime suppliers on Wal-Mart business. Wal-Mart's spend numbers are verified by CVM Solutions, a third-party enterprise supplier management company. Wal-Mart's direct spend with diverse suppliers was more than $4.8 billion in 2007, totaling more than $6 billion when accounting for second-tier spend. The nearly $2 billion overall increase in the 2008 total is a reflection of the company's commitment to diversity, its customers and local communities.

"At Wal-Mart, we know we can make a difference in the communities we serve and our commitment extends to minority- and women-owned businesses at the local level," said Theresa Barrera, vice president of Supplier Diversity at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. "We are proud of the fact that, in these difficult financial times, we are able to deepen our commitment to these important partners -- giving them the potential to grow, while enabling Wal-Mart to deliver and sell the goods and services our customers want."

Wal-Mart began its supplier diversity program in 1994. Through its mission, Wal-Mart's supplier diversity team partners with businesses of all sizes, industries and areas of the country. (For examples of suppliers in your area, please see Appendix A or visit http://www.walmartstores.com)

As part of its efforts to stay connected to the best and brightest diverse suppliers, Wal-Mart partners with the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and several other organizations across the country, to identify potential partners.

"Wal-Mart has been an important partner, supporting our programs and initiatives, as well as continuously creating new ways for outstanding women-owned businesses to sell their products and services through Wal-Mart -- sometimes starting in just one store and then growing to become a major vendor throughout the chain," said Linda J. Denny, president and CEO of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). "Wal-Mart's dedication to increased spending with women-led companies translates to growth, financial stability and increased employment in communities across the country."

In addition to the relationships Wal-Mart maintains with partner organizations, the company is also dedicated to investing in opportunities that assist the establishment and growth of minority- and women-owned businesses. For example:

-- Wal-Mart and Sam's Club have held supplier fairs, and other events, across the country, giving diverse suppliers the opportunity to meet with Walmart and Sam's Club buyers. -- Wal-Mart granted ten scholarships to the Tuck School of Business' Tuck Executive Program at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The Tuck School has two minority business programs that focus on strategic planning, financial control systems and internal growth strategies. Ten more sponsorships are planned for 2009. -- Wal-Mart is a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable, an organization dedicated to the success of minority- and women-owned businesses. The organization is comprised of public companies that spend more than $1 billion each with minority- and women-owned enterprises.

BlackPlanet.com is arguable the largest Black social networking site on the Net. Before the social networking craze kicked off on MySpace, BlackPlanet was essentially the BET of the Internet.

Signs You’re A Gold Digger?

1. She asks you to buy her something or borrow money early on in the relationship.
Unless you are fine with the idea of paying for your sex and the company of this woman, this is a red flag.

2. She wears a long weave down her back, cakes on the make-up and doesn’t have a job.
This is probably controversial for a lot of people, but we need to throw the political correctness in the trash if we are talking about saving you money, embarrassment and extended headaches. Trust me; if she has a long fake weave down her back, sans the job, you should be “extra suspicious” of her intentions. If you must, make sure you put these types under several stress tests to determine if they’re genuine or not.

3. She never offers to pay and only says thank you occasionally…as if she’s entitled to your spending.
A man should pay for the first date and a thank you is necessary. In terms of indentifying diggers, a thank you after a small dinner means more than her going down on you when you get her back to the crib. If after several dates she has never offered to pay for anything, you should be suspicious.

4. She only wants to go to expensive restaurants.
After impressing her on the first or second date, take her to a few inexpensive places like Red Lobster and see how she reacts. If she reacts unappreciative or complains, she is either a digger, or may be too high maintenance. Don’t be a punk or weak for the panties and call the digger back. If you do, you may as well hire a dime quality call girl which will save you some money and more than a few migraine headaches in the long run.


How To Tell If Your Man Is A Scrub

1. He is in “transition.”
Sistas hate to hear that dreaded word, which translates to unemployed. If a man says he’s in “transition” then he has no job and more than likely can’t name a profession, skill or trade that he’s practiced for more than 3 years, consecutively. If he is an able body and free of felony convictions, he should be working, end of story.

2. He has no means of transportation.
Ladies, if the man has no car, this is more than likely his excuse for not having a job! This will also excuse his need to borrow your whip while you’re out working. If your man is driving your car around town from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., then he’s probably putting it down in intimate afterhours. Suggestion: Detach, somebody out there can do it better, and he may just have a job and a car.

3. He has trouble explaining/verifying his living situation.
If you’ve been seeing a guy for more than 90 days and you have yet to be invited his place, you have a bonafide live-in ex situation. Run. Or, if your dude is squatting at various family members pads and can hardly remember where he last left his toothbrush and toiletries, not only is he a scrub, he’s a scrub with no direction. Run fast.

4. He has several children with several women.
If your dude has more than two kids with more than two women, this is a problem. No child is a mistake, but these kind of slip-ups should only happen once, MAYBE twice. Otherwise, he’s reckless with his seed and you’d be foolish to try and venture down a path of longevity with him. Furthermore, a man with children should NOT have the time to be at your house all day and night, and you should encourage him to be with his babies by any means necessary.

The Black Agenda Report (www.blackagendareport.com) has a good article on the decline of Black radio. Managing editor, Bruce Dixon points out how the corporatization of Black radio has silenced the voice of the Black community.

When the Tom Joyner Morning Show was pulled first from Chicago, and then from other markets early this month, Joyner counseled listeners that "...black radio will never be what it once was, and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it."

This message of powerlessness and permanent defeat, of resignation to someone else, owning and controlling the black conversation, may be all we can expect from Joyner and the rest of the black elite.

But is it the real answer? Does it even address the crucial question of how we might have and own, our own black civic conversation? Dixon goes on to say; Community and democracy demand a steady diet of news to fuel civic engagement and public conversation in the public interest.

As the Black Agenda Report, pointed out all of six years ago in 'Who Killed Black Radio News,” the owners of commercial black media have for a generation enforced a no-news policy, justifying it with the unsupportable claim that all black people want is to be entertained. "

The fact is that news is less profitable than 100% entertainment. PR firms and the celebrity industries provide their own “news” releases complete with commercial tie-ins, and already segmented to the age and income divided groups that marketers love. Black radio owners decided not to do news because corporate media has consciously decided not to recognize African Americans as a people or a polity with our own set of collective experience and political will.

In a media regime that lives and dies by advertising alone, black commercial radio will only recognize black communities as marketing contraptions, as audience segments whose ears and eyeballs it can deliver to sponsors. The owners and managers of commercial black radio and TV are not the least concerned about our past or future, our housing or health care crises, the black imprisonment rate or the digital divide or the education of our young or the dignified security of our elderly.

To them we are just a market, passive consumers to be sliced and diced according to marketing industry guidelines. A hip hop station, an oldies station, an easy listening urban station, a gospel station, all under the same ownership with no news on any of them, forever and ever, amen.

If this is what Joyner meant, and we think it was, when he described the current state of black commercial radio, he was right. Except the “forever' part. Except when he told fans '...there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.”

There has been a lot of talk lately about Torture…But the Black online Diaspora has been strangely quiet
 
You would think that my Pan-African, and Black nationalist friends, would be having a field day….smile
 
The issue is not whether or not waterboarding is torture. The issue is whether or not…government is above the law
 
Waterboarding has been illegal under “US Law” for over 100 years and international law for 50 years. Yet Bush and Cheney seemed to think that a few legal memos would outweigh decades of  legal precedent.  That with the stroke of a pen, they could authorize, what the world has demonized, in the name of national security.
 
If that wasn’t bad enough…now Cheney, Rumsfield, and others think they can justify their illegal actions by saying….Torture worked, it saved American lives.  I hear this all the time..the end justifies the means! Are we a nation of laws. or are our laws only a matter of convenience…to be used or discarded depending on who’s in power.
 
Cheney even had the nerve to demand that Obama release other secret memos showing actionable results…. Seeing that Bush’s own FBI director said in an interview last year that he wasn’t aware of a “SINGLE” planned terror attack on America that had been foiled by information obtained through torture…the memos Cheney’stalking about might end up like the WMD he claimed existed in Iraq
 
As Arianna Huffington wrote in the Huffington Post, This is a defining moment for America. The way we respond -- or fail to respond -- to the revelations about the Bush administration's use of torture will delineate -- for ourselves and for the world -- the kind of country we are.  Even Shepard Smith of Fox New’s, The Strategy Room, lost it in a table-slamming outburst, declaring; I don’t’ give a rat azz if it works…We are AMERICA! We do not fucking torture!"

(see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/30377283#30377283)  As Olbeman points out, not only was waterboarding, well established as an illegal act, but Bush and Cheney were warned in advance by the  FBI, Army, Marines, and Air Force, long before the administration made it legal in 2002  
 
Now people have gone to jail, careers have been ruined, and yet those that orcistrated and implemented the policy are being allowed to go scot free….
