Jonathan Cour [update]

[9.18.07]

Hey all,

Summer's over, I guess, and I hope that everyone has had a fun one. For me, it has been a summer full of changes and lots and lots of songwriting.

We kicked off the summer with some pretty major changes to our live show and lineup. As many of you know already, the live band is now a 3-piece with me on bass, Grant on lead guitar and keys, and Matt on drums.

The line-up really opens up the music to make room for the vocals while also giving Grant and Matt the ability to stretch out as musicians. As all the Grant fans out there have known for years, he's not just a great singer, he's a multi-instrumentalist who's amazing at every instrument he picks up -- whether it's guitar, keys, harmonica, etc. -- and a master with looping and other weird effects. He's even playing his guitar with a violin bow on a song or two. He's like the Edge and Jonny Greenwood all wrapped into one, with a touch of Jimmy Page.

I couldn't be more excited about the new lineup. I felt that my music needed a new arrangement and vibe, and as it developed, I wanted the live band to be able to match the sound that we've created. I think we've found just the right combo. For anyone who hasn't caught any of the latest shows, we've got a couple scheduled in St. Louis in October and will be soon announcing some further dates in Chicago, St. Louis, and elsewhere for November and December.

Writing and recording is really what we're up to right now though. In between shows, we're planning on heading back into the studio. Like the live show, the songs for the next record also have a different vibe than the first time around. Grant and I have been writing and recording together a lot during our down time, and I also hammered out a tune with Goran Kralj from The Gufs called "Hey Princess" that's been a centerpiece of our new live shows.

Through touring and working with new ideas and inspirations, I feel like I've grown so much as a songwriter and performer in the past year and a half, and have a better understanding of who I am and how I can express that through my writing. My last record was built from songs I wrote with and for an acoustic guitar in my bedroom; I had no influence from a band or live touring. Having now had those influences and experiences, the sound has naturally evolved. I hope you'll like it as much as we do.

To whet your appetite, we've thrown up a couple demos on my myspace page for you to enjoy -- a new track called "MacArthur Blvd." and a full electric version of "Everless" that I recorded as part of the sessions that produced my EP. Keep checking back, as we will be updating the sites with videos and pictures from the studio.

Finally, people always ask what the guys and I are listening to, so I thought I'd start listing some artists and songs. Below are some songs we're currently spinning... if you are looking for some new tunes, check them out!

• 'Halloween' by Matt Pond PA |
• 'Death Machine' by Fiction Plane |
• 'Lazy Eye' by Silversun Pickups |
• 'Hurricane' by Athlete |
• 'Don't Stop' by Brazilian Girls |
• 'Sea Legs' by The Shins |
• 'Red Eye' by The Album Leaf |

Take care and stay tuned -- I promise the updates won't take so long next time!

Hey Folks,

Hope everyone has enjoyed their summer and the HOT weather thus far... We have been hard at work on new material for the new record and are excited to bring the tunes to you live. After only a couple of live shows this summer, we've got 2 great shows this week in St. Louis. One is a more acoustic and intimate show being held at St. Louis' newest music venue; 'Old Rock House' on Thursday the 23rd. The show is a singer-songwriter/storytellers night. Each participating artist plays three sets of three songs and tells a story about each one of them. The night will be an intimate glimpse into the stories behind the songs you know and love!

We will also be playing the amazing LOT festival on Saturday the 25th. The LOT takes place 4pm-1am on the 25th right outside the Schlafly Tap Room downtown. The event is FREE, open to ALL AGES and there are a ton of
great bands playing throughout the day. Check the lineup and info at http://www.myspace.com/mstlthelot. The event is produced by our good friends at Metropolis St. Louis and they have been working hard all summer to make this an event not to miss. We look forward to delivering a handful of new tunes under the stars and we hope to see all your faces there as well!

See you all soon!

Ordinary People, Dreaming Blue and Shows, Shows, Shows!

Hello everyone-

I wanted to let everyone know, that we've got some great upcoming shows in April.  We'll be supporting the band Dada at the amazing Park West in Chicago and the Fine Line in Minneapolis on April 6th and 7th respectively.  The band I will then be returning to St. Louis on April 13th to play our favorite venue, the Pageant.

Also, I've been writing a ton of new songs and they're starting to make it into the live set.  I've put a few of these new songs up on the MySpace page.  One song, "Ordinary People," you may recognize from the live show.  I wrote this one in Malibu with a songwriter, friend of mine named Ted Bruner.  But believe me, there was nothing fancy about it as we sat in his van with guitars.  The truth is we wrote that song on the side of the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu looking at the water.  I had just gotten off a cross-country flight and had air travel on the brain.  Listen to the song and you'll understand.

The other tune, "Dreaming Blue," is just starting to get the live treatment.  I wrote this tune back in October in Atlanta with a songwriter named Johnny Andrews.  It's song about infidelity, guilt, & the reconciliation process.  Check it out!

I'll post more songs later this spring.  Until then, enjoy the beautiful weather and keep your eyes posted on the MySpace page and website for upcoming shows. We are adding them weekly.

Cheers,

JC

Snow, Songs, Ice and Shows!

Happy Valentines Day-

Hope everyone is enjoying their greeting card holiday! Here in St. Louis we've been hit by ice storms, snow, and blackouts. What a great start to the New Year! I used the ice storm topic as a song title during a recent songwriting trip to Atlanta. Look for this song soon on the MySpace page.

I also wanted to thank those of you who came out to the free show on Jan 4th at the Duck Room. It felt really great to give something back to those of you that have been so supportive throughout 2006. 2007 should be another great year. I'll be spending the majority of this winter writing and recording demos with the plans of returning to the studio to make another CD.

With regards to shows, we've slowed down a bit in February and March, but we're gearing up for return headlining engagements at the Cowboy Monkey in Champaign, IL and The Blue Note in Columbia, MO. We also have some support slots with Dada at the Park West in Chicago and the Fine Line in Minneapolis, as well as some cool college dates on the upcoming schedule. If you don't make the Mardi Gras trip to St. Louis and are in Columbia, MO this Saturday- come on out to The Blue Note where we will be playing an acoustic set with Carbon Leaf.

Keep your eyes posted on the MySpace page and website for upcoming shows. We are adding them weekly.

Take Care,

JC

in other news...

NEVER COME AROUND MAKES THE CUT-

The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) recently announced its finalists and semi-finalists. Jonathan Cour's song "Never Come Around" has been selected as a finalist in the AAA category. Winners will be named in mid-March. Never Come Around was chosen out of almost 15,000 entrants, making this a very cool accomplishment for Jonathan and the songs co-writer Ted Bruner.

[EVERLESS]

check out the new tune 'everless'...

i decided to record a 'stripped down' acoustic version of this song since we always get such a great reaction from the crowd when we play it live... i wrote this song with my good friend ted bruner the first time i went out to california last year... it's basically a snapshot of where my life was at that point. i had decided that this music thing was going to be my future; i was ready to leave everything else behind and had no intention of looking back.

so, feel free to leave any comments... hope you like it.

hey all...
i thought i'd update you with what's been going on in
the past month, as well as what we have planned for
the holiday season.

grant and i played a great show @ the house of blues
in new orleans w/ better than ezra.  it was my first
time in the big easy.  and i have to say, i was blown
away by the fact that you can just walk around the
streets with a beer in your hand!  my guitar tech (kevin) and
i definitely took advantage of this wonderful
privledge by purchasing two 60 oz. draft beers.  it
was my goal to finish mine before he was halfway
finished with his.....and i succeeded!!!  we were all
three sheets to the wind by the time we boarded the
plane.

i passed out before take off, and woke up in
st. louis with a pretty healthy hangover.

i also traveled to hotlanta, georgia to work with a
very talented songwriter by the name of Johnny
Andrews.  we wrote a tune called 'dreaming blue'
(title subject to change).  i'm hoping to record it
within the next couple weeks.

i've also been writing with st. louis' own, Thom
Donovan.  we've got three big shows scheduled with his
band, Lapush.  you can find these dates on the myspace
page or the website.

PRESALE INFO COMING SOON!!

see you @ the shows!

hey all,

i thought i'd start using these blogs more to help let people know what's going on with the jonathan cour enterprise.

my guitarist grant and i are currently in the studio working on some new material i've been writing. the recordings are gonna  be more stripped down acoustic versions of the songs. we are recording them how i write them; very little production and acoustic. we posted the first track we recorded this way on myspace last week. it's called 'ordinary people'. i wrote OP with a good friend of mine out california earlier this summer. we wrote it while sitting inside his van on the side of the Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu. we would love to know what you all think about it... leave some messages or comments and throw some feedback our way.

grant and i also just got back from playing a great show in Los Angeles last weekend at the Hotel Cafe. thanks to everyone who made it out to the show. it was a great introduction for us to the left coast. a funny thing happened on the flight out to Cali........ GRANT SHIT HIS PANTS!!! no joke...he had a tummy ache all morning and well, he left st. louis with underwear on and arrived in L. A. with none. the story of stripping down in a very small airplane bathroom is quite hilarious when he tells it. it's ok to  talk about this, because grant doesn't get embarrassed  by anything.

we posted some pics below from the trip to LA...enjoy!

anyway, that's enough rambling for now... until the  next time someone shits their pants.

keep it easy,
