October 9, 2009 - Friday
A longtime fan of Jon, Behnam Mehraie got the chance to interview Jon, and ask some great questions about his new release "Expressions"

Interview with Jon Secada, 10/7/2009 by Behnam Mehraie

Behnam: September and October have both been great months for Jon Secada, and I thought it is a good time to talk about Jon's new jazz album "Expressions", his wonderful duet with brazilian singer Marina Eliani, his appearance on Latin American Idol, plus the new release of Jim Brickman's album in which Jon performs a few classics.  Also, a chance to update everyone on his upcoming music projects..

Behnam: Happy Birthday Jon! How are you doing these days and how was the birthday party?
Jon : I'm doing great Behnam, thank you for asking...My birthday celebration was great. I was able to come home for the weekend from ........Argentina........ and spend it with the family...

B: I believe September was a very busy and successful month for you, right?
J: September was the beginning of what will be a really busy rest of the year between the release of "Expressions", the release of the live dvd I did in ........Brazil........, and Latin American Idol...

B: Congratulations for the new jazz album "Expressions". It's great to see that the album has just ranked at #39 in Billboard’s Jazz category and was also in the top 10 at Amazon.com.  Many fans believe that this should be a Grammy award winning album for you. How do you feel about the success so far with “Expressions”?
J: I'm very proud to finally have had the opportunity to realize the release of this project...my jazz background has always meant a lot to my career as a musician.

B: Would you ever think that your fans would love a jazz album from you?
J: I have the best fans any artist in my position could ever hope for. They have always embraced all the different directions that I've taken in my career

B: We all know that you have Masters in Jazz from the ........university.... of ....Miami........, and doing this album was something that you always wanted to do. Why have you named this album "Expressions"?
J: The title is a reflection of what doing this project meant to me: the ultimate form of "expression"

B: I remember in 2004 this album was going to be released with Joel Someillan.  Why did it take 4 years to release such a beautiful album?
J: I was waiting for the right avenue and company to release it with, and I found that in the relationship I have with the Orchard.

B: Let's talk about the songs in more depth that are on “Expressions”.  This album is a combination of classic songs, (including a few from your previous releases), and new material written by you.  Was it challenging to create Jazz versions of your all time favorites, "Just Another Day" and "Angel"?
J: It was as challenging as it was fun to create a musical reinvention of those songs. That's a part of the freedom of jazz music that gave us the artistic license to do so.

B: In my interview with you 2 years ago you mentioned that "Wishes" was the first song that you wrote.  The song and your voice are wonderful. Tell us more about this song and how do you feel now that your first composed song is finally released?
J: "Wishes" is a song that means a lot to me. To finally have the chance to record it, brings back a lot of wonderful memories from my college days.

B: It seems as of now, 2 tracks from “Expressions”, "Letter from my friend" and "When Night time falls" are favorites among the fans. (talk about these songs)
J: Both of these songs I co-wrote while I was in ........New York........ doing Grease. they're part of a number of songs that i wrote during that time, and all of them share really diverse and moods and stories.

B: Is the track "I Found a Reason" an English version of "Estoy Tranquilo" from "Amor”(1995)?
J: Good observation..yes

B: How difficult was it to create your own version of all time classic songs such as "What a wonderful world" ,"Chances are" and others?
J: Doing such recognizable classics is always a dangerous challenge. Our main objective was to give the songs a different identity attached to my performance of them in a jazz element.

B: One of the tracks in this CD, "I don't care much" was in the Broadway show “Cabaret” in which you stared in.  Are you planning to act in Broadway again?
J: If the opportunity arises with a show that I fit in, yes....

B: This is the first record released from your own company, Secada Productions. What are the goals and the future plans of this record label?
J: Being an independent entity gives me the freedom to pick and choose what to work on next without the pressure of any set deadlines. there are several projects that i'm looking into that will come to light in the next couple of years.

B: I think Secada Productions used simple but effective ways to promote "Expressions" and worked out very well. Using the social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and YouTube are great. You now have more than 540,000 followers in Twitter! This is awesome and congrats!  How do you like connecting directly with the fans utilizing these sites?
J: I love it!! It's direct and intimate all at the same time...and needless to say, it's rapidly becoming the wave of the future for artist to promote and market their music.

B: How was your one week performance in ........New York........ at Fiensteins? All the fans retuned excellent feedback to me.
J: It was amazing. i'm already looking to go back next summer.

B: Now after the release and success of this album, would you like to record another album in the jazz genre or are you still focusing on your pop/Latin career?
J: I'm sure I'll get a chance to do another jazz influenced project, but my next cd will most probably be a Spanish pop record...

B: One of your loyal fans always says "Give Jon a phone book to sing and I will enjoy listing to it". It’s  great that you have such a talent to perform anything, and your fans  support you 110%. Would you like to try any other genre in your career?
J: My career is defined by the fusion of all the different styles that have influenced me and keep influencing me...

B: In September, the Jim Brickman and friends CD and DVD got released which includes a few performances done by you .  I loved watching you live on that night. You told me backstage that this was a new experience for you. Tell us about it.
J: Working with Jim was what made that performance special. Also, it's the different artist that he brings together that creates the magic of the performance.

B: Your beautiful duet with Marina Eliani on the song "Lost Inside your heart" is amazing. This song has all it needs to become a great hit.   I can't stop listening to it! Were you involved in composing this song?, and how was it working with such a young talented singer who also has a wonderful voice as well.
J: ........Marina........ is a great artist with a beautiful instrument. I wrote that song as a duet and got the perfect partner in ........Marina.........

B: You have been busy with the 4th season of Latin American Idol, and it’s great that you are still involved in it as one of the original judges. How do you judge the singers who perform your own songs?
J: That always sets up an interesting situation...while I'm flattered that they choose my songs to audition with, if they don't do it justice i have to be honest and tell them the truth of what I feel...

B: When you are traveling extensively, how do you keep a strong relationship with your wife Mari and your 2 children while you are away?
J: It's all about the sacrifice and the commitment to communicate.

B: What are your plans for the future of your children? Would you want them to follow your footsteps in the music/entertainment industry?
J: If they want to follow my footsteps and would like my help, they know I'm there for them. Up to now they haven't shown an interest for show business yet.

B: When are we expecting the release of your new DVD "Best of Jon Secada-Live in ....Rio...."?
J: It should be out at the end of this month

B: Any plans for promoting this DVD?
J: Most definitely....

B: Thanks a lot for your time Jon. Is there anything special you want to mention specially about "Expressions"?
J: "Expressions" is truly an unfulfilled dream come true that finally came to light. Thank you Behnam for everything you do and to all my fans for the support that i keep on receiving....Love you all!!!
