I didn't really watch the video, but this is my favorite Ani Difranco song of all time and perhaps the song that sings me.

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

tonight on NPR i heard that 2008 actually gets an extra second because human time and the time calculated by the sun is approximately off by a second.

amazing that this year will last a second longer than the rest in my life. i wonder will that second make a significant difference in my little existence somehow?

ps-i got bangs today, and they are super cute!

a great example of what i was trying to say with the Jungian references. this song found me in the worst of times and transcended me from my own worry and loss.

Ani Difranco's Present/Infant

lately i've been glaring into mirrors
picking myself apart
you'd think at my age i'd of thought
of something better to do
than making insecurity into a full-time job
making insecurity into art
and i fear my life will be over
and i will have never lived unfettered
always glaring into mirrors
mad i don't look better

but now here is this tiny baby
and they say she looks just like me
and she is smiling at me
with that present infant glee
and yes i will defend
to the ends of the earth
her perfect right to be

so i'm beginning to see some problems
with the ongoing work of my mind
and i've got myself a new mantra
it says: "don't forget to have a good time"
don't let the sellers of stuff power enough
to rob you of your grace
love is all over the place

there's nothing wrong with your face
love is all over the place
there's nothing wrong with your face

lately i've been glaring into mirrors
picking myself apart

Current mood:  contemplative

The symbols that influence many vary in their purpose. Some men need to be aroused, + experience their initiation in the violence of a Dionsyiac "thunder rite." Others need to be subdued, and they are brought to the submission in the ordered design of temple precinct or sacred cave, suggestive of the Apollonian religion of later Greece.

A full initiation embraces both themes, as we can see when we look either at the material drawn from ancient texts or or at living subjects.

But it is quite certain that the fundamental goal of initiation lies in the taming of the original Trickster-like wildness of the juvenile nature. It therefore has a civilizing or spiritualizing purpose, in spite of the violence of the rites that are required to set this process in motion.

There is, however, another kind of symbolism, belonging to the earliest known sacred traditions, that is also connected with the periods of transition in a person's life.

But these symbols do not seek to integrate the initiate with any religious doctrine or secular group-conciousness. On the contrary, they point to man's need for liberation from any state of being that is too immature, too fixed or final.

In other words, they concern man's release from-or transcendence of--any confining pattern of existence, as he moves toward a superior or more mature stage in his development.

A child, as I have said, possesses a sense of completeness, but only before the initial emergence of his ego-conciousness. In the case of an adult, a sense of completeness is achieved through a union of the conciousness with the unconcious contents of the mind.

Out of this union arises what Jung called "transcendent function of the psyche," by which man can achieve his highest goal: the full realization of the potential of his individual self.

-Jung, 'Man + His Symbols' pg. 146

Current mood:  blustery

here's a little rant for all you republicans, Obama haters and other misguided political believers.

first off, if you voted for george w. bush you should be damned ashamed of yourself. we (the american people who didn't vote for a monster) can thank you for the new millenia's version of the great depression and a cluster-fuck of a war that has lined the pockets of rich oil-mongers, while the rest of us have paid through the nose for gas.

keep your morality out of our politics. i don't give a shit if you believe homosexuals deserve the same rights as you breeders. i don't care if you are pro-life or pro-choice, its not about christians and jews, muslims or buddhists, it is about food. it is about paying our debt to the global economy. developing new technology, manufacturing new commodities and providing jobs for our country's citizenry.

do you want to starve? prostitute yourself or have our great nation be the economic laughing stock for the next fifty years? well then, get off your butt and vote for Obama.

it doesn't matter if the world is or isn't coming to an end, because if we don't fix our economy and our foreign policies then we are fucked anyways. can you say civil war?

mccain is an old fucktard. he has supported the bush administration and the oil corporations since the first gulf war. he is a political nightmare and cannot control his temper.

you vote for mccain, you vote for war.

hence you are a bastard.

more to be continued....
