Welcome to another edition of Just Mike's music blogs, an annual tradition of reviewing the year that was in the music scene. I suck at actually reviewing things, so it will mainly just be reccomendations with brief descriptions. First off lets have a look at the albums I have 'spun' this year.

Muse - The Resistance
The Used - Artwork
Austrian Death Machine - Double Brutal

Now down to the nitty gritty

Top 5 Albums of 2009
5. Sugar Army - The Parralels Amongst Ourselves
The debut album from the Perth quartet, the first of 3 Perth bands making the top 5 this year. A reccommended listen for everyone, Sugar Army have a sound that would appeal to most people.

Listen to: Parallels, Tongues In Cheeks, Maybe The Boy Who Cried Wolf Was Just Paranoid, That's A Damn Fine Cliché

4. Pearl Jam - Backspacer
Was actually worried I'd hate this album after first hearing 'Got Some' performed live on Conan and it sounded horrible (love the song now, just sounded horrible on tv), and first single 'The Fixer' not ranking highly with myself, but thank fuck 'The Fixer' turned out to be the shittest song on the album. PJ deliver yet another hard hitting album, following the footsteps of the previous self titled effort, and finally delivering hope to the Pearl Jam community that the days of 'Riot Act' are long in the past (hell I love Riot Act, but there are some strange songs on there).

Listen to: Gonna See My Friend, Unthought Known, Speed Of Sound, Amongst The Waves

3. Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
I only just recently got into Alice In Chains (yet another awesome recomondation from Karl), and while at first I wasn't hugely into them, after listening to this album it made me listen to AiC alooooot and I am in love with this band. The first album from AiC in 14 years, and first without frontman Layne Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. New lead vocalist William DuVall however brings to the band a scarily similar voice to that of Staley, and gives the album the destinctive AiC sound. Yet again lead guitarist co-lead vocalist/back up vocalist Jerry Cantrell fucking blows everyone away with his heavy riffs, amazing voice and brilliant song writing. Black Gives Way To Blue is heavy as fuck, and prooves AiC havn't missed a beat, even with a 14 year hiatus.

Listen to: Check My Brain, Your Decision, A Looking View, Acid Bubble

2. Karnivool - Sound Awake
Karnivool take forever to release albums, but when they release master pieces like this all can be forgiven. Following the debut album 'Themata', it was going to take a massive effort to even come close to topping it, and while it doesn't quite stand up to Themata, Sound Awake is still an incredible album, worthy of the number 2 spot for 2009. I even dare use the dreaded 'epic' word, but this album delivers epic guitar riffs, topped off with insane bass lines from Mr Stockman that blow me away. The first of the 'big 3' Australian alt rock bands to release an amazing 2nd album (Cog - Sharing Space and The Butterfly Effect - Imago were good albums, but failed in comparision to their first albums).

Listen to: Simple Boy, Set Fire To The Hive, All I Know, Deadman

1. Eleventh He Reaches London - Hollow Be My Name
And a collective sigh is heard throughout the world. Yes I know most of you hate this band, but you're all stupid. They're amazing, this album is amazing, everything about them is amazing, why don't you understand? This album is a journey, and a depressing one at that, but fuck I love it. Ian Lenton's lyrics are so interesting to read, and stick to a constant theme of Colonial Australia throughout the whole album. Easily the number 1 album on 2009, and we ALL wait with baited breath for the next release, hopefully this year :o

Listen to: All of it

Dishonourable mentions

Killswitch Engage - Self Titled.....again :S
Why any band would release 2 self titled albums I dont know, stupid. Self Titled number 2 delivers nothing new, am I am just reeeally bored of this band. Which is a surprise because once upon time they were the most entertaining band out there.

Muse - The Resistance
I think we all saw it coming. While there are a few good songs on the album (Uprising, Unnatural Selection, MK (Mortal Kombat) Ultra), the rest of the album is taking too far of a step out of the Muse boundries. Its not catchy, its boring, please bring back old Muse.

Songs of the Year

I'm only putting one Eleventh Song in the top 5 to be fair to other bands.

5. November 18th - Break Even
A heart wrenching, passionate tribute to the memory of Rowan. "To the world you were just a person, but to us, you were our world!"

4. Simple Boy - Karnivool
Just listen to the bass at the start, that alone is worthy of making the top 5.

3. Speed Of Sound - Pearl Jam (accoustic version not on album)
Gives me goosebumps every time. I love the album version, but the rest of the band
kind of takes away the passion the song has with just Eddie performing it (with perfect backing vocals from Matt Cameron).

2. Alice In Chains -Check My Brain
Holy Shit I love this song. This song is just so.....badass. It'll be a perfect song
for a 'heel' to enter to in wrestling. Or American Badass Undertaker. Such an insane riff. Stop destroying me Jerry Cantrell.

1. Eleventh He Reaches London - For The Commonwealth And The Queen
Perhaps the greatest song ever written. I'm sorry to be a fanboy, but this song is a journey, and it just doesn't stop delivering. No one will ever write a song as big as this, its not possible. This song is 11mins of Vorn and I wetting ourselves. [/fanboy]

Honourable mentions
- White Washed - August Burns Red
- I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, And Your Motorcycle - Austrian Death Machine
- Blood On My Hands - The Used (Pretty bad album but I love this song. Typical catchy The Used).

Albums from a previous year...that I fell in love with this year

5. The (International) Noise Conspiracy - Survival Sickness
4. Alice In Chains - Dirt
3. Brand New- The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
2. Pearl Jam - Binaural
1. Neil Young - Mirror Ball

Cutest band member of 2009

5. Dennis Lyxzén (The (International) Noise Conspiracy singer)
Purple velvet outfit <3
4. Nick Hipa (As I Lay Dying Guitarist)
For his performance on the As I Lay Dying DVD. I love this man.
3. Jordan Richardson (Ben Harper & Relentless 7 drummer)
Greatest facial expressions while playing ever. Words cannot describe.
2. Liam Finn
1. Mawds (Break Even)

Band seen most live

2. Lacey - 5
1. Eleventh He Reaches London - 6

Live band of the Year

5. Eleventh He Reaches London
On the rare occassion the venue can get the sound right, a sight to behold.

4. Ben Harper and the Relentless 7
Half the points go to the drummer, but Ben Harper has a wicked voice too I guess.

3. Liam Finn
He'll rock out on guitar, loop it, then continue to rock out on drums, so good.

2. The (International) Noise Conspiracy (Supporting Rise Against)
I obviously went to this show to see Rise Against, but had a small liking for this band beforehand so was eager to see these guys too. And fuck they blew me away. I have since purchased some of their albums, and while on CD they're good, its nothing compared to their live show. Dennis Lyxzén owns as a frontman, dancing very homosexualy around stage in his purple velvet ensemble.

1. Pearl Jam
Masters of the live show. Eddie Vedder's voice was spot on all night, Mike McCreedy running laps of the stage the whole of 'Whipping', Boom killing it on Love Reign Over Me, Eddie's run into the crowd during 'Alive', too many great moments to mention.

Most memerable live/crowd moments of 2009

5. Karnivool's crazy performance of Set Fire To The Hive.

4. For The Commonwealth and the Queen at Eleventh He Reaches London album launch.

3. Pearl Jam opening with Breakerfall, so amazing.

2. Dennis from International (Noise) Conspiracy owning Rise Against fan giving the band the finger.

1. Love Reign O'er Me by Pearl Jam in first encore, November 14th. Goosebumps galore.

Band to look out for in 2010

Project: Bad won first year, then Eleventh, then PB again, then Eleventh again, will the pattern continue? ............. NO. For shame Project: Bad :(

Winner......

LACEY

I want to keep it local, and Lacey deserve this place with impressive live sets throughout the year, and always dedicating 'looking for something' song to me, because I love it so much.

Album of the year

Below are some of the albums I have had on regular rotaion during 2008

Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal

Anberlin - New Surrender

The Buttefly Effect - Final Conversation of Kings

Cog - Sharing Space

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Dragonforce - Ultra Beatdown

Gyroscope - Breed Obsession

Flight Of The Conchords - S/T

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night

Metallica - Death Magnetic

The Music - Strength in Numbers

Opeth - Watershed

Rise Against - Appeal To Reason

Scars on Broadway - S/T

Shihad - Beautiful Machine

Slipknot - All Hope is Gone

And the top 5....

5. Flight Of The Conchords - Flight Of The Conchords
A comedy album making the top 5......hmmm yes it definately must've been a pretty average year for music in Just Mike's books. But hey, Flight of the Conchords make awesome, hilarious music.

4.  Rise Against - Appeal To Reason
First impressions had me sceptical, but eventually I grew on the album, despite actually hating a couple of songs on the album, a first for any Rise Against release I've listened to.

3.  Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal
As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis filling in on all band positions, accompanied by Arnie in an ultimate music tribute to the governator.....how could it not be good? The first single 'Get To The Choppa' is freakin insane, along with tracks like 'Screw You Benny' and 'Who Is Your Daddy and What Does He Do?'(with awesome breakdown) this is indeed, a totally brutal album.

2. The Music - Strength In Numbers
Unlucky to get the number 1 position, but yet another incredible release from The Music. Upon first listening to the album I was pretty dissapointed tbh, as the album takes on a very different, darker side to The Music's.....music (why did they call themselves that?), compared to their usual, pop rock dance style. But after a few listens I fell in love with this side of The Music, with tracks like 'Cold Blooded' and 'Drugs' sending shivers down my spine, and the instrumental hidden track 'No Danger' further prooving to me that if The Music released an album of just instrumentals, it would be sooooo amazing.

1. Opeth - Watershed.
To be honest, I had The Music lined up to take out album of the year, but totally forgot Watershed was released in 2008, and well, this album blew me away. I've always been a casual Opeth fan, but never really been able to listen to a whole album from start to finish. Watershed however changed that, with 7 killer tracks that had the skip button on my ipod collecting dust when listening to the album. A soothing intro with Coil, then out of nowhere your arse is kicked by the huge track Heir Apparent, and before you have a chance to breath The Lotus Eater comes to fuck you up with an amazing organ solo even Boom Gaspar would be jealous of. Fuck writing this makes me want to listen to this album yet again. Hessian Peel comes later in the album to yet again sooth your soul, but only for a few minutes until it kicks in and by now your brains are dripping out your ears after imploding on itself from insane awesomeness.

Honourable mentions: Metallica - Death Magnetic
After first hearing the album title, followed by the track names, many lol's were shared amongst friends, but my hats off the Metallica for drastically improving from their last, so called 'album'. Although taking a shit and recording it onto cd would sound better than St. Anger, Death Magnetic does deliver some awesome songs including Broken, Beat and Scarred, and The Unforgiven III.

Dishonourable mentions: The Butterfly Effect- Final Conversation Of Kings
Oh so dissapointing was Final Converstation of Kings. Listening to the first 2 tracks I was pumped, excited to hear some old glimpses from the Begins Here days, with 2 explosive tracks.....but then....failure. Track after track of boring, booooring songs, all the same song structure, terrible songs like 'The Window and The Watcher' which was the first single?!?! What? And while the first 2 songs are awesome.....they havn't released either of them to radio, stupid. Still a TBE fan, but this was a real kick to the teeth.

Songs of the Year: (released 2008)

5. Death And All His Friends - Coldplay
:O a Coldplay song??? I've never really been a huge Coldplay fan, but I actually quite enjoy their new album, and this song is just awesome.
4. Who Is Your Daddy, And What Does He Do? - Austrian Death Machine
One word, breakdown.
3. The Lotus Eater - Opeth
Perfectly described as 'fucked up' by Mikael Akerfeldt. Awesome riffage, amazing organ solos, listen to it.
2. Girt By Piss - Eleventh He Reaches London
Can this band stop being so fucking good, holy shit. Amazing lyrics, amazing song, amazing band.
1. No Danger (Hidden Track) - The Music
An incredible instrumental that really should've opened the album, but following tradition and ending with an instrumental is a The Music tradition (even though Too High wasn't an instrumental on the first album...it was close enough).

Honourable mentions:

- EPL(English Premier League) - Jon VDH

- Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody
Would've easily made top 5 if it wasn't so fucking over played. Ruined a great song.

Albums/EPs from a previous year...that I fell in love with this year

5. Comeback Kid - Broadcasting
4. Minus The Bear - Planet Of Ice
3. Comeback Kid - Wake The Dead
2. The Red Paintings - Feed The Wolf
1. Arcade Fire - Funeral

Cutest band member of 2008:

5. Dalls Green - City and Colour
4. Jim Ward - Sparta (on solo tour)
3. Everyone from Arcade Fire
2. Phil Jordan - The Music
1. Mikael Akerfeldt - Opeth

Live band of the Year

5. As I Lay Dying - Soundwave
4. Arcade Fire - BDO
3. Rage Against The Machine - BDO
2. Jim Ward - Soundwave
1. Opeth - Metro City

Most memerable live/crowd moments of 2005

5. Vorn, Pidge and I's screamo version of Run To The Hills during Trident Winter - Rocket Room
4. Luke eating shit in Parkway mosh while the rest of us laugh and point in comfort of V.I.P balcony
3. Jim Wards amazing performance of Collapse at Soundwave
2. RATM kicking into Bulls on Parade after sound failure during first song at BDO.
1. Mikael Akerfeldts Lol moments/All of Opeth in general

Eleventh He Reaches London.......AGAIN

Yes in keeping with the pattern (PB, EHRL, PB, EHRL) I have chosen EHRL again, BUT never have I been more certain of a band having a huge impact next year.
The new album (to be released early 2009) will actually kill people, thats how amazing it will be.

About a year and a half ago I downloaded a song off Kazaa, that song was Crave by The Butterfly Effect, thus began a new sense of musical taste for myself. Since then The Butterfly Effect have been my favourite band. I really wanted to see them tour, but it just so happened I got into them just after a tour in Perth, in which was very close to the end of their album tour. So Mike waited, preyed for them to come back to Perth, mainly for the fact that Vorn would keep going on about him seeing them live before and such, in his attempt to make me jealous....and succeed. So various TBE shows and tours would pass, Filling Silence tour....every state but WA, Phoenix tour....every state but WA. It wasnt untill one late Sunday night at the end of September would I get the news I was after. After waiting one year and a half, it was announced The Butterfly Effect would finally return to Perth, on the Bread and Circusses tour with another awesome Australian band (that I didn't like that much at the time) Cog. Tickets were purchased early, and my EFFECTED tshirt was layed out ready to go.

Pitstop Festival, 25th November, Pinjarra/Fairbridge

The first show was this past Friday in Pinjarra. A longer trip than expected saw us also picking up the bassist from Antistatic who had made a little 'Pitstop' of his own ha-ha (Vorns joke). Luckily Vorn spotted him broken down on his way back from Bunbury, so myself and Claire went and picked them up from....the end of the freeway or wherever it was. So yes, if it wasnt for us, there wouldve been no Antistatic at Pitstop, and if they didnt play there wouldve been some pretty pissed off 'punters' (you'll know why by the end of the Pinjarra chapter ;) ). So yeah we get to Pinjarra and deliver static bassist, and join the HUGE crowd of people. By huge I mean....20 or 30. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving were on, and I lost all interest when all their songs were ruined by horrible, unecessary screams. Some of their music wasnt bad, but the screams just ruined it all. The Flairz were next and well....yeah....theyre little kids, LOL funneh!!11 I mean really, they couldnt of been more lame. And they were so reading off a script between songs. Cute? No. suffered through their set untill Antistatic. This was Static show number 9 since August, yeow! Didnt fail to impress again, although Drew taunted the crowd which was a bad idea, and was pelted with stress balls most of the set, resulting in unplugging's of guitars and missed chords. Poor guy. Anyways the next bands were of no interest (The Fuzz and Red Jezebel) so that called for food/bouncy castle/sitting down time. Arriving back at the end of The Fuzz we got a good spot for TBE whom I had waited to see for over a year. Oh I also had made a TBE flag...

which I had out and people had spotted and praised and were saying how awesome I am, too true. Anyways it was getting really windy, and I was getting worried and knew something would happen to stop me from seeing TBE. But moments later, TBE were on stage, I was SEEING TBE LIVE. Opening with Phoenix is so awesome, such an awesome song. The crowd (of maybe 100 or so people) then got really into with One Second of Insanity and Always, too awesome for words. I think it was at the start of Perception Twin....actually maybe not...anyways at the start of one song Clint (TBE singer) saw my flag to which he smiled, noded, and did the whole fingers to heart/point to my direction. Such an awesome moment. TBE bassist had also seen in at the start and was hell happy about it. Back to Perception Twin (current favourite TBE song), in which Clint sings a line of the song TO ME. Not just any line, the line 'Im raped and molested, touched by you'. Fuck yeah. A few songs later they get to Take It Away, they go into the whole melody/cover song of sending out an S.O.S mix song thingy, when it gets hell windy. Next thing you know a pole falls from the roof of the stage, almost hitting Kurt (TBE guitarist). They continue playing anyway, but another huge gust of wind hits, at which point its thought to be too dangerous and TBE are sent off stage :o! Halfway through one of the best moments of my life...and its called off? Im front row centre...and it just ends? The whole festival was called off, so no Gyroscope or Cog either. So dissapointing, but atleast I got to see TBE and Cog the next 2 nights, and Gyroscope at Rock It.

TBE & Cog w/Behind Crimson Eyes @ Lookout, Scarborough

Take 2 at seeing a FULL TBE set. Behind Crimson Eyes opened, and well, they're a hardcore band, enough said. They got owned by the PA during first 2 songs, so not as much screamo at the start, but it picked up towards the end. Myself and Karl tried to get front for TBE, but there were too many assholes at the front. I had a 7 foot guy in front of me, and there were 2 fucking annoying wogs who wouldve never heard of TBE and most probably listen to RNB at the front, costing us out front positions. Them aside the crowd was awesome. HUUUGE pop for TBE, sooo good. Again I must say Phoenix is such an awesome opener. Same setlist as Newport (which Ill post below) and just pure ownage. Clint also got a cheap pop for mentioning Karnivool (vool are so popular here) and possibly touring here with them for the album release (fucking yay). Also mentioned he'll be doing guest vocals on upcoming Heavy Weight Champ album (fucking yay).Man I love TBE. Cog were next, whom I had been dying to see after buying their album like a week before, I was already hooked. Cog put on an AWESOME live show. Although some of Flynn's (Singer) speeches are lame. Tonights speech was on politics and such, I dunno, I dont care about that shite. But yeah, being new to Cog I'd now rank them up with the likes of TBE and Karnivool, pwnage.

TBE and Cog w/ (P)Antistatic @ Newport, Fremantle

Last show of the tour .....but the best . Sunday gigs in Freo start earlier for some reason :S...so yeah there was the festival type atmosphere happening around the streets, lame. Got in just after doors had opened, and the stage room thingy doors wernt open yet, but saw Clint from TBE and Cog bassist in the room. I held up my TBE banner to the window, and Clint waved :D. He then came out and said Hi shook our hands and such, and we got pics with him, awesome guy, best moment ever. PICS!

Antistatic opened (static viewing number 10). The PA at Newport sounded awesome, so Antistatic sounded good for once...:p. Haha nah they owned as per usual, cranked out a new song which pwnd. Anchored onto front position for TBE, had my banner hanging on the barrier which TBE bassist would chuckle at again (such a happy guy). TBE would provide me with the best live performance Ive ever witnessed. I was SO CLOSE to the band. The best moment would again come during Perception Twin when Clint came right up to me at the front, leant over and sang Perception Twin with me as MY head was touching HIS head, HIS sweat on MY head. I think he mainly did it because he forgot the lyrics again (he did at Pitstop, silly billy), and came looking for help, too bad I forgot aswell. Another great moment was during Crave when he was singing right in front of my face, like......SO CLOSE. It was insane. They seemed to be having a great time so fun was had by all. Best set ever. Setlist as promised!

Cog closed again, and succeeded in impressing myself again. Their music is so inspirational and heeeell catchy. Charades was cut :( so no 'glasses of homemade lemonnaaaaade (lemon-ay-hayde)' but still an awesome set. Better than Lookout gig. Flynn's speech was awesome this time around, he was talking about bands like Cog, TBE, Karnivool, Sunk Loto and such creating their own genre of music, not metal/emo/punk and such. Another huge pop for Karnivool, awesome. Such an awesome gig, but dissapointing that there wernt enough posters to steal of the gig (Ill have to eBay for one). In conclusion, if you havn't see The Butterfly Effect live, you havn't lived. Here's some pics for your viewing.

Love Mike :)

Oh yeah I also got this at Pitstop from Trav. I won it on TBE forums but the lazy cunt never sent it, so he bought it down.

So Sarah thought she'd post a pink picture of myself, seems innocent enough sure....but I wasn't gonna let her get away with it. Enjoy!

I'm so lame, apologies for the bad cut out jobs, and apologies to Shagan, Heather and Linzy for replacing their sexy heads with that of Hanson, what was I thinking?
