dear friends... just wanting to send you all my love from ethiopia. all is well withe me except for my stolen mobile phone last night...i was a victum of a classic pick pocket...i can almost remember it happening but, the heist was so good, i thought twice about checking on the spot.. it's all good though...this is about the worst it gets here, petty theivery... so... i'm knee deep in the culture now...my amharic is getting better, the food is getting routine (eating with injera), and i am gaining focus on my own music again which brings me joy. highlights from this time include a trip out of town to the city of axum, a visit from paul, and the recording of my first single "other side of the world" which we will be doing a video for soon. another bit of excitement for me is that my mother is coming to visit me soon. for that, i am so happy. god bless you all and thank you for sharing this adventure with me. until we meet again, here are the new photos: http://www.kalynmusic.com/livefromaddis6.swfpeace. k

Current mood: productive
hello all....checking in again to let you know that all is well with me...it's about 7am, and i have been up all night working on my latest photo diary, found at this link: http://www.kalynmusic.com/livefromaddis5.swftoday was ethiopian easter, fasika....did some serious eating...one meal and i was good for the whole day. have made many adjustments and i'm really starting to feel at home here. have met many cool people and at least once a day i meet someone who lives in dc or has lived in dc so i feel connected even in my absence. i often think about how much the city will have changed by the time i get back, which incidentally will be later than previously expected. things are going so well at the club, that they wish to have me stay longer....'til september, maybe even until next february....time will tell. made some serious progress on my new recordings last week. the title of the cd is "K is for Kenny".... I think this will be the last "K'Alyn" cd i will make. I've got other ideas in mind for the future....maybe a band, maybe i just become a producer, maybe miles silver will get his name in lights, maybe i devote my energies into something entirely new and different... that's where my head is at right now. no longer do i feel interested in "trying to get discovered." For I have discovered myself. I will always make music, but as for the hustle of "getting on", it just doesn't appeal to me. Again, time will tell....who knows...my new music might just hit the spot somewhere.... Harlem Jazz here in Addis, has become a great place for live music, and for that i feel good about my work. we started from just a reasonable crowd each night to being the place to be.I hope this message finds you all well...do send me a response if you get a minute.... sincerely,~ K ~

greetings family and friends....
it's been more than a month or so since i last wrote and all continues to be well for me. the club is becoming very popular, the music is getting nice, doing live recordings, recording my new album, got out of town a couple of times, and got some concerts in the works all over africa (tanzania, uganda, congo, nigeria, s. africa....)
latest photo diary can be viewed at:
http://www.kalynmusic.com/livefromaddis4.swf
right now, the country is preparing for fasting season so things may slow down a bit. we have also entered the rainy season so i'm adjusting to that a bit...after 2 and a half months of no rain at all...still the days continue to be pleasant.
for the most part, i am experiencing peace of mind mostly, but it does get lonely sometimes...it's hard to connect with folks without having mastery of the language. i am taking amheric classes once a week which is helpful a bit, but there's nothing like discovering someone who knows some good old english. nonetheless, i am determined to be fluent in the language, atleast conversational, before it's all said and done...plus it will help me on u street!
i continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers, and hopes for the days to come.
i am greatful for each and every one of you for being with me during this journey.
til we meet again....
god bless...

Current mood: artistic
things are going pretty good for me...still, everyday is an adjustment. i'm feeling settled for the most part....
the last month has been filled with holidays...two sets...american christmas and ethiopian christmas...so we have been very busy at the club....i have been trying to beef up my reporatoire as well as put more of my original songs in the set.
all and all the people are enjoying this entertainment option in addis and that's a good thing.
i am a little tired today as i played friday and yesterday...and ate myself to death on saturday for ethiopian christmas....i had the esteemed pleasure of having a couple components of my dinner saturday as pets for a week or so....as you will see in the lastest photo diary which i am happy to send the link for right here:
some funny stuff, i'm telling you. i am writing a lot of new songs which i can't wait to share and i have been playing lots of guitar....like all day long. the weather is incredible....it hasn't rained one time since i've been here. the people are so beautiful and the food is starting to feel good in my belly. the last three days i have only had habesha food...
so...that's about it for me for now....do click the link above for a more detailed story.
may all of your dreams continue to come true this year.
with love.

things are pretty cool today. i was crazy tired last night. i thought i gave a great show, acoustic last night.
setlist:
with you
reflections
let's get it on
ain't no sunshine
every breathe
my girl
stir it up
boogie on reggae woman
come alive
less than
sexual healing
higher ground
family affair
jammin'
etc.....
learning so many songs...i know i sound like a broken record...but...this whole cover thing is really taking its toll on me...now, i am obsesses with learning the whole motown catalog...
nonetheless, yesterday, i got myself back on track, really thinking about the record i am making....i loss focus for a minute thinking about the gig, but i am realizing that i have to treat it as such. in acouple of weeks, it should be on auto pilot.
another hot day in addis, i am on my way to rehearse with the band....met a percussionist last night who will be playing with me on sundays...
tonight is the second full band show....we are now thinking about connecting with the mtv here in africa...trying to get some coverage on my adventures over here....
i tell you, the last week should have been filmed.....
but whatever is meant to be documented will be....that's pretty much been my attitude while i am here. God is with me throughout this time...i can't forget it....it's imperative that i remember this...
that's it for now....
hope you are well....can't believe it's almost christmas.....
love to all of you.

Current mood: calm
hello my friends and family...
another beautiful day in addis. i am starting to find my groove, well a little bit, i can say. i didn't realize the altitude was so high here. for the first couple of days i could hardly breathe. then i remembered that many great marathoners come from here....
this is like the first day i have had to myself. been doing alot of pr for the club which opens officially on friday. we have been rehearsing like crazy and i think it will all come together really nicely. they are expecting about 700 people at the club. it will be the hottest thing that night in the whold town. i am starting to see the same people walking down the streets in random places which makes me realize what a small town it is.
i went to a dinner party on saturday, of a lady who is a major media person...kinda like the kathy hughes of addis and met some really great people. there is a a guy who goes by the name johny ragga...an amheric reggae artist....he's kinda like the shaggy of addis... maybe not such a good reference but we hung out at a club and i felt like i was in a music video. someone even tried to start a fight with the dude...how hip hop is that? :-)
my stomach has been slowly adjusting to all the spices in the food. now, those who know me, know that i can throw down to some spicey foods, but here...though the taste is not too much for me....there is something that happens post mouth that i can't explain...now i know this is really graphic...but i must share....i tend to be a gaseous person in general...free to release...well let's just say that i must be a bit more cautious with that release...ok,ok,ok...i got carried away.
have met more musician's through my new friend abegaz, who has to be one of the coolest demeanored dudes i've ever met. his studio is amazing and he is just a cool cat to be around. he and his crew play at the sheraton, which is this amazing hotel, the biggest and most expensive joint in all of addis...it looks like the tenth wonder of the world. it is owned by some billionaire cat from saudi arabia....
meeting folks, enjoying the music, learning the language, and preparing for the gig on friday...that's my life right now...
not so bad, ey.
i miss home, however i know that you are all here with me in spirit. i will make all of you very proud. just know that i am the first in addis from america to do something like this, a long term residency...that's what they tell me...so i am in fact making history ;-)
life is good...
so til next time....be safe and be blessed. i love you all..

whassup people's?
this is my first message from addis.
factoids...
- four seasons in a day...night's like winter, mornings like spring, midday like summer and late afternoons like spring...
- have had herds of sheep run up on me from behind walking down the streets...
- have smelled "foreign" smells that i cannot identify
- have been trying to check email for three days...
- have been adjusting to slower than average dialup internet when i do get on....
- have been treated very well..
- have been eating great food
- had my first rehearsal today and it's going to be cool...
- will be going out like a cover band on the first gig (motown....)
- have touched a donkey
- do live on an unpaved road
- have seen intense poverty
- am making major life adjustments...
- do miss mtv...
all and all things are pretty interesting and amazing all at the same time.
the club that i am playing at is called harlem jazz...it is the first establishment when you leave the airport. the club is very nice and jordana, who is the owner, has been very cool.
today is the first day that i feel comfortable with the city. i took a taxi to my rehearsal which was an adventure to say the least. i feel like i live in the hood...dirt road...mad stray dogs that howl like crazy....all night long....
the music is so off the chains here...they have this style whereby there is a guy who plays the drum, one who plays this traditional guitar, and a singer. they freestyle about whatever they see. everybody here thinks i'm ethiopian...i am blending well...
i haven't got settled yet to start working on music just yet...writing and recording...but i have met some great producers and musicians (abegaz....) tight...
tonight, i am going to a jam session at a place called the coffee house...
well...all and all i am surviving and feel like i will come back a changed man....
i send you all my love and wellness.
check you soon.

i'm sitting here @ mirror's in dc at an event called pookie's gallery held by my good friends munch and raquel. i am sick as a dog...my voice is suspect...hoarse and hurting badly... i performed a few songs tonight, bilal salaam joined me for the last one. good times. my father and family helped nurse me to the point that i could perform tonight. i couldn't even speak this morning when i woke....but i remained positive and optimistic and i was able to make it through...
dunno...just vibing...
peppermint tea, raspberry lozenges, echinecea and zinc tablets, chicken noodle soup, cayenne pepper, lemons, honey liquot...
i'm done for the night...

anyone out there feeling this way...it's not a bad thing...but i've spent more time on myspace than i have practicing or making music....it's pretty consuming....when will it all stop!
well...i'm enjoying all of the dialog it brings...the virtual thoughts...it's like one good friend with lots of different personalities....
babbling...
just a few thoughts.
