The pup is now officially a Munro Bagger  He did his first Munro last week - Sgor Gaoith (3668ft, 1118m) in the Cairngorms. He loved it and the views were brilliant that day - all the way to Ben Nevis, so could see the six highest mountains in the UK, apart from the 2nd Ben Macdui which was hidden behind Braeraich (3rd highest). It's great he can come out on the hills with us now.

The week before he did his first Corbett, so he's getting a good taste of mountains! I'm sure he'll be notching up a few more peaks over the summer.

On Saturday Corbie and myself met up with fellow lab owners at Strathclyde Country Park near Glasgow. It was great fun! There were eleven labs in total and they were having a great time running about and splashing in the water.  Hoping to have another soon at Balloch Park, on the shores of Loch Lomond.  A lab breeder came with four of her labs (nicknamed the Hooligans!), so we were chatting about showing and breeding.  I think all of us standing chatting with our doggies must've been likened to a school playground with mums and their children!

It's my dad's 60th birthday in August so trying to sort out when I can go down and keep everyone happy.  There's a labrador get together that the lab forum I moderate on is organising near Birmingham the weekend I'll be down and my friend has said I can travel with her and her lab, which would be great as there's no way I can do the 1000-mile round trip from here and back plus a drive to that.  I really want to go as so many people I want to meet who I've done portraits for adn there's a fun dog show, which Corbie would love . I would really like to be there for dad's actual birthday which is a Wednesday. Trying to sweet-talk other half, and hoping I can go down for almost a week with the pup and he comes down for the weekend.

Got an interview with Perth & Kinross Counil on Thursday, not looking forward to it as my mind goes blank at interviews.   I guess it's lack of interview experience, having only had 3 in the last 14 years. It's only a temporary job until the end of August and 18.5 hours a week. I would be nice to have the money coming in as we're really scraping the barrell (if it wasn't for one of my blimmin' loans we wouldn't be so bad) but Graeme said he would rather I did my portraits. Think I will have to sign on as been over a year and I haven't done it, so I think I derserve some of my hard-paid taxes back!! But I'm not going to sponge! Have applied for a job with Visit Scotland as well.

Have a couple of pet portraits lined up which is good, and the sun is shining today and it's lovely out.  I got rained on heavily yesterday morning when walking Corbie by the river.  I went out again about 7.30pm with him and it was lovely down there!

Yesterday we hiked up a Corbett (hill between 2500ft and 3000ft with 500ft clear to the summit, which is where our Lab's name Corbie comes from!). We parked at Balquhidder where Rob Roy is buried and started our climb to Meall na t-Seallaidh (852m).

The views were outstanding - to Ben Ledi, Ben Lomond, Stob Binnein and Ben More, Ben Lawers, Ben Vorlich and Stuc a 'Chroin, lochs Tay, Earn, Voil, Lubnaig. We never saw a single person on the hills, only saw 10 on the initial path which goes to Glen Dochart. The hike of 12km took us five and a half hours.

Today I'm nursing sore muscles! It's been a while since I've done a long, hill hike.

The weather was gorgeous all day, apart from a drizzly shower at the beginning of the walk.  We came home and started up the barbecue - first of the year!

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter.  My sister flew up to Edinburgh from Southampton on Friday morning and went back yesterday.  We had a great time. Graeme was also on holiday all of last week so we have been out and about a lot.

The first Saturday we hiked up a hill near Aberfeldy called Castle Dow, with amazing views of the Perthshire hills, all covered in snow. Then we drove to Kenmore and walked along the shore of Loch Tay.  The final drive was to Queens View which is a view point above Loch Tummel. It was very clear and we could see the mountains of Glencoe.

On the Sunday we did a local walk skirting Fanny Hill (yes, that is the real name of the hill, oo-er) which was a good woodland walk and good views of more of the Ochil Hills.

Monday Corbie and me went walking in the hills alongside Dumyat, near Stirling, while Graeme tackled four of Glen Lyon's Munros!

Tuesday we drove to the Bathgate Hills, near Edinburgh, and had a lovely walk through woodland and met two chocolate labradors so Corbie had a good play with them. My dad was working in Kirkintilloch as well for a couple of days (the company that he works for has their main head office there), so he came over in the evening and we had an Indian takeaway.

On Wednesday we went to Falkirk and raided Sports & Soccer to get a new football and giant tennis ball for Bailey, Graeme's parents dog, and also bought Corbie a new giant tennis ball. Then we went to G's parents for the rest of the day.

Thursday we went to a beach alongside Kingsbarns golf course. It was so windy.  We brought Corbie's ball on a rope with us to throw for him.... G threw it and the wind carried it into the sea - would Corbie get it? Nope, G rolled up his trousers and waded in up to this thighs in the water to get it

Friday, picked my sister up from airport and we went to Baxters to stock up on shortbread  and took Corbie for a walk by the river.

Saturday was snow hunting day. My sister lives on the south coast of England, so has not seen a lot of snow (just as I hadn't until I moved up to Scotland). So we ended up at Cairngorm Mountain! On the way back stopped off at The House of Bruar, which sells all shortbreads, nice chuntneys, etc.

Sunday we hiked up East Lomond, but it was so busy - forgot that children like to roll hard-boiled eggs down hills! I'm so glad we didn't take Corbie, as he would've been eating all the egg remnants! After getting all wind-swept on East Lomond, we had a walk along Loch Leven.

Yesterday we took Corbie for a walk up a local hill and he had a good time playing.

Back to the normal routine today.

Update:
Have just listened to 'Having It All' on Radio Scotland which was written by Jackie Bird of Reporting Scotland fame.  It was really good and I thought I recognised a few of the casts voices and I was right as they've appeared in the Karen Dunbar Show.

All hell will be breaking loose here soon if a dead swan is confirmed to have the 'deadly' H5N1 bird flu virus.  There is no risk to humans, yet that doesn't stop the media scare-mongering. I'd better start stock-piling the freezer full of chicken before that gets taken off the shelves.

Apparently there is a two mile restriction zone around where the swan was found (Cellardyke, Fife - about 35 miles from me as the crow flies )! The birds are the only things that need to be kept away, but I can't see that happening.

The media just love this sort of thing.  I'm guessing that BBC's Reporting Scotland will be devoted to that tonight. Hopefully Jackie Bird (no pun intended) will come up with some funny quips related to that, the story just lends itself to it.

I'm sure I heard that to get infected you have to be in constant contact with them like working with poultry, etc?

Anyway, enough about birds....

Living in the country is bliss. Stepping out of the back door on a spring or summer's evening and hearing the little lambs baa-ing, the cows mooing, the ducks and the river.  We have a road at the back of the house but the traffic more-or-less stops in the evening, so it's always really quiet. There are lovely walks on the doorstep.  I've seen so many different bird species on the trees in the front garden while I'm sitting watching TV - a sparrowhawk even landed in one of them on Sunday!

But that brings me to one of the downsides to living in the country - noisy birds that sing at 5.30am!

There's a song thrush that sits in next door's tree which also backs onto our house.... 5.30 every morning it's out there singing away! It also starts about 8pm as well.  It has 10 different warbles, or thereabouts, which it repeats over and over.  Yesterday morning I laid in bed thinking 'do I get up and go out there and shoo it off?'. So I got up at 5.50am, put my dressing gown on, found the water pistol and went into the garden  It was out of range so I started to throw stones into the tree to try and scare it off.  It went all quiet for a while, so I went back to bed - 10 minutes later it started again.

So Graeme bought ear plugs yesterday

Noisy thing was out there again this morning. But at least the pheasants have stopped tap-dancing on the roof in the mornings.

The job hunting is still on-going. I never thought it would be so difficult, but I have to try and find something part-time, not too far away (within 30 miles, so rules out Edinburgh which seems to have all the jobs) and all because I love my doggy  We didn't get Corbie to leave him at home alone all day, and that is not really good for a dog anyway.  I also heard from my ex-boss who said there may be something for me related to my old job shortly, which would be the ideal scenario as I could still work from home then. I was doing some editing work for a couple of days this week for them.

The art  is going well though.  Working on a labrador portrait at the moment, and should have a couple of cats to do over the next couple of weeks as well.  I now have a feedback page on my portraits of pets website and it's all been glowing. Everyone has said some lovely things.

Yesterday we went for a nice walk to a place called Glen Lennock near Crieff. Lots of waterfalls and Corbie enjoyed paddling in the river.  There were a few showers about, was the start of April afterall, but it was really mild.  Great views when we took a detour up to Lord Meville's Monument.

Today was supposed to be raining, but can't see any yet!

Well, as if Sunday's 14+ inches of snow wasn't enough, we've been having more on and off today.

Corbie, my labrador, decided he didn't want to go home when on our walk earlier and avoided having his lead being put back on by running in circles around me, whilst I stood getting soaked as the snow got heavier.

My shoulder, which I injured whilst sledging on Monday, is not hurting as much today as it has done.

Now the dog has just come along and opened the office door, let all the nice heat out and wandered off elsewhere

I watched most of a programme called Fat Pets which was on Channel 4 last night.  Myself and fellow dog owners have come to the conclusion that feeding a pet to the point where it's very obese and it's life is in danger is the same as starving a pet.  There was a Rottweiler on there that could hardly move and was fed all this meat and the owner didn't care less, said the dog was happy even if it only lived a short life  The dog could hardly move and spent most of its time panting and being cooled by fans! Poor thing. I'm sure it would love to be out running about.

Animal cruelty of any kind makes me so angry.

I also finished a pet portrait yesterday and had the person who commissioned it in tears because she loved it so much - always makes me happy when I know I've done a good job.
