I'm in LA again, for a couple of weeks.

I've been meeting some producers out here about doing my next record. It's pretty exciting because I haven't really been ready to talk about any of that stuff for ages, i really haven't wanted to. I've wanted to hang out and watch jeremy kyle and see my friends and go to the cinema and clean out my fish tank and pass my driving test. But i finally feel ready to start getting stuck into thinking about how to stick these songs together that I've been working on for the past 8 months. I feel like the songs are stamps and i need to get someone to lick the the back of the stamps and put them in the right place on the envelope.

I'm excited.

Good timing too because the cribs are also in LA and i bet you can't wait to hear their new album, it's going to make you so happy.

I had a meeting with this guy in a crunky mansion on laurel canyon and it was huge and i've never been in a mansion before and i got to sit and drink rose and look at a mansion and it was very exciting for me.

i passed!
I passed my driving test yesterday, the 26th of march.
i'm so happy! i only got one minor and it was a sunny happy day. it feels so good to pass your driving test, i got a real sense of achievement. now all i need is to get a car and then i can drive it.

oh relief. i've can't believe the amazing beautiful spring weather we had last week. i went to the park with my dogs and just hung around in there for about 3 hours every day...while my dogs scavanged around for bits of food, tennis balls and leftover starbucks (i can't say i agree with their politics, but they are labs and to be honest, they'd probably eat your leg if it dropped off) max also found a hardly eaten ribena flavoured calipo lying around and gobbled that down too. all in all a great day. can't really say the same for the weather this week but i've been in my rehearsal room playing with a new 24 track anyway so i don't mind too much.

i've been fairly busy the last couple of months. i went on tour with the cribs for their uk dates
which were fucking great. you should be very excited about their new album. then i went to portland for a wedding. i knew a couple once who got married in space. they took off their space helmets and their heads popped exploding confetti into the universe. that, is how stars were made.

i've also been working very hard as a board member and director of the featured artist coalition. you may or may not have seen a few things in the press about it, we had our launch a couple of weeks ago now. i got involved last september and we're basically a coalition run by artists for artists to protect artists rights and to give them(us) a seat at the table...to have relationships with governments and get a say basically in what should happen to our music and how it's used/exploited etc. and how the industry is run. it's essentially taking responsibility for the work that you do. there's great people involved who i've been lucky enough to work with including billy bragg, dave rowntree and ed o'brien. it's been so educational and i've really got my politics head on, which my mum is pleased about. i even got a chance to have a sit down meeting with paul mccartney. a cup of tea with macca, i felt like lucy in the sky with diamonds i tell you, sitting there and talking about his experiences and listening to stories about him and john signing their deal and making sgt. peppers. wow wow wow. very happy indeed, what a priviledge. Anyway we had a very successful launch, i did a podcast with the minister of culture and we had a meeting a couple of days ago with a bunch of mps and people in the industry. i'm happy to say i think we're really being heard.

apart from that i went to a missoni launch dinner last thursday, which is very unusual for me because to be honest, i don't wear designer stuff. not being a vintage snob or anything, but you know i just can't deny my love for 2nd hand junk. but anyway they sent me this really pretty fine knit dress with these lovely pink and greens and a 60's sort of pattern and asked me to dinner, so i couldn't resist. i met mr. & mrs missoni who seemed lovely and we ate some delicious food. it was lovely.

ermm....anything else...i finished my book and would highy recommend it, billy childish 'my fault' i loved it.

i also went to see the lightning seeds gig at the hospital, 4 tracks from the new album. i'm looking forward to getting it and listening to that, all the sounds were so enriched and my ears wanted to eat them up. they had the most amazing sounding 12 string acoustic guitar, i've never appreciated a 12 string guitar before, i thought they were for wankers, but i was totally naive, it was beautiful. a slide guitar and one of those massive glocks, i forget their names, they had gorgeous organ sounds too and lovely old amps. loved listening to it. yeah, that stuff's highly recommended too. check it out.

i'm gonna post a few pictures cause i haven't in a while and then i'm going to bed. i had a friday night in front of the telly which was nice and i'm going to a walk from temple to trafalgar sq. tomorrow from 2, it's to raise awareness about autism. my cousin is autistic so my aunty is heavily involved and it's pretty close to home. anyone who is around, the support is very welcomed.

bye.x

i failed my driving test. rubbish. reverse around a corner. how crap. anyway i've rebooked it and i'm not disheartened as my driving isn't actually very bad, some say infact that it's rather marvelous but i can't reverse around a corner, it's just very difficult. more practice needed!

so it's cold and it's nearly not january anymore (hooray!) i forgot how depressing it can actually be in january. the grey days and fears and insecurities and the effort needed to get out of bed in the morning. last year i was all flying around australia on the big day out thinking january was the probably the best month in the year but being in london and trying to figure out what to do is...less inspiring...anyway, it hasn't been all that bad, i've been getting involved with lots of things to keep my mind off feeling weird in january. i've been writing new songs and demoing them and reading venus zine. which is the only magazine i like at the moment. it supports a lot of female artists and independent artists/shops/designers/photographers etc. it always has a great list of little online shops that sell nice things. i''ve also become heavily involved with setting up the Featured Artists Coalition, we have the launch meeting next week. it's going to be run by artists for artists, to look after artists rights in this strange old industry. i find it so surprising that this hasn't already been set up seeing as you have so many other organisations looking out for a lot of people in a lot of industries. but it hasn't, and we are, and that's exciting.

i've been youtubing quite a lot. watching interviews with beyonce or christina ricci, watching me you and the beast and the snoring duck. very cute. i've been reading billy childish my fault and also the consolations of philosophy, and by the way scolates tends to be extremely relevant in day to day life. i've been visiting friends and thinking about travelling. i want to go to brazil. seeing as it's oscar season i've been desperate to see a bunch of films and if you haven't seen the reader go and see it because it's just so brilliant. i love kate winslet and this film is just so good. i went to a burns night, never done that before but i will again. the scots know how to party, there was haggis being stabbed, bagpipes being played, champagne and brandy cocktails, horses, flower arrangements, poetry, family bands. (i saw the northern version of the trachtenburgh family slideshow players, the young family, trying to get them to come on tour with me) and from the photos everybody looks like they just walked out of the loony bin. i also met a clever, pretty horse called 'made of bricks'. how cool is that? i get a horse tribute.

i can't upload any pictures at the moment but once i've found the right lead i'll do it.

2 websites that you should check out are these
one is for v day, it's a really inspiring global movement to end violence against women and raise awareness and funds through eve ensler's 'the vagina monologues'.

and also this one

this little girl tilly lockley has lost both of her hands because she got meningitus and then septicemia. she's the sweetest thing, really so so cute, and they've made her a pair of hands, but because she's so young they have to be replaced ever year because of her size, and the hands are costing around £200,000. the family are trying to raise money so that they can give their little girl hands. you can read her full story and make donations through the website.

i'm going to go and try and find that lead for my camera and then have some dinner. happy new year, it might be cold and rainy and difficult to get up in the morning but it is a new year and psychologically that feels good. you can forget about old grudges and look for new ones. and it's a time of exciting and incredible change historically - barack obama. it really is inspiring, in a time when technology goes so far forward that it makes us go backwards, and tv is rubbish and everything seems so superficial and cheap and fast and easy, it's so nice that something really important can happen and it's all just very human and natural.

anyway, anyone who's really been suffering the january blues, don't worry it's almost over.x

Hello all
i hope everyone is feeling christmas spirited, it's nearly here i guess.
i've done minimum amount of shopping. i go in for 15 minutes and have to leave cause it freaks me out, too many people, too many things etc.
i bought some stuff off ebay, i'm very excited, being about 5/6 years behind everyone else when it comes to technology i've never done this before. once i got my friend to bid on some polaroid cameras and we won, that was good. but this time i just clicked on the buy now buttons, this is much less stressful than bidding.

so i was in the studio last week doing some demos, we did 10 tracks in 4 days and i figure the less time you spend on something the more work you do, there's no time for messing around so you get on with stuff. i'm really happy with the tracks, i've also got 4 other songs that i demo'd in the summer, happy with those too. i'm still down at my rehearsal room writing, rehearsing, playing with candles and thinking too much.i got some pretty good skull lights for 8 pounds in woolworths that keep my amp company (so sad about woolworths, i guess it's a generation thing). so anyway hopefully i'll do some more writing. then have a bunch to chose from, or i guess i'll just run out of things to say and start writing rubbish and then realise my album must be done. (but i feel like it could be there, really nearly there) but i still have to figure out who to record it with and then record it after that, so still a while before you'll be hearing any of it. thought i would just update you regardless.

My friends 'Peggy Sue' played at 12 bar the other night for the launch of their newest e.p 'the first aid ep'. it was mesmerising, they are beautiful, and i haven't seem them play for so long, i got to hear all their new songs and see their new instruments (and drummer! - olly) it was wonderful i loved it. go see them at the lock tavern if you can on the 14th. they'll be great. erm...also see if there's any tickets for the cribs gigs early next year, i think they might be sold out but maybe there might be 2 left for you and your granny. it's going to be so fun and so good.

be nice and fair to everyone.
"Punk means exemplary manners towards your fellow human beings." -Joe Strummer
i got told about this quote yesterday. it's pretty amazing. sad that it's true, that treating people right would be punk/alternative/a statement about living differently. but people need to stop being pricks to each other, especially at christmas, it's too cold for that bollocks.

good luck christmas shopping and caroling. wear gloves. lots of love
x

oh p.s i was lucky enough to sing with the most wonderful billy bragg last week at shepherds bush empire. he was wonderful and had an amazing gig. i think we might be hooking up in january to record a track.

I haven't logged in here for ages so I thought I would drop in and catch up. I love this time of year, when it gets dark at about 4 and it's freezing and the trees are a nice colour. I'm currently house hunting and learning to drive, I passed my theory! i was so nervous at the test centre, what a loser. Anyway i did a couple of gigs recently. One for Moshi Moshi (indi label who put out my first single), it was their birthday party and me jay and elliott played. i did mostly new stuff and it was scrappy and fun like the old days, Robin from Brighton, if you're reading this then i saw you in the crowd and i tried to find you after to say hello but couldn't and i had to leave early. The other gig was at my friends night 'Homework' at the bethnal green working mens club. ( the bethnal green working mens club is nice, it has tinsel curtains which i'm a real sucker for) It's a good night anyway, interesting stuff, not generic. go.

I watched Sophie's Choice the other night, i can't even really word how it makes you feel watching it, it's one of those that just guts you, you know? These beautiful and uplifting charcters that you just love with these haunting secrets that gives the film it's dark undertone. It's just so sad. I can't believe the nazis actually happened, when you read about it it's mindblowing. So frightening. Music wise i've been listening to Scarlett johanssons Anywhere i lay my head, tom waits covers. I love it. Apart from that just an old david bowie tape i found in a charity shop and bikini kill reject all american which has undoubtedly become an all time obssession. Oh and also Lay Low, an icelandic singer, check out her myspace...http://www.myspace.com/baralovisa, i like her.

My Friend LAURA DOCKRILL aka DOCKERS MC has had her book published and you can now buy it, in real life shops! yer! Buy it here...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mistakes-Background-Laura-Dockrill/dp/000730059X

look how pretty it is...It's beautiful, if you've seen my merch then you'll know her artwork and there's loads of beautiful artwork, poerty and short stories in there. you have to get one to keep for your own.

I've watched so many horror films recently, i got really into halloween and have watched loads, and ever since have had trouble sleeping, dreamt in nightmares and spend a lot of time conjuring up escape routes from any place i happen to be in for when zombies happen. Dead Set was great i thought. bleak. Zombies are so scary. shudder.

I've done a couple of tvs; I went on 'this week' and talked about sexism, FEMINISM is not a dirty word. it does not mean you hate men, it does not mean you hate girls that have nice legs and a tan, and it does not mean you are a 'bitch' or 'dyke', it means you believe in equality. don't be afraid of it, it's really important to know about and fight for. I've become more and more aware of it the more life experience i get, particularly working in the music industry. I was lent a book called 'Sisterhood Interrupted' by Deborah Siegal and it's a really easy and good read. It's not pretentious, it doesn't presume you know everything about feminist history and it doesn't feel exclusive. You can buy it here...

So the other tv i did was 'Frock Me', an interview with Alexa Chung about Anti Fashion and individual style, that's on the week after next i think.

Oh one other thing i wanted to mention was a picture of me and my friend wesley that was in one of the london papers, apparently he's my new mystery man

Photobucket

well actually you might recognise him from here, the video from Pumpkin Soup.

Photobucket

He's one of my oldest, greatest friends and is certainly not new or a mystery to me. And anyway i have a boyfriend who most of you know and love very much. and so do i. So that's that cleared up.

Well that's really all i've been doing apart from a bit of knitting (i now do hats!) and writing new songs and rehearsing and watching pirates of the caribbean 2 and atonement and watching my friends band loverman and watching people put up wallpaper and going to thoms night experimental circle club and buying more crap that i like from second hand shops and thinking about the trachtenburg family slideshow players and mei-ling in beijing and pianos and amps and christmas.

I hope you are all well and happy and enjoying winter. I'll soon be posting up some info about this charity trust fund for artists that i'm setting up which is very exciting, but that's all for now.

bye.x

hello all
just wanted to write a bit about the last 2 gigs, one in clapham at get loaded in the park and the other in edinburgh at the corn exchange.
thanks so much to everyone who came, it's so near the end of this album tour/campaign/whatever, it all feels a bit strange.
firstly i just wanted to apologise for 2 things, 1 being the fact that our set was cut so short at get loaded. another band had over run with their change over so we had to loose about 3 or 4 songs which was a shame, and secondly to people waiting outside the corn exchange.i came out straight after the gig and saw a bunch of people and signed some stuff and i wanted to come out again later but pretty much collapsed in the dressing room and passed out for a bit, i've caught an infection that was going around at leeds and after the gig it took me out and i felt so sick. i went straight to the bus and into my bunk to sleep.
anyway, i really loved the gigs, thanks to everyone who came for being part of it. and thanks to emmy the great and the cribs for playing too. 2 gigs left now and then i'm off to record some demos, learn to drive, and maybe buy a cute bunny.

reccomendations this week...
david bowie.
charles darwin.
dolly parton.
her naked skin.
my winnipeg.
painting.
pots and pans.
pianos.

anyway i'm off to bed with some hot tea to get better for paris and untrecht. see you there.
lots of love.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hello all
watching irobot on e4 +1. i love will smith.
i've got a bunch of pictures from japan and the festivals we've been playing over the summer so i'm gonna post them up here. Japan really was incredible, like no place i've ever been to. beautiful and ancient and serene dense greenery with nature and history, temple and shrines and then the intensity and madness of tokyo and shibuya, a mish mash of colour, technology and stuff you've just never seen! so cool. and the festival was fun too, up in the mountains and playing my first ever gig in japan. lots of fun.
i've been to glastonbury, t and oxygen, melt, so many festivals, thanks to everyone for making it so fun, i've only got a few gigs left now which is kind of weird. i ended up playing trinity last night, in my hometown of harrow, a gig for my friend pearse, it was his last night promoting there and he put my first ever gig there so that was really cool. pretty chaotic, we could hardly all fit on the stage and i actually toppled offstage, piano, stool and i at one point. it was nice to be back home and see all the friendly faces.

me and my skeleton dancers...they're buff with skin.

hello everybody

i'm sitting in my living room drinking tea. i've been playing with my dogs drinking tea and watching 'style her famous'. yesterday i went to the doctors, made dinner and went out for a pint. it's been blissfully normal! we're back from america and already diving into new things, i'm going on tour again on saturday! can't believe it. we've had so many adventures already... america was so much fun, we've seen niagra falls...pier 39 with the sea lions and robin williams in san fransisco... drunk fancy cocktails in LA... been on a boat trip in boston to see humpback whales in the wild! (that one was on my list), watched cabaret in new york and been intrigued as to how that lady put that russian doll where she did for so long and manage to pop it straight back out again with such control...i had a cashew nut and apricot jam toasted sandwich, so yummy! ate lobster, ate crab for the first time ever, played at first avenue and watched purple rain with drunken anticipation...had the pleasure of spending over a month with the fabulous trachtenburg family slideshow players who helped to keep us all sane with their gifts, creativity and wisdom and now we're back. and it's all a mish mash, multicoloured, swirly, tye dye, glitter glue, intoxicating, magical blur of  memories and polaroids, souveneirs and a few messy suitcases which need to be emptied and repacked. i've tried to upload some photos onto the computer but i can't seem to make it work. i'm such a technophobe.

i'm listening to scarlett johansson's stuff and i really love it. i love the soundscapes and her voice is really low range on it and interesting. it reminds me a bit of sinead o'connor and it's good to listen to and feel nostalgic and thoughtful to, which is how i'm feeling at the minute after all the madness. i read a review about it the other day on the bus (i must have been fucking bored because i hate reading reviews of albums, it always does my head in) anyway it was a fairly good review of the album, from the sound of it the guy liked what he heard, however he chose to end the review rather negatively. he pondered as to who would listen to it anyway? it was a crazy idea and the only people who would buy it would be those who were obssessed with tom waits or who fancied scarlett jonhansson and perhaps she should have just released a perfume instead... this kind of patronising cynicism completley riles me, i can't stand it. everybody makes pre-judgements of other people, even if you don't want to sometimes we can't help it as human beings, it seems to be in our defensive nature and i'm sure everyone had their own pre-conceptions of what an 'actress out of hollywood' might stereotypically bring out musically and cash in on. this might suck, preconceptions usually do, but at least it comes from actual evidence of people doing it before her. if he'd written that he didn't like the idea of it but the album was actually pretty good and even though he didn't want to like it he couldn't help but do so then i would say fair game, honesty's fine by me. but it does my head in that he had to bring it down such a shitty level, cutting her down because he can roll his eyes and pass it off as nonsense because 'she's a pretty little girly girl from hollywood who thinks she can have a go at dressing up like daddy'. shouldn't we just stick to what we do best girls and smell nice? sell ourselves short? and shut the fuck up? it's blatant sexism. it's another thing a girl just simply isn't allowed to do. along with eating, getting old, sweating, swearing, getting drunk, fucking up and going to rehab. and i know if i start talking about this i'm a 'dyke' and 'a man hater' and i'll be 'knocked off that pedalstool missy' but these kind of attitudes should be thought of as prehistoric. if you must attack at least attack fairly, don't be so petty. point is i hate arrogant sexist patronising twats, i'm really more into equality. let's get there already! and i really like scarlett johanssons music. if you haven't checked it out you should do.

p.s i also hate racism, george bush and war.

i'll try and get my photo's uploaded but it might take a while, i'm rubbish with computers.

Lastly just wanted to thank everyone for all the continued support! you're all amazing and keep me going. thanks to everyone for being so nice in america when it was so big and scary and long, and for the lovely welcome home in coventry, leeds and newcastle. x

Friday, March 28, 2008
i’m sitting in a hotel room in germany, we’re doing a gig tonight in hamburg for some sort of radio gig. we were in berlin yesterday, and i actually managed to get a chance to look around the place a bit, if you haven’t been to germany you have to go, it’s a really great country. i bought some shoes and some cameras, we saw the last remaining bits of the original bit of the berlin wall, the brandenburg tor and the memorial for the murdered jews of eurpope which was really quite intense. it’s very uniform and could be representative of a number of things, it switches between being a grey, swirly maze and an excellent playground for children and a rather breathtaking and thought provoking, very serious piece of memorial art. worth a visit.

well things have been as usual absolutley mad recently.after flying home from australia i had two weeks in london rehearsing for tour, recording b sides, going to awards shows, doing bits of press and trying to fit in sleeping, eating and seeing the people that i love. i’m still getting my head around winning the brit, thanks so much for your support, can’t believe it. and the nme and elle award, again thanks. then i did my uk tour going up and down the country visiting here and there, went on the scary rides at the funfair and lost some shrapnel on the machines. we ended the tour in hammersmith apollo which blows my mind. i remember when i was mixing my album in the back of the place and trying to sneak my head round the door when blondie was playing. we had confetti machines and a fancy dress party for the aftershow. fun was had!

2 days later i’m on a flight to texas for sxsw, i played 3 acoustic shows out there, 2 with billy bragg! and i had the best time at those gigs, there were about 200 or so people at each and i could really see into everyones eyes, communicate my songs to them and try out new stuff which is always fun. i also watched the cribs at stubbs, and peggy sue and the pirates at a really cool bbq with a handbuilt stage and a pond! then i saw tiny masters of today and thought they were the best thing ever. and later watched my friend hollie play with the slits. then we went to a party and i flew out to new york the next day to play with the pogues and billy bragg again. i played my tin whistle seeing as it was st.paddys day the next day & everyone was happy with that.
then i flew out to athens, georgia and hung around on the cribs tour for a bit. jeffrey lewis & the jitters were supporting and if you haven’t heard that then you should check that out too. as soon as you can...so rounding up that’s 1.tiny masters of today 2.billy bragg 3. the cribs 4.peggy sue & the pirates 5.the slits 6.the pogues & 7. jeffrey lewis & the jitters. you’ll get some excellent mixed tapes out of those.

hmm. erm, so back from america and 3 days off for easter. i saw my family, caught up with a few friends and watched some old episodes of buffy. bliss. i also wrote a story about a rat that will probably be in the next issue of ’my ignorant youth’ (which is at last on it’s way! hooray!) i did a gig at guildford uni and stayed over at my sisters house for the house. then it was back home to mess of suitcases that is my room and emptied a few and swapped dirty clothes for clean and tried to figure out what i’m going to do with all the crap i keep buying on tour, maybe i’ll have to move out one day, and here i am in germany, listening to the smiths in a hotel room and writing a blog.

i just remembered i actually wanted to clean up something somebody told me was written about me in the papers. from what i’ve been told it was under the header ’nash bash’ in a tabloid. that’s quite exciting really i’ve been waiting for those, here’s some more for any journalists reading this tripe... ’nash’s secret stash’ my shoplifting habbit gets out of hand on the kings road ’nash has a tash’ for when it’s been a while since my last wax/bleach ’ ’nash gets mashed, and we’re not talking potato’ ’nash show us your gash’ is often a popular one for the more crude member of the public. and ofcourse there’s the classic ’nash flash’ shot of me stumbling out of a car somewhere in soho at 3 in the morning after, gasp, drinking! with a star over where my kinckers should be. anyway what i really wanted to say was that it said i said nasty things about leaona lewis which aren’t true. i met leona at the brit awards backstage and she was a really sweet girl. i think what happend there was one of those clever dick edits where i’m asked about leona, then the x factor to which i reply ’no, i wouldn’t do the x factor, i want to write my own songs, have creative control, the whole ’popstar’ thing was an accident blah blah blah’ and then they say ’yeah you’ve worked really hard haven’t you?’ and i say ’yeah, i guess i have done. well yeah i have.’
and cut, paste, move, edit and a few adjectives later...ta...daa. the female on female bitch slagging match begins. i’m not into it. i specifically said heads up to all the other girls in the category ’best british female’ at the brits helping to eradicate the misconception that female is a genre. anyway. enough of that. i just wanted to clear that up.

i’ve got to go do a tv thing now, i’ll put up some pictures later tonight.
take care.
oh and i listened to laura marlings album for the first time on the train today and it really is beautiful. katy and rosa have been telling me for ages. also i love soko.
