we entered one of those internet band contests a little while ago. i had completely forgotten about it until i got this email...

It is our pleasure to inform you that your band has been selected to advance to the semi-final round of The New England Institute of Art Last Band Standing Contest. You and 19 other semi-finalists are part of the public voting stage of the competition. All 20 bands are posted for public vote from Monday November 6, 2006 through Friday December 1, 2006. The top ten entries receiving the most votes will advance to the final phase of the contest beginning on Saturday December 3 2006.

Encourage your fans to vote at www.fnxradio.com/lastbandstanding up to one vote per email address per day.

Best of luck in the biggest round of Last Band Standing!

The Phoenix and WFNX

...yay for us! i'd feel like an idiot asking anyone to go back to this thing everyday, but there you have it. so please vote for us (at least once). i'm sure there's something good in it for us, but i really can't remember what. ...oh, apparently if we win, we get a record deal. woo!

So this is pretty cool: in case you weren't already aware of this, there exists such a thing as the Band in Boston Podcast. We were invited to record an in-house session of songs for them a couple of weeks ago, and it is now available for download at their website as "The Flophouse Sessions 11 - Killer Canary".

This was a pretty unique performance, and I'll tell you why: prior to heading over, we were told that they have a "tiny" drum set that Zak would have to play because anything bigger would elicit noise complaints from the neighbors. So we get there, and it turns out that the "tiny" drum set is a First Act Discovery Five-Piece Junior Drum Set, as in:

Zak, who stands 6'5" tall, was initially dubious at the prospect of adapting our songs and himself to fit a 2' tall set (I wish we had a photo of him crouched behind the set, trying to sing and play while somehow maintaining some shred of dignity- that's an image I'm going to take with me for a very long time), but I think it ended up sounding pretty cool, and it also gave our songs a more mellow feel than we're used to- Anthony even felt compelled to whip out an acoustic for several of the songs! It was certainly a change from how we're used to sounding (i.e. fast and loud), but I'm very happy with the results, and we had a great time recording it. So thanks a bunch to Band In Boston for having us on, and thank you, gentle reader, for having us on in your life. Go download it, now!

I felt I should mention here that there exists a very cool podcast called Band in Boston, and they were nice enough to mention us and play "Miles Per Hour" in episode 7. Aside from us, they also play some really good music from other local bands, so on behalf of the band, I give this podcast a very hearty endorsement. Cheers!

With yet another Bastille Day fast approaching, we couldn't help ourselves and decided to celebrate a little early by posting a brand new song on our website! Available for you to download, for free! It's called "Laguna", it's very summer-y, you could listen to it while hydrating yourself and trying to avoid sun stroke!

Also, don't forget our July 5th Countdown To Bastille Day '06 at the Skybar bar in Somerville; there will be plenty of beer and liquor there, but please B.Y.O.B. (bring your own brie). Mark it on your calendars now!

I said mark it. NOW!!!

Introducing the new Killer Canary game, "Where's Zak?"  Here we go:

Oh poo, Zak wandered off from band practice and ended up at a crowded We Are Scientists gig.  Help us find him in the picture below and get him back behind his drum set in time for our big show!

Look carefully.  Did you find him?  If you answered "yes", then hooray for you!  You win!

I want to express my undying graticitude (it's a word, look it up) to all of you great people who came out to our gig last night, I was blown away at what a great crowd we were able to get at 11:30 on a Tuesday night.  You rule.  I know a lot of you were probably very tired at work today (as were many of us in the band), and we are so appreciative that you guys came out and supported us.  We promise we will do everything we can to make sure all of our future gigs are either on the weekend or at a reasonable hour.

To all of you pussies who stayed home because it was past your bedtime, you make me sick.  Nevertheless, I hope to see all of you at our next gig, to be announced soon!!!

Love,
Steve

So I'm thrilled to announce that Killer Canary has grown a fourth member by the name of Anthony Mantia. We've had a few practices and things are going great, he has certainly injected new life into many of our songs and has also given us the ability do a bunch of songs we've written that aren't possible with a 3-piece. Another piece of exciting news is that we will be playing the Middle East upstairs on January 10th. We'll be playing some new stuff including this really cool and catchy-as-all-hell song that Zak wrote called "Paper Thin."

That's all for now, hope to see a lot of people at the show (don't worry, there will be many more reminders as we get closer to the day).

So once again, I'd like to thank the people to made it to our show the other night (and the ones who expressed their sincere regrets for not being able to make it), it was a very fun birthday.

We don't have any confirmed gigs to tell you about now but we're working on it.  We're also crossing our fingers that Zak will be able to get his shit together so we can start recording a bunch of new songs.  So everybody please say a little prayer tonight before you go to bed that Zak will get his shit together (I hear that he's a very busy boy, I haven't actually seen or heard from him in months).

That's all for now, more to come later.  Until then, keep watching the sky!

Just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came and rocked the fuck out last night at O'Brien's. Definately the funnest show we've played. I hope you guys will all make it to our next show on 11/9 (my birthday!) at the Abbey Lounge in Somerville and hear some of our original stuff (need directions? so do I, maybe you could help me out with that!) And incidentally, if anyone knows who took that gigantic shit on the sidewalk right outside of the bar (see the picture in one of our comments), would you help me get in touch with him/her? I would really love to pick their brain... Love, Steve
