(This is an old song ~ a little over a decade old, but it's a story about a guy who was my supervisor years ago at an electronic assembly plant, and just thought I'd share it with you.)
Like a cumbersome bear walkin' out of the woods,
you could find Earl walkin' down the hallways.
A full head of hair, and a beard to match it,
you could see him every work day
as he made his rounds through the assembly lines
keeping track of faces,
keeping track of times.
Oh, you could always count on him
to be there ~
Big Earl.
He was a country boy born in West Virginia,
but he made his home in Arizona.
Big Earl, he loved the girls
'specially the pretty ones,
but for many years, he stayed a loner.
Then he met a woman who could match his stride
and he knew without a doubt he wanted her for his bride.
Oh, what a happy man he was ~
the day he found her.
He was a fun lovin' man who never placed a bet
unless he knew for certain he wouldn't lose.
He even bet poor Heidi that he would marry before her
for fifty dollars and a bottle of booze.
Next day he came to work with a ring on his hand,
for he'd known all along he'd be a married man.
And poor Heidi ~
she learned the hard way . . .
NEVER bet with Big Earl!
A strong and healthy man, he never missed a day
in all the years of his career.
And he got recognition from the company . . .
for always being there.
No, there wasn't anyone who could ever recall
a day when Earl had called in sick.
So when that first call came, it was so hard to believe ~
Could it be that Earl was playin' some kind of trick?
Well, the news spread fast of how they'd found some tumours . . .
and it didn't look to good for him.
But Big Earl was just that kind of guy
who wasn't one to just give in.
And though the pain was more than any man could bear,
the people found his sense of humour ~ still was there.
For even leavin' this world couldn't take that away
from Big Earl.
===
The last time he and I talked was shortly after Chernobyl.
And he was glad he got to live when he did.
For the world had wrought so many different changes
from the time he'd been a kid.
And he said that if the world should end right now,
at least he'd lived his life to the brim.
And that's the way I'll remember Big Earl . . .
every time I think of him.
Like a cumbersome bear walkin' out of the woods . . .
Big Earl . . .

Ma and Pop ~ why they were together
for 46 years, and their love kept getting better.
No, they never stopped what began long ago.
Just one look at them and anyone would know
that they were what's meant by being husband and wife,
for they gave to each other every day of their life.
And I loved them both, and I was so glad to be
a part of their family.
Ma was so humble. She was loving and kind.
And Pop was full of wisdom ~ the best you could find!
Ma was so patient ~ so eager to please.
And Pop was full of mischief ~ for he LOVED to tease!
While Ma was in the kitchen baking cookies and bread,
Pop had new inventions worked out in his head. . .
And they're what I always thought parents should be,
so they really were quite special to me.
Rascal was their child who kept their love young.
He was a cat with nine lives, and Ma, she blessed every one.
For every night before she'd go off to bed,
she'd pat him nine times, and plant a kiss on his head.
They didn't have much money ~ just a whole lot of love.
And after all, isn't that what a family's made of?
And I loved them all, and I was so glad to be
a part of their family.
Ma and Pop ~ why they were together
for 46 years, and their love kept getting better.
No, they never stopped what began long ago.
Just one look at them and anyone would know ~
You could gather the riches from everywhere,
but it still wouldn't equal all the love that they shared!
And I loved them both, and I was so glad to be
a part of their family.

Here once sat a man and his wife, who looked across the way to the mountains and the grasslands.
They came to live a simple life ~ one that those who love the earth can understand.
Their home was crafted here by hand, but it was from their hearts that gave this house its soul.
And at the dawning and the setting of each day, they found their center ~ looking out this picture window.
A picture perfect view was framed by one inspired by this land
to call to mind each day the oneness of all life.
For it's the earth that had sustained him and provided him this home
that he was blessed to share for years beside his wife.
And now this home and land is yours. You are its guardian ~ with Spirit in control.
And It will gather to this place the ones It needs to co-create its visioned goal.
And now it's you and I who sit beside this picture perfect window
exchanging insights that this journey here has wrought.
And we will gather here with those that Spirit brings to work together,
and each will benefit from every lesson sought.
This home was crafted here by hand, but it is reverence for life that gives it soul.
And at the dawning and the setting of each day, you'll find your center ~ looking out this picture window.
And so it's you alone who sits beside this picture perfect window
reflecting back upon the journey you've been on.
And though the bigger plan for what will be is hidden from your view,
you know without a doubt you're here where you belong.
This sacred ground you stand upon is your heart's home!

I was angry and hurt ~ lamenting the faults of the English language.
Especially when it came to that four letter word known as 'Love'.
There've been so many times when I've heard someone tell me they love me.
And now it was a word that I felt I had no understanding of.
And she said,
"Love is the universal joy that we find in one another.
And in its purest form, a joy we share ~ unconditionally.
But the humans that we are, we seem to always have to frame and define it
in ways that are limiting,
and not at all how love was meant to be."
The moment that I heard her words, I knew what she had said to me was true.
And now I could appreciate the purity behind the words . . . "I love you".
From now on when I hear those words, or say them to another, they will be
accepted or given with that purity ~ Unconditionally!
For love is the universal joy we find in one another.
And in its purest form, a joy we share ~ unconditionally.
And love is the tender care we freely give each other.
And it's the reason life was given you and me.
Yes, love's the reason life was given ~
you and me!

I just turned 50, yes, time's moving on!
But I'm young enough to know ~ the thrill isn't gone.
For I feel aliveness more than I felt before ~
I've done what I can ~ but I want to do more
to help all my brothers and sisters to know ~
Diversity in life is what helps . . . us to grow.
Life lived with quality and freedom to be ~
as genuine a being as we're yearning to be,
is what life is calling for each one of us to do.
For in the end, what will survive, is only what is true.
I want my children unafraid to share their hearts ~
knowing that acceptance of themselves . . . is where they start.
Come celebrate with me my 50th year!
Let's do what we can to dissipate any fears ~
that allowing us the freedom to love who we choose,
is a legacy to cherish ~ one where ~ no one will lose.
To be living examples of compassion and care,
is what we each can do to build a world . . . we all can share.
I just turned 50 ~ yes, time's moving on.
But I'm young enough to know ~ the thrill isn't gone!
For I feel aliveness more than I felt before.
I've done what I can ~ but I want to do more
to help all my brothers and sisters to know ~

He hadn't known her very long,
but what he felt for her was, oh, so strong.
And so he took a chance, and what he said
were the feelings he'd held in his heart,
and words he'd only spoken . . . in his head.
"Do you think that I could hold you for awhile next to me?
We don't have to do anything but just lie here, and just be.
You see it's been such a long time since I have felt this way.
I haven't felt what I feel for you for some time . . . until today."
She seemed a little hesitant, but she smiled, and nodded, "Yes".
He drew her close beside him as she leaned against his chest.
It took a little while for her to realize that he
was happy just to hold her in this moment, and just 'be'.
Be the kind of lover who could hold her and be near
to make her feel secure again so she could let go of her fear ~
that he was just another who would go against his word.
But in this gentle quiet moment, in his arms, his love she heard.
And his love said,
"I'll be here for you when you need me ~
Feel this truth in your heart.
I'll let you go when you need to be free. . .
True Love still grows, when two souls are apart."
Days and months soon passed since that moment he first held her to him.
And over time she could feel her love ~ growing for him within.
And though the miles between them may keep him from holding her near,
every time she calls him, in her voice her love he can hear,
and her love says,
"I'll be here for you when you need me ~
Feel this truth in your heart.
I'll let you go when you need to be free ~
True love still grows when two souls are apart.
Two souls who love, are never really apart!"

She's been waiting 50 years for this moment to arrive ~
as she climbs behind the wheel, turns the key and shifts to "DRIVE".
No more hauling all her groceries from the subways or the bus.
No more waiting on a ride from any lowly likes of us!
Say 'Good-bye' Jim and Kim ~ she has no need now for a man,
for she's started a new love affair with her Chrysler mini-van!
You can call her on the phone ~ just try and catch her if you can!
But I bet she's cruising blissfully in her Chrysler mini-van!
She can now be gone for days ~ even weeks if she would like.
Pack some clothes and fill a cooler ~ even take along a bike!
She can camp out in the woods, and from the comfort of her van,
watch the critters from her windows as they scurry 'cross the land.
She can travel 'round the country ~ come and go just as she please
as her hair sails out the window ~ while she's taking in the breeze.
It's a feeling like no other as she steers behind the wheel
of her own bought and paid for title-free automobile!
It's a freedom she has longed for, and now freedom's in her hands
as she smiles and waves contentedly from her Chrysler Town and Country Mini Van.
Say 'Good-bye', Jim and Kim ~ She has no need now for a man,
for she's in a torrid love affair with her Chrysler mini van.
Say 'Good-bye'. Wave 'Good-bye' if you can,
as she smiles and drives right past you
in her Chrysler Town and Country Mini Van!

I've put up 4 songs from my cd "Unconditional Love" and will periodically put new songs I'm working on to the site. Being just a one man band, I'm hoping I can connect with some Baby Boomer musicians in the Boulder/Denver area to help me color up my next cd which will showcase some of my storytelling songs I've written over the last decade. I'll be posting lyrics for new ones I'm working on that I haven't gotten around to recording yet, so check back here every once in awhile to see what's cooking in my brain and from my heart.
Namaste,
~Kim
