Current mood:  hopeful
as an artist i am constatnly trying to re-invent myself (in the spare time i have)  trying out new stuff.

when i am coloring new projects i try to do stuff differently.
if you look at SNAKED and TANK GIRL: Visions of Booga - totally new style. if you look at TANK GIRL: Vision of Booga and the upcoming TANK GIRL:SKIDMARKS tthen you will see its also quite different, away from the heavy shading to a more gradient/ soft shading.
i think the next TANK GIRL will be different either.

while waiting for Rufus to start the new series i worked on the Dead United Booklet and now i am currently working on a project on my own.

It's called "Tales of Dead Earth" and is a trashy widescreen formated, vintage look,  retro sci-fi apocalyptic story of strange stuff that comes to my mind.
it won't feature epic scale stories with deeper meanings  or intelectual ideas.
it will be like an 2 minute grindcore song,a fast punch in the face, watching an nippon movie, not understanding the words but overwhelmed by the action. thats what i want it to be.
(i used kanji for the soundeffects and words in chapter one for instance)

what i love most about the new project is the inking! if anyone would have told be one year ago that i would like inking then i would have burst in laughter. i always hated it. working with a quill, not nailing the pencils, making too thick lines.
artist dave johnson wrote in his blog about the pentel brush pen and how he loved working with it. i got myself one of these precious lil gems.
and now i love working with it. the great rough lines when you pull it fast over the paper. incredible. but since i am not sooo secure with inking i went for inking over bluelined copies of my artwork.
i also tried to experiment more with negative space / larger black areas.
i was also trying to integrate the text more into the story /artwork.
knowning that  it won't meet the level of a mike mignola or will eisner. lol

well, enough babbling....

here's some artwork from my new pet project....

the linework only page

wiht colors, texture and fx

panel from chapter 1

title page or whatever (cause its too bad for a cover)

and another character

thanx for reading,
have a great week!

When the Snaked miniseries (published by IDW) was collected in a trade paperback, writer Clifford Meth asked me if i also would like to color some illustrations Dave "X-men" Cockrum did for Cliffs short story "Snakes" which the miniseries was based on.
of course i gladly accepted the gig and felt very honored to color the awesome iconic art of a legend.

this was over an year ago and i noticed that i never put those gems online.

time to change that

a Dave X-men Cockrum illustration for Clifford Meths short story Snakes. i colored these for the  SNAKED TPB for IDWa Dave X-men Cockrum illustration for Clifford Meths short story Snakes. i colored these for the  SNAKED TPB for IDWa Dave X-men Cockrum illustration for Clifford Meths short story Snakes. i colored these for the  SNAKED TPB for IDWa Dave X-men Cockrum illustration for Clifford Meths short story Snakes. i colored these for the  SNAKED TPB for IDW

if you haven't SNAKED in your precious comic collection: there 's still time to get it in your local comic shop!
(or for those lazy sloths there is still amazon)

have a great week

tobias, bassplayer of the local horrorpunkband Dead United approached me some time ago if i wanted to do the artwork for the upcoming album. i was working on Tank Girl:Skidmarks at that time and turned the offer down at first.
after finishing the coloring of skidmarks we talked again and they hadn't found an artist yet and i gladly accepted the comission.

i went for a mix of old horror comics like EC and a Necronomicon approach.
here is some unfinished artwork.

the cover illustration, the final cover will be colored and have some vintage horrorcomicbooklook

dead united logo reloaded:

and some interior artwork, guitardemon Charles D. Vote

check out these guys:
www.myspace.com/deadunited
they also got some unmastered stuff from the upcoming album on their page.
if you ever get the chance to see them live, go for it.
they put a lot of effort in their shows, spilling fake blood and building their own custom chainsaws und other props.

have a great weekend!

c.

edit:

here is also a quick cover sketch that thery rejected.
yeah, it lacks the impact a cover should have. i still like it a bit. lol

some artwork from an 8 page short story i just finished.

went for a looser approach and tried to keep the brushstrokes quite loose. this is also the first time i transformed the finished rough pencil artwork to a light non-print blue and inked it afterwards.
(in the popupwindow where you can change the colortone/saturation click the colorize option and change the settings to color 200 and saturation+brightness to 75)
i then work with the inks straight on the printed out paper not having to worry about mistakes. the light blue won't show up after scanning.
works a bit better then my ikea lightbox table. LOL

for the lettering i used just kanji. i checked some online dictionary and used what i thought would be right. it probably is read like some badly translated manual which is exactly what i wanted it to be.
i loved watching foreign cartoonshows as a kid even so i couldn't understand what the fuck they were talking about. it had something very special.

even now i hate to watch samurai/kung fu flicks in german or english . they just work in their original language with subtitles.
tried to use that feeling for my comic

Tales of Dead Earth is the equivalent of a short, fast grindcore song about a female flash gordon in an post apocalyptic world. its fast and brutal as hell, you can't make out the lyrics.

tools: pencil, pentel gfkp brush pen, digital colors in PS, wacom

getting my new tattoo finished later. :)

"Born i am a natural genie,
as monkey i lived in mountain grove,
my house a cave behind a waterfall,
asking all how best to find the life eternal,
i praticed many arts to be immortal,
i learnt all magic without limit.
and hating the one span of human life,
i fixed my heart on joining gods divine,
the halls of heaven were not full at first,
from age to age the saints of earth ascend.
if they succeded, why not also i?
a hero who wins the race."

from Wu Cheng'en's  Journey to the West, the monkey king's amazing adventures, china's most famous traditional novel.
just reading that book, so much in love with it.....

i didn't do any blogging since january so i think it's update time....

i have been colouring rufus greyscales for tank girl:skidmarks for the last few months (i started november i think).
rufus is currently finishing the last pages and i am helping him out a bit with doing the greyscales (for the megazine) which i will colour in a few days for the collection published by titan soon. (4 issues with 27 pages, ultimately collected somewhen in a paperback if i remember right).

yesterday i was in my tattooshop of choice to my long awaited date to talk bout my new tattoo. i had some stuff i wanted on my lower left sleeve (a skeletal snake, an anchor, a robot and some cool japanese waves)and he sketched the stuff on my arm with some markers put some foil over it and put the design on paper to draw the final image which will get on my arm in two weeks. so much looking forward to that. sascha is such an great tattoo artist and he has a cool unique style.
in the case you want to check him out, here's a link to his homepage
