The Senate Bill Has Landed

Dear Kurt,

Progress toward real health care reform took another huge step this week when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid released the Senate’s health care reform bill. Now it’s time for debate on the bill, but shockingly enough, some senators don’t even want to debate the bill on the floor, much less pass it.
We expect the Senate to vote this Saturday night on whether to allow debate on the health care reform bill. No matter how your senators feel about the bill itself, tell them they must vote to allow the debate to begin.
Tell Senators: Stop obstructing reform and vote this Saturday to let the Senate debate begin for real health care reform.
We are further along in the process for real health care reform than we have ever been. The House has already passed a historic bill that will end insurance company abuses, require employers to pay a fair share and establish a strong public option to lower costs and make insurance companies compete. And it won’t tax the benefits of hard-working middle class families.
The Senate bill put forward by Sen. Reid moves us closer to the historic goal of real health care reform in America, but it's not perfect and some of it needs to be fixed. To keep the reform process moving and to fix the bill, it's critical that the Senate start to publicly debate its health care reform bill.
Sign our petition to the Senate today.
The Senate needs to proceed with the debate now. The petition also reminds senators that as they debate their bill, the House got it right by passing a reform bill that works for America’s working families and does NOT tax our health care plans.
The health care reform debate must continue. Sign our petition today.
In solidarity,
Marc Laitin
AFL-CIO Online Mobilization Coordinator
P.S. We can’t let a minority of senators stop the debate for real health care reform. Sign our petition today.

There are times when we collectively, and we as individuals have the opportunity to make a difference! In these challenging economic times, The Travis Davis Fund is a really opportunity to make a difference and assist a family in truly difficult times. Recently, a dear friend, Lindsey Alena asked me to help make others aware of what is happening with the Davis family. My only request as you read on, is that if you can help -- do!!! Even if it is to make others aware, so that together we will make a difference. It is my sincere hope that our collective efforts WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE FOR THIS FAMILY!!!!

Thank you

Hey guys,

Can you please pass this on the workout group people (not sure if you both still have the same lists or if you've got a few different ones too). Also, Kurt, I know you're Mr. Networker if you could pass this on to all your contacts that would be great!

Thanks!

Lindsey

The Travis Davis Fund

I was only going to send this to my VO & On-Camera Actor email lists,  but I'm throwing a wider net because this came on very suddenly, and the   need is immediate.  I know we are all hit up for a lot of things, but
please read, and please do what you can.  Even $5 or $10 from just half  my email pals would make SUCH a difference.

Travis Davis has been part of our VO and On-camera community since the  early 90's - he's a really nice, hard working family guy with a wife and  2 young kids.  He thought his stomach cancer last year had been beaten,   and went right back to work to support his family. All seemed OK until a  month ago, when the pain in his abdomen confirmed the cancer was back  with a vengeance.  It has spread throughout his peritoneum and
intestines.  It is terminal.  And soon.

Just two weeks ago, after tests confirmed treatment would not change the  outcome, he and his wife went through the painful ordeal of telling  their children the situation. It was as heart wrenching as expected, and
something that we can only pray we never experience.  They are strong,  beautiful kids, and are doing their best to assimilate this info into  their world, but they're just kids, and going through enough without
also worrying about whether there will be enough money to buy school  supplies in a couple months.

Travis isn't an on-camera Celebrity, or some big Movie Trailer guy with healthy reserves. He is a working-class actor who is - literally - at  the end of his rope and needs a hand.  He is long past being able to  work, and doesn't have more than a few weeks left. The little bit of  life insurance he may get from AFTRA & SAG won't help until weeks or  months after he is gone, and his wife and kids need something to see  them through this terrible transition.

I have sent them something to help a bit, and if you can also, please  do.  I am sure anything will be greatly appreciated.

Some friends set up a fund through a charity organized to do exactly   this sort of thing, the Talbert Family Foundation, and it's 100% tax  deductible:

http://www.....talbertfamilyfoundation.org/....pages/TravisDavis.html

I checked it our before I donated, and it all seems legit, and I am  assured everything donated goes directly to Travis' family.

Please do what you can, and pass this on to anyone else who might be  able to help.

 Thank you.

- Tom Kane

The Travis Davis Fund

On July 11, 2008, I was hit by one  of life's curve balls; I was
diagnosed with stomach  cancer.  Unquestionably, this last  year of
chemo/radiation and surgery have radically changed our lives and taken          a toll on my wife, our handsome 8 year old boy, Race, and
our beautiful 6 year old girl, Haven. During this time we have been
blessed to have each other, a home full of love and a relatively
stable income, both from sporadic voice over work I have been able to          do on my better days and from the outside help of others.

After months of treatment, we recently received the news we feared.
My cancer has returned, and it is terminal.

Of course, my biggest concern is for my family.  Your contribution
will help them stay afloat during and after the final days of my life.

They certainly have felt the support from all of you as have I,
and know your continued love and prayers will be a great help to them
now and in the future.  For that I am grateful,  Travis

[2] Important Information about The Commercials Contract

Did you know?

You may have noticed the rapidly changing pace of the industry and of technology itself. It seems like every week a commercial breakdown comes out with new terminology in it that makes you question which Screen Actors Guild contract the job falls under. In an effort to clarify some commonly used terms and how they apply to the Commercials Contract, we have chosen two areas of discussion that we, the SAG staff, get questions on every day. We hope you find them useful.

#1 WEBISODES and WEB CONTENT

The term “webisode” is used to describe content that is made for and airs specifically on the Internet. For the framework of this discussion, the terms “webisode” and “web content” will be applied specifically to commercials and ad-related content. A webisode is a one-off commercial for an advertiser or a web series created for a long term campaign. A webisode or web content for an advertiser may or may not feature a product. Ad campaigns with overtly entertainment-based content and no typical commercial message are known as “branded entertainment” or “branded content.” With branded content, an advertiser attempts to link its product or service with a wider audience by adding another creative layer to its brand marketing strategy. Sometimes the advertiser will create a microsite–a webpage separate from the advertiser’s homepage that may have a different domain name – on which to air the webisode(s), so at first there may appear to be no direct link to the advertiser. Branded content/entertainment is financed by the advertiser. Under the Commercials Contract, a webisode can be anywhere from 15 seconds to 3 minutes in length. Any web content of significant length is evaluated by SAG staff to determine whether it falls under the Commercials Contract or the Industrial & Educational Contract. SAG has had jurisdiction over Internet commercials since 2000.

#2 MOBISODES and NEW MEDIA CONTENT

The term “mobisode” was originally coined to define television episodes that were reformatted for mobile devices/cell phones and for episodic content created specifically for mobile devices/cell phones. This term has expanded to include commercials and/or branded entertainment shown on mobile devices. Under the Commercials Contract, new media is defined as “digital, electronic, or any other type of delivery platform including, but not limited to, commercials delivered to mobile phones and other digital and electronic media. The term new media is intended to be all inclusive of digital, electronic or any other type of delivery platform, whether now known or unknown.” Please be aware that for commercials, the term new media does not apply to commercials on the Internet. A commercial that is available for viewing by using the web browser on a BlackBerry would be considered Internet use. A commercial that pops up on a cell phone via a digital network available only from a particular wireless provider (i.e., Verizon) would be considered new media use. SAG has had jurisdiction over new media commercials since 2006.

With the arrival of the 2009 holiday season
Dreamcatchers for Abused  Children and Amber Child Safety
are teaming up to help make the holiday season a  happy one for children in need, with their first annual "Tis the Season"  Drive.

This year, with your help, the team hopes to give away thousands of  gifts to needy children and bring smiles
to the faces of those  children.

The two groups are asking the public to donate unwrapped toys for children  ages 0-18 years that will be distributed to numerous children, families and abuse shelters throughout  the United States.  A single gift will make a tremendous difference to the  life of an abused child.   Drop off locations will be set up  throughout the holiday season.  Arrangements can be made for pick up as  well.

In addition, the two groups will be hosting Christmas parties across  the United States
for these children and Santa will be visiting to pass out the  gifts.

“This is a partnership that we’re very excited about.
Dreamcatchers is an organization that has been helping abused children for  some time now and we are honored to be working along side them reminding people that  it " tis the season.” said Tad Camp, CEO, Amber Child  Safety, LLC.
