where do I begin. I wish I had a stronger work ethic, was a little more gregarious, more motivated, more creative, more talented in general.

I've gotten a couple of requests for updates, so here is a quick review and update on the neurology front (cut and pasted from an earlier blog :) ). It all started at the end of last May. First it was sinus pressure. My face was numb, my eyes ached, I felt dizzy and disoriented. I thought I had a sinus infection, but the doctor said that everything seemed normal. Then it got worse. The pain encompassed my entire head, and ran down my neck. I have never had a headache in my life. I felt nauseous, confused, and in debilitating pain every minute of every hour. The pain lessened a bit after about two months, but never went away. I have been trying to continue living my life as usual, but honestly everything I've been doing for the past year has been pretty half-assed. I was diagnosed with migraines, but I know that this isn't a migraine. Migraines don't last 24 hours a day for a full year. There is something putting pressure on the nerves that run to my eyes and face. Either way, no one has ever given me anything to make the pain go away. Finally a little over a week ago, the doctor decided to give me prednisone to bring down any swelling I might have in my head. It seemed to help a little, but didn't get rid of all the pressure on my eyes. Then on Thursday, my face began to swell. I called the hospital on Friday, and spoke with a nurse who said that I needed to speak with my doctor, and that she would have him call me. He never called. By Saturday my head had swelled freakishly, and my throat was beginning to tighten up. I went to the ER and waited 10 fucking hours in horrible pain before finally speaking with a doctor. She gave me something for the pain but didn't know what to tell me concerning the prednisone, and my swelling face. She told me that it's very important that I speak with my doctor. No kidding. Fucking awesome. I got the pleasure of walking home from the hospital in what seemed like 10 degree weather after sitting in the ER for 12 hours. Finally got through to the doctor this morning, and got myself a spinal tap this afternoon. WOW...that was seriously unpleasant. Probably not the worst procedure I've ever had, but I don't think I'll ever volunteer to do it again. Fluid pressure normal. They took a whole bunch of it to send to the lab. Now my headache is worse, and I've got some brutal back pain. He gave me some new drugs. Hopefully they'll be kicking in soon.

Ok, so I've been a bit negative lately, and since I went on a tirade about mean doctors the other day, I'll talk about nice doctors today. My regular doctor, Bonnie Bayne, at UofM Health Services, is awesome. If you want a good primary care physician in Ann Arbor, she's the best. In the past I've found that if you don't have something obvious, like a broken limb or a bacterial infection, doctors tend to give up without trying to figure stuff out. They get frustrated because they don't know what's wrong with you, and they don't know how to help. Instead of admitting that they can't fix it, they come up with excuses like, "well, I don't think there's anything wrong with you, take some ibuprofen and you'll be fine". If you're persistent, they question your sanity. I had a doctor tell me once that I needed a psychiatrist, not a medical doctor. There's nothing worse than being sick and being told that you're crazy, and that noone is going to help you. In that case, after three attempts, I finally found a doctor who was able to diagnose what was a very real medical condition. But I digress. Dr. Bayne is not one of those doctors who gives up. She knows that I'm not an idiot, and she listens to what I have to say. We discuss different possibilities, and try different treatments in order to narrow down the possibilities. Even when a treatment doesn't work, she always makes me feel like eventually we'll get to the bottom of this issue, and I'll get better. So here's to Dr. Bayne...she rocks.

Ok, so I had to go to the bathroom. What do you expect. I've been waiting well past my appointed time. I told the nurse I was going. Then I was held up at the bathroom by a woman who had managed to wedge her wheel chair in the doorway. I helped her out, went back to my room, and discovered a very unpleasant, and annoyed doctor waiting for me. I'm so sorry you had to wait a couple minutes to see me. Maybe if you had stopped by an hour ago I would have been here! The visit went downhill from there. The doctor was insulting, humiliating, and clearly not interested in seeing me. Her name is Melissa Pynnonen by the way. Assistant professor and doctor at the UofM medical center. I would have punched her in the face if I'd the energy. I have fluid built up around my eyes so that my upper lids are drooping down in a very odd manner. She refused to even look at them. I have a sore throat, and even I can see the redness on the right side. She looked at my throat and told me that there's nothing wrong. She refused to listen to what I had to say, and told me that I just have a headache and there's nothing she can do. She told me that there's no way that this was caused by an allergy, and I must be under stress. When I explained that I have one of the least stressful lives of anyone I've ever met, she just said, "that's nice." She became irritated with my persistance at trying to talk to her, and said "what's the problem? What are you concerned about anyways, the underlying cause of the headache?" Well, yes, actually, wouldn't you be concerned? I told her that I need to know what's going on. I've been missing work. Is this ever going to go away? Do I need to quit my job and go on disability? I was nearly in tears, and she was totally disinterested. She said that if I'm in so much pain that I can't go to work, than my doctor needs to consider that I might have a migraine. A migraine that lasts for over a month!? If she had talked to me for any amount of time, or even looked at the six page questionaire I had to fill out, then she would have known that I don't have the symptoms of a migraine. I got the impression that she thinks I'm crazy. I'm not crazy. There is something physically wrong with me!!!! I have internal tissue swelling, and it's not just in my sinuses. The pain can be controlled (that's the least of my concerns), but the nausea, the disorientation, the sinus pressure that affects my eyes and makes my entire face numb, is making it impossible for me to function in any kind of normal capacity. What the fuck is wrong with these people. Why can't anyone help me!

She did say that I should see a neurologist, but that I probably wouldn't be able to get into see one (I did get an appointment....in December), and she told me there is a good neurology clinic in Saline, but that it was going to cost me hundreds of dollars, and my insurance wouldn't cover most of it. Thanks. I've never played the lottery before. Guess it's time to start.
