Allen Shellenberger's memorial was last week, and during it, a 2 hour video was played that was narrated by Allen that covered his entire career. It was pieced together with interview clips Allen had done from 2000 - 2004, along with various footage dating back to 1989!

We thought we would share this with our fans from around the world and for everybody who was unable to attend Allen's memorial. So starting Monday, September 21st, and every Monday after until December 7th, we will be posting 10 minute episodes, or should we say "Al-isodes", on our YouTube page, at http://www.youtube.com/LitTV.  We put them up in segments until the entire thing is online.

Thank you for all your love and support during this time and we hope you join us in celebrating Allen.

Since Allen's diagnosis in mid-2008, I haven't really said much about it. I don't know why I'm writing now. I guess because someone emailed me asking if Lit was going to be playing it's scheduled show on Oct 2nd in North Carolina. The answer is yes, we will be playing.

When I read the email it took me back a year and four months ago when Lit was to be playing in Europe and England. Allen had just gone into the hospital. We were a week away from leaving. At this point no one knew how critical Allen was. Right there in St. Jude in Fullerton, the four members of Lit, in Allen's hospital room, we were trying to figure out if we were gonna do the shows and if so, who'd fill in for Al? Allen insisted we go. And for a moment, we thought we were. That is, until, A.Jay, Jeremy and myself talked and decided to cancel the whole tour. A week later we were in L.A. being told that Allen had a stage 4 Glioma and wouldn't make it. We didn't even know what that was. Why would we? We never knew anyone that had gone through anything like this before. Only 10,000 Americans get it a year. Allen was one of those 10,000. What could be done? Who's the best doctor? Can Allen fly? Will he make it? The questions went on for a year and 3 months. Allen asked his mom, Connie, not to tell him what his prognosis was. So she didn't and neither did we. All the way to his last day we talked as if he was going to be around forever. We talked tours, new albums, new gyms (he owns a gym in AZ) movie ideas etc.... Stuff you talk about with your friends you're to grow old with. Sadly, we all knew what the outcome was gonna be. Well, the first few months were filled with hope. Which then turned to try and spend as much time with Allen as possible and really try and soak in his laughter and smile and everything about him. (this is hard to write) Allen went on his first vacation with his daughter to San Francisco earlier this year in a quest to collect photos and memories. Coincidentally enough, I was just getting into photography and shot the hell out of Allen. Luckily, Allen loves me and supported my hobby. I even did a photo shoot with him and his daughter in Seal Beach, CA., as the sun was setting. My favorite photos I've taken thus far.

Allen never once complained while he was sick. In a way, you can say he was lucky. What I mean by that is he didn't feel much pain. Along the way people had told us horror stories of other people going through cancer and the pain they experienced. Some how Allen gave us nothing but his laughter and huge smile during his ordeal. Not much pain. At least none he told us about. He was very brave. He had to see and feel the changes both physical and mentally. Yet, no complaining. For as long as he could, he enjoyed his family, friends and just living everyday to it's fullest. Even small things like listening to Uncle Joe on SoCals own classic rock station KLOS.  I know I'm rambling. I just felt like sharing a little with the people that loved him and supported him but, maybe didn't even really know him. You probably had 1 or all 4 of his albums. Probably saw him perform. Maybe you were lucky enough to have met him. Shared a beer. A laugh. Allen was a no smoke and mirrors kinda guy. What you saw is what you got. He had no enemies. Loved a good time. Loved to laugh even more. He was my best audience. I couldn't tell a bad joke in front of him. And I suck at telling jokes.

I miss him like crazy. I was lucky enough to call him my best friend. If I was going to have a best man at my wedding, it would be Allen. I can't believe he's gone.......well, physically he is. He'll live in my heart, mind and on my shoulder forever. I can still hear his voice. His laugh. I still have voice messages from him on my phone. I'm fortunate enough to have been given some of his clothes and shoes. We wear the same size. Ha! Towards the end when Allen was bed ridden and I'd go by to visit and listen to KLOS with him, I'd always ask Allen if I could have a squirt of his cologne before I'd leave. Of course he'd say yes. Sometimes I'd ask if he'd want a squirt. He'd say yes and wave his hand slowly over himself as to show me how he'd want me to spray it on him. It was pretty rad. His mom gave me that bottle of cologne. Now on special occasions, I spray it on me. I will on Nov. 5, when I get married.

I've lost people before. Too many to mention. But, losing Allen, not to lessen anybody else, has really hit to close to home. He's one of us. Same guys with the same stories. He was the healthiest of us. Worked out like crazy. Doesn't make sense. World ain't fare. But, I know first hand Allen had a great life. We, Lit, lived it every step of the way with him. Saw most of the same stuff. Funny, Al got to sit and watch most of it. Ha!! Get it? He's a drummer. He sits.

I could go on for days like this. It's easy to talk about how rad Allen is. Was. :(  I guess I said my piece. If you have a story about Allen, please tell me when you see me on the road. I'd love to hear it. I also want to thank everyone for writing in and showing love to Allen's family, friends and band. It meant everything to us. Most people don't get that kind of support. We're very fortunate to have that. And we know it. You all have been awesome.

I miss you Al Nino!
I'll never forget you brother.

Your brother,
Kevin.....Kelbert, as Al sometimes called me.

Allen's 40th Birthday was yesterday and also his memorial, so here's a new tribute video honoring him.

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Our heartfelt thanks to all of Allen's family, friends, and fans who so generously offered friendship, encouragement, and support during his life, prayers and uplifting words during his illness, and fond memories and sincere condolences during our time of greatest sorrow. Because of you, Allen's life was richer, his spirits soared higher, and his heart beat stronger while he lived his dreams - as a musician, a dad, a son, and a friend. Allen Shellenberger, drummer for Orange County rock band Lit, lost his battle with brain cancer Thursday, August 13, 2009 surrounded by his loving family, the band, and close friends. He was 39 years old.  In May 2008, Allen was diagnosed with a malignant glioma brain tumor and immediately underwent clinical trials, chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute.

Allen was a founding member of Lit over two decades ago and was able to perform with the band until last fall. In a statement from Kevin Baldes, Jeremy Popoff, and A.Jay Popoff, the band had this to say of their longtime friend Allen:

"To know Al was to know laughter. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Words cannot begin to express how much he will be missed. This was our brother and not a day will go by that we won't think about him. Right now we're trying to find the balance of mourning his loss and celebrating his life. Allen has experienced more in his 39 years than most people dream of in ten lifetimes. This is a tremendous loss for us, our fans, and also for Allen's family who took such good care of him during his battle with cancer."

Allen is survived by his daughter Giovanna Mackey, his mother Connie James, and his father Paul Shellenberger. Lit and Allen's family wish to thank everyone who supported the benefits for Allen.

Funeral services will be private for family members only. Memorial event for Allen Shellenberger is pending.

A tribute video to Allen can be seen below:

Ten years ago today (Feb 23, 2009) the guys in Lit had their lives changed forever. It's the day their "A Place in the Sun" album hit the stores and they hit the road. Prior to that album coming out the guys worked their asses off for some 10 years in the club scene in both O.C., L.A. and even San Diego. In 1995 Lit, known as Stain at the time, inked a deal with Malicious Vinyl, a metal version of rap label Delicious Vinyl. With 2 releases, an E.P., "Five Smoking Track From....." and a full length album, "Tripping The Light Fantastic" under their belt, Lit parted ways with Malicious Vinyl and wrote a batch of new tunes which included, "My Own Worst Enemy" and "Miserable" along side a few others from Place. A friend of theirs named Stacy, now Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, brought Lit to her A&R reps attention, Ron Fair, and a deal was made. In October of 1998, Lit entered NRG Studios and worked with producer Don Gilmore (Eve6, Linkin Park, Sugar Ray) to bang out Place. In Dec 1998 Lit flew to New York to master Place with George Marino (Kiss, AC/DC, Iron Maiden).

Lit moved 500,000 albums in just 6 months and by November while on tour with Garbage the guys got the news that they had sold 1,000,000 albums. To date Lit has sold 1,500,000 units of A Place in the Sun.

Thanks to everyone that pitched in to make it all possible!!! It's been a hell of a ride!!!

Happy anniversary Lit!!!

Hello Everyone-

Kevin Baldes here - bass player for Lit and best friend/roommate of Allen Shellenberger.

As most of you know, the world of Lit has been turned upside down (to say the least). Our drummer and brother, Allen Shellenberger, is putting up the best fight in the world against his stage 4 malignant brain tumor. Long story short, when something like this happens to you or someone close to you, you quickly search and reach out for answers. For Lit and Allen's family that came in the form of The Tug McGraw Foundation. Tug McGraw was the father of country music star Tim McGraw. Tug established the foundation to raise funds to enhance the quality of life for people with brain tumors. This foundation has been a huge help in getting us in touch with people who could provide the information and answers we needed to help guide Allen in the right direction to take on this very ugly disease!!

This is where Tim McGraw meets Lit. One musician helping another! Jeff McMahon, the keyboard player in Tim McGraw's band, has pledged to run the 2008 New York City Marathon on behalf of Allen!!
26.2 challenging miles will be ran by this great man. Jeremy, A.Jay, and I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down and talking with Jeff in Nashville this past week. Jeff wanted to meet Allen through us. So we sat and told him stories of both happier times and the rough ones as well. Jeff explained that he ran better when he wasn't running for himself, but doing it for a cause. Allen's story will give him wings to finish the race.

I know these are tough times, but even the smallest amount will help give back to the foundation that has given so much to our friend. If nothing else, please pass this email on to get the word out.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EBAY AUCTION ANNOUNCED TO BENEFIT ALLEN SHELLENBERGER, DRUMMER FOR PLATINUM ROCK BAND LIT

Ebay Auction to include autographed items from Pierce Brosnan, American Idol, Tim McGraw, Nickelback, Donna Summer, Keith Urban, The Offspring, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others

Auction set to launch on Ebay beginning Monday, September 29th

Allen Shellenberger, 39 year-old drummer for Orange County rock band Lit, was recently diagnosed with a grade 4 malignant brain tumor. A benefit auction sponsored by The Make A Noise Foundation through Ebay's Giving Works Program is being launched to help offset Allen's medical costs. The auction will include autographed items by various celebrities and fellow musicians including an archive-quality signed and numbered giclee of a painting by actor Pierce Brosnan, a custom tattoo session by Aces High, a guitar lesson with Grammy-award winning guitarist Steve Vai, a "Baby Taylor" guitar autographed by Tim McGraw, a "Knocked Up" movie poster signed by Judd Apatow & members of the cast, a dinner with the band Lit, an original lithograph of a painting by Donna Summer, a guitar autographed by Staind, , an amplifier autographed by members of No Doubt, Sugar Ray & Lit, Drum Heads by The Offspring, "Stadium Arcadium" CD by Red Hot Chili Peppers signed by entire band, and autographed items from James Taylor, Nickelback, Maroon 5 and many other one-of-a-kind items. For complete info on the auction please visit Lit's MySpace page: www.myspace.com/litlounge. All proceeds from the Ebay auction will benefit Allen and Cedars-Sinai's Maxine Dunitz Neurosugical Institute in Los Angeles.

In May, biopsy results identified Shellenberger's cancer as malignant glioma. According to the National Cancer Institute, malignant glioma affects approximately 10,000 Americans per year. It is the same type of cancer Senator Edward M. Kennedy is battling. Shellenberger is under the care of world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Hunt at the Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute where he is pursuing radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Despite the news, Allen is in good spirits and committed to the fight.

Lit, who has been both a brotherhood and a band for over 20 years, has enjoyed multi-platinum success and chart-topping singles including "My Own Worst Enemy," "Miserable," and others. After two decades together, the band continues to write, record and tour. "Allen's young and healthy and if anyone has a chance to beat this, it's him," says Lit guitarist Jeremy Popoff. "As sad and scared as we all are, we're standing by him and staying positive. We're going to fight this together."

Dear Friends,

Well we all are just barely coming down from the high from Saturday night. The show was such an amazing experience for all of us. The vibe in the building was like nothing I've ever experienced. The love backstage with all of the bands celebrating Allen and the smile on Al's face the entire night....... it was epic. We saw faces in the crowd from 20 years ago, and from other parts of the planet. I did not want to leave the stage, even after 90 minutes, but we kinda were out of songs. Haha. It was so insane to watch Allen and Adrian play at the same time! The power behind me from those two, and the power coming from the crowd, .....I can't describe it. Well, I could, but they might delete my profile.

I want to thank you all for the awesome support and love you've all shown. Allen is so stoked. He was crying during the "My Hero" video, and I was massaging his shoulders and yelling into his ear to kick ass, cuz he had to play Something to Someone in like 60 seconds. He is usually such a humble, mellow guy and does not like people to make a big fuss about him. But lately he has just been pumped and loves and appreciates all of you and all of the support.

We would like to thank our friends in Sugar Ray, Handsome Devil, Wank & Burnin' Groove for re-forming just to play this show, Mo Bigsly, and Good Man Down- for all coming and representing and doing it all for free. Then one by one, thanking all of us for letting them be a part of it. Truly class acts, and we are honored to have friends like that. We also couldn't have done it without The House Of Blues. They really stepped up too. A lot of money was raised for a very good cause!

Yesterday was very stressful because Allen was with his doctors all day getting an update after several weeks of treatment. Well, the news came back very encouraging. Allen is responding well to the treatment, and his doctors are very pleased. He will now undergo some new treatments as well. We are all very thankful. Keep the prayers and positivity coming. I believe it makes a huge difference.

Anyway, I just really wanted to say thanks to you all. We are all truly blessed to have eachother.

Much love,

JP
